Is Bethesda concentrating on the right things to fix in your

Post » Thu May 31, 2012 5:40 pm

Hi all,

Don't want to put anyone in the hot seat at Bethesda but i was wondering if you think they are concentrating on the right things for the game right now...

It seems that there is ton of quest bugs that need to be squashed yet, as an example Bethesda decided to introduce the kill cam thus creating itself even more problems associated with the new feature. I was wondering if you were of the opinion that Bethesda should work more on squashing the bugged quests rather than trying to put in more stuff that makes the game cooler. I for one would rather see the quests cleaned up and see new features in a new DLC...

your opinions?

No. Added useless kill cams and messed up shadows instead of fixing things.

Absolutely not. Shadows and the FPS gained with use of Skyboost should be things addressed by Beth. Not killmoves and [censored].

No, far from...
There are four things that NEEDS to be fixed. Without those fixes, my rating for this game goes from 9.5 to 7.5. Bethesda seems to be ignoring these problems though, and I think that is really really bad attitude of them. Big thumbs down, and this comes from one of your biggest fans that has followed your games and loved them since he was 10 years old
1. Mountain flicker / Z-fighting, very annoying and it's everywhere: http://www.gamesas.com/topic/1336456-mountain-flicker-z-fighting/
2. Unnaturally low and bad sound for what it seems almost all 2.1 speaker users, totally unacceptable: http://www.gamesas.com/topic/1351097-so-when-will-bethesda-fix-the-low-sound-issue/
3. 64-hz bug that causes stutter when FPS is 60 (for instance in most dungeons and when looking up at the sky) and that has been in the same game engine for over 3 games in a row: http://www.gamesas.com/topic/1358196-bug-64-hz-again-plz-bethesda-fix/
4. Really bad shadows (even on MAX settings), probably the worst shadows ever seen in game since the past few years: http://cdn.overclock.net/8/85/8526bb07_DefaultUltraShadows.png, http://bubbleguuum.free.fr/skyrim/texturefail2.jpg
5. Oh, and patch 1.5 made the sun invisible. That should be a priority to fix. http://www.gamesas.com/topic/1360588-two-new-bugs-shadow-resolution-changes-invisible-sun/page__p__20521908#entry20521908

I like that Bethesda adds new features, it's great, but they really should be focusing FIRST on fixing these MAJOR issues that the MAJORITY of users are experiencing. What the heck Bethesda, what is wrong with you?

Emphattic No.

Focusing on new "pretty features" over game quality i.e. fixing bugs is a stupid management decision and is one of the best ways to loose even the most stalwart fans.

Awesome work Beth to turn what was a solid, stable 1.4 config to a CTD ridden disaster with 1.5.

Plain and simple NO!
The one and only really important patch was the 1.4 patch where they did solve the Crashes To Desktop for a great deal. Sadly with the 1.5 patch the CTDs did return somewhat.
Somehow they indeed focus on looks and not on performance. Okay I know, that a bold statement and probably not true ;)
Still, it is what we notice when playing. Things like the shadows on grass, kill-cams and so on are great ... but it seems they think that is more important then to make a stable running game :(

I see that certain people have their pet peeves listed as their top priorities. That's fine, but it would be nice if BGS delivered on their promises and fixed regressions before anything else. In December, they pledged to address issues of balance regarding game difficulty as well as address exploits. That's the main reason I walked away from Skyrim about a month ago - it's terribly boring when your horse can kill dragons or your weapons are powerful enough to kill anything in one hit. It would also be nice if BGS made regressions (bugs introduced by updates, such as the 'Dragon Research' quest) a priority over everything else. This is how most software companies operate in the business world, and I honestly can't see a reason why it shouldn't be the norm in game development. It's common sense that you want your support of the game to make it better without making it worse.

Oh, and dogs still report crimes.

they've done alright by me! I do wish they would fix some of the "bugs."

honestly though I have had very few problems with the game. A quest related follower would not follow after i started the quest. unrelenting forced his ass across the room, problem fixed! most recently though, with the 1.5 patch i have gotten a ctd, acually 3 of them now. wheres as be for nada.

but yes I dont think kill cams shoulda been a priority! as there are many issues for people. but as a player with few troubles, I like the archery kill cams!

