Bethesada may be making most of the money on PC!

Post » Thu Dec 08, 2011 3:26 am

Depending on real sales volume (which we'll likely never actually know) as well as license fees to Microsoft/Sony, and the exact percentage from retail stores and Steam (lots of estimates in there)

more than 50% of Bethesda;s total profit on Skyrim will likely come from the PC version!!!

https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0At9e86IO-Ap3dDJmMVNKWUpqNTlsd2hIM2ZXUDVFYVE

sources for some of the estimates:

http://software.intel.com/en-us/blogs/2010/04/19/hear-that-knocking-sound-its-pc-gaming/

I couldn't find the link to the NVidia graph showing predicted relation of PC retail to DD, but I used 3X as a conservative guess

Some caveats: license fee to Microsoft may be lower, since XBOX gets the (first month) exclusive DLC. I would assume that they had to make concessions to Bethesda to get that deal. But since numbers for license fees have been widely quoted at $5 to $9 per unit, I compromised on $7

I wouldn't say that's entirely acurate. I think Beth will make most of it's money on that overpriced CE.

There's no released number of pre-orders for digital download on PC. The numbers are skewed against PC and can't be accurately counted without releasing the digital pre-orders.

Isn't it ironic.

Well, the data provided shows a much higher profit margin. The best way to support Bethesda directly is to purchase their games from Steam, it seems.

I just want Bethesda to stop treating the PC as a poor stepchild, developing games on consoles and then porting to PC instead of optimizing for a PC.

Things like graphics and keyboard mapping and save game flexibility are strong points for PC that have been neglected by companies who develop for console then port to PC

Cool story bro.

Why are so many Skyrim related threads getting moved to CD? We have enough pointless threads here as it is.

I thought that this pattern of sales was established quite a while ago, in spite of the seemingly interminable "PC gaming is dying" rhetoric. And, yeah, comment about the massively overpriced CE noted and agreed with...

Sounds like the truth and not troll. I don't see how shuting out some of your customers gets you more money, that's news to me if true.

Or buying the collectors edition? IMO that's quite profitable for them.

It could be true, but I'm not sure how many copies of the collectors edition has been, or will be sold. Perhaps the numbers are floating around somewhere?

Floating way above our heads, unreachable.

We'll see after a week what the sales say  I'll be buying both a normal version and the CE of Skyrim. Super profit.

PC games on Steam probably tend to keep selling for a longer period of time than the console versions, since Steam can't run out of copies and pull games off the shelf, so it's never hard to find a copy.

Still wouldn't expect it to be anywhere near 50% though.
