Big Mods?

Post » Mon Jun 18, 2012 8:58 pm

How long did it take until the big mods were launched for Morrowind/Oblivion?

Any new questlines/expansions for Skyrim yet?

Probably some small ones. Have patience! The big mods won't be out for weeks to months. The CK is great, but building solid, detailed, well-tested content takes time.

And there are some issues involving height mapping and level of detail that go wonky in the CK when generating large worlds. The people working on those mega-mods are trying to sort it all out. But don't worry. Big mods will start rolling out eventually.

Will we see anything like Morrowind Overhaul, or Nehrim?

Probably. Just watch the Skyrim Mods forum and keep an eye out for [WIP] threads.

it'll be a while until you see something as big as Nehrim... That came out 4 years after Oblivion.

Might be a little difficult with the glitches limiting the size of new landmasses, causing navmeshes to constantly screw up and objects larger than a certain size (about the size of a small farmhouse) dissapearing at random.

My DLC-ish sized mod will be coming out in about 6 months. Anything bigger will take FAR longer, so maybe a few smaller quest mods in a few months.

Much longer than 6 months for something bigger then a farmhouse? The CK is limited this time because of glitches? Doesn't sound good.

I don't mean it's impossible to make something bigger than a farmhouse at all. But when things you place are, there is a possibility of them dissapearing. I, for example, made a town with 7 buildings. 2 of these buildings had this issue and kept randomly dissapearing until I reloaded. Putting on a setting called "Full LOD" seems to stop the problem, but what it also does is make it so it loads at full dtail even far away, which can make your computer run very slow if too many things are using this, as it has to render everything. Thus, until this problem is solved or another workaround is found, people might have to be careful trying to create a lot of large objects. The person you read the 6 months part off said it would take much longer than 6 months to create a whole new lands mod or an expansion or something large like that, not just a large house.

What if a couple people worked day in and day out on a big expansion?

Has little to do with bugs, and everything to do with how much work it is to produce a big mod.

There are plenty doing so, but if it took Bethesda, (At the time like 70 people) like 6 months to make the Shivering Isles, how long do you think it will take 5 people to make a massive expansion?

Now, I'm making a fairly small expansion (Adds my own island about 1/5 the size of Skyrim) and I'm working alone, but I plan on finishing in like July or August hopefully. Here's my progress so far, just a heightmap and some basic LOD: http://cloud.steampowered.com/ugc/488876271486080127/9DCBF207E2D73F2A7C84A046E91C2913C81AC59A/

Happens a lot. But it still takes an enormous amount of time, and that's without even factoring in things like fluctuating interest, real-life interruptions, managing a team of modders efficiently, having a confident central vision etc.

We need something big. Just saw a screen of what looked like a tropical area someone is working on.

I'll mention 'Beyond Skyrim', a huge WIP of the entire Tamriel heightmap which is currently crippled by a bug that
will cripple lots of other large scale, ambitious, mods, like MERP (Middle Earth Role Playing) if we don't rally for a fix.

See this thread: http://www.gamesas.com/topic/1348275-gamebreaking-bug-for-worldspaces-bigger-than-4-quads-in-width/

BIG mods, you wont see for over a year or more....depending on the size of the teams working on them.

At the moemnt though you wont see any really big mods like MERP or Beyond Skyrim since the game cannot support large landmasses.

NO and NO

It could take 6 months for a real large deep story mod but a "farm house" could be done in hours, and the CK is not limited, it has a few bugs that will get patched soon enough so just ignore that side of the story . In the end though yes it will take months and months even years before we get some of the larger expansion mods and for a total conversion i would say Years for sure.

Don't take too much into the whole " big mod" thing there will be tons of large awesome mods in the first few weeks to months, also not all big mods will take over a year, so don't buy into that either it really depends on the mod team.

Back in Morrowind days i've made a Mod/quest that had around 800 exterior cells divided into 3 big landmasses, it took me 6/8 months around 4/5 hours a day, 7 days a week, working solo. There were similar projects for Morrowind that took more than 1 to 2 years in production - this with groups of dedicated and highly skilled modders (ie wizard island/silgrad and others). I mention Morrowind because Skyrim is very similar when it comes to production work ( all must be hand made).
Oblivion was a bit more easier to mod with easy to do landmasses, and tools, the region generators a must, we did see plenty of quality mods that took in average at least 1 year until a beta was made public. For Skyrim and unless things change drastically I don't foresee many BIg mods, the world doesn't have that many resources and the CK has severe limitations so far.
Want a solid piece of advise? PLAY Morrowind with the overhaul graphics and TR and then try out Oblivion with all the landmasses and soon you will say...SkyWhat?

Yea i wouldn't go that far buddy. The main thing i keep thinking every second of playing through oblivion again a few weeks ago fully modded up to date was " man i can't wait till ( insert mod here) is ported to Skyrim.

I wish I could work day in and day out! But I'm in the middle of midterms. I'm planning a relatively smaller quest-based mod but it will definitely expand over time. So far since the CK has been out my available time has been put towards making the worldspace and the introduction quest. It's bugged at the end and I cannot figure out why. All the new little bugs and stuff in the CK definitely slows down some.

A lot of stuff has been fixed since the previous kits but some new errors are introduced that you need to overcome.

Gonna be quite interesting. You think we'll ever see a Overhaul mod on the level of Morrowind's?

MERP is going to be pretty bleedin' big. I'm hoping it will be Skyrim's Nehrim.