....ohh and i did get a bug where you cant get next to the outside of whiterun, I fast traveled inside and walked out. problem solved!

I guess it sounds bad but all I ask for is stability, vanilla tes is rather meh for me, modders make it what it is, but this is difficult with a new patch every month

I really really really wish Bethesda would fix the damn interface. I can't count the number of times I've clicked on a dialog option or a store inventory item and either had nothing happen or I get the selection above my mouse pointer.

Personally right now, i think that Bethesda introduced the kill cam feature to try to attract new sales.

"look guys, you can do this in skyrim now ", you can see that is was a move to make late adopters buy the game. But look at what is happening with mass effect 3, people did not get what they expected and the uproar is there.

I think they should have a few priority patches then go the the sales pitch with dlc's. I think they should fix the glitches caused by 1.5 and then sit down and stop trying to optimize the damn game for a bit and concentrate on cleaning up the quest that are bugged. Once most of them are squashed you can try to code new stuff in. Right now it seems that Bethesda is everyone and nowhere at the same time. It seems to me that by releasing the mod tool, they expect people to fix stuff that is broken without having to invest money into doing it.

Sorry folks but Microsoft does not let anyone fix the bugs in windows for them so why should bethesda expect gamers to fix their ------ work. I dont think people should have to mod to fix the game issues. Mod to make things different yes, but not to fix things like broken quests and other things like stuff that is not in the right place in the game's universe.

I get the blame at work for being sloppy, i can get away with it for a while but it will catch up with me and bite me in the behind. Some people can live with the bugs in the game but when i see pages upon webpages of quests that "seem" or "are" broken and things that needs to be fixed then what is the point of even trying to play the game. I have seen one thread where in one fan patch fixed a ton of things. I just dont get why Beth is not ashamed or humiliated by this! one or a few people alone are able to fix things in no time versus the company that has the code let it slide thru to QA and the gold version of the game.

I would not say a few bugs, hey it happens but when you invest in the hundreds of hours into something, you want to have the max amount out of it. I can say that i am happy that i have given money to this game which was a huge undertaking but sometimes you have to man up, fess up, take the bull by the horn and do what is right.

I think Bethesda should do that.

nuff said!

I think we need to be careful and mindful here... First of all, of course several things should have been fixed before launch. BUT, Bethesda has had many "firsts" in the history of TES (or Fallout for that matter):

1) LAA 4GB patch
2) CPU Optimization
3) HD Pack

As they've already stated, their priority is game stabilization first, and *then* bug fixes, so I'm expecting (hoping) that they'll followup over the next several months.

I personally am hoping to see some massive bug fix patches well before any talk of Skyrim DLCs.

but yes I dont think kill cams shoulda been a priority! as there are many issues for people.

Bethesda Game Studios is made up of many talented people with diverse areas of expertise. Some of them are artists and animators. Do you expect them to become developers and testers? Or would you rather they apply their strengths to add new content while the qualified test and dev teams work on fixing things efficiently? I certainly hope you don't expect them to sit idle and do nothing while the game is patched.

Have to also take into account that plenty of people are running the game fine. My buddy is running an HP crapfest with a 260 and the game is working flawless for him since release.

Interesting points... plus I want to add this: Back to @OP; I'm in agreement that I would rather see Bethesda's efforts placed towards the mountain of documented bugs, rather than add new features like kill cams. I mean this in the context of short term goals.

Quick Examples:
1) Fix the buggy behavior of casting Raise Zombie on a dead dragon. Seriously Beth...
2) So a Imperial Guard is fighting a Stormcloak in a small town. The Imperial wins, and the Stormcloak is dead. 2 seconds later, the Imperial asks me if I know anything about this, as if he just stumbled upon a crime. Holy crap-sticks are there dumb moments in this game....
