Biggest Gaming Disappointments of 2011

Post » Wed Sep 07, 2011 2:24 am

I have only purchased one game so far and I wound up giving it away, that was Amnesia: The Dark Decent. It wasn't necessarily a bad game, it just wasn't for me, it didn't fit my playstyle. (I'm not too big on running and hiding unless I'm try to get in close for a silent kill) I wouldn't have minded so much that I wasted $20 on a game if I was looking forward to any more, which I no longer am after seeing all the DRM strings attached to any that I was hoping to get. This includes, but is not limited to Skyrim, Diablo 3, Duke Nuke Em Forever (though I think I may have actually dodged a bullet with that one) Rage and the afore mentioned New Vegas.

I was also very, very disappointed in the announcement of Wii U. I thought to myself 'and this is it or have we got to the real thing yet?' But oh no, that was it.

Microsoft was as disappointing as ever, flogging Kinect and stuff, despite Halo 4 being announced. Though I'm pretty sure the series still has a lot of potential yet, a lot of people jumped on the bandwagon and labeled it as 'francise milking'. Now I'm waiting patiently for 343 to prove to these folks that this isn't COD and that they are making a new trilogy because the story/universe is strong enough to be continued, not to print money.

Duke Nukem Forever turned out dreadfully though when it was trying to appeal to such a wide variety of play styles I can understand why it turned out the way it did.

Skyrim being infected with Steamworks and being dumbed down even further was a disapointment but once again not a really surprising one.

Ubisofts continued ignorance regarding customer relations and DRM.

The Witcher 2 was a relief though and worth every penny. Some great re-releases on gog.com also that I was glad to see. Limbo getting a release on PC was a positive also despite requiring steam.

Yes...... i know. And this is where it devolves into what TeeHee was saying about vs. Just know that Beth resurrected a dead series and did it better than anything before it. Now you may rebuttal with anything else, I am dont commenting on FO3 v NV :obliviongate:

And you yourself are doing such a smashing job preventing this from becoming an Obsidian vs Bethesda topic.

Anyway, I'd say Dragon Age 2, but I pretty much had little hope for that since the first screens came out just about a year ago.

The Witcher 2. They jumped the dumbing down bandwagon.

Haha lol yes it's not as good as 1 but still... the dumbing is very "light" compared to... other games?

Dragon Age 2 for sure, although I knew it was coming. Prior to the release, every aspect looked like it had been taken a step down.

DOTA 2's tourney was a bit disappointing with all the technical problems and lack of innovation (which is a good thing to some people, to each their own). The game isn't released yet though, so I won't judge farther.

Was CIV 5 this year? I don't even remember. That was also pretty meh compared to the 4th, although the majority of my problems with it comes from having a computer that isn't top of the line. Then again, my computer is very strong and I expected it to run the game better, considering the game isn't really anything to ogle at.

New Vegas. Please Beth, don't let anyone else do the Fallout franchise again.

Strongly disagree. Anyways, didn't New Vegas come out in 2010? :P

I've only bought Brink this year and the only thing about it that disappointed me was the horrible lag issues when it was first released, but that's all fixed now.

EDIT: The direction Bioware went with Dragon Age II was disappointing and resulted in me saving some money. :)

I differ, Bethesda just did the same thing that they re doing with Skyrim, simplify the RPG aspects, its look like that they was just to appeal the casual gamer

Anyway, The only 2011 game that Ive bought was DX:HR, and it wasnt a disspaointment, so, no, there is no dissapointment yet

Brink.

The only issue is lag. I bought the game on release day, and couldn't get into a single multiplayer match without bots. I waited until a week ago, for the latest patch, to try the game again. Again, couldn't get into a game, I tried for a good 3-4 hours. What a disappointment. Brink looks so fun, but it's unplayable due to lag, even on the latest patch. (For me anyway. I used to think that maybe it was my connection, but I don't have this issue with any other game.)

I guess maybe Dynasty Warriors 7. I love DW, but the lack of innovation just makes me want to puke. Fans have been screaming for a way to control their troops adequately for ages now, and it continues to get ignored.

New Vegas is far superior to FO3 - apart from the exploration aspect. It felt far more a fallout game than FO3, although still not fallout-y enough, it just felt like a really well done post apocalyptic game. Well unless it's isometric and turn based it can never feel like a real fallout game to me, but anyway.

I'm eager to play the old Fallouts but it's more a worry of whether my PC has the capabilities of running them smoothly (they are old games) rather than whether or not I'll enjoy them. Turn based stuff doesn't really bother me, makes you feel more immersed in the experience.

You can, but you need some special patches, for each Fallout to play in newer computers (And switch Windows Theme to classic mode)

I can play them perfectly well on my 64 bit windows 7 PC. :)

EDIT: @Dario: Not necessarily needed.

Skirim can be a dissapointment, I still have a sour taste with Oblivion and Fallout 3, hope this game becomes better, yeah I know, they scrapped repair, but hey, it could be worse right?

most of my disappointments came from not the games themselves but the distribution methods themselves, which pretty much turn me off from buying the games no matter how good they are.

I didn't buy any brand new games this year, but of the ones I did buy, I've been disappointed by...
Operation Flashpoint: Dragon Rising - Way different from the first Operation Flashpoint, which is a terrible, terrible thing. I loved it the way it was. Also the controls were really strange. Bottom line, I have Bad Company 2 and that takes the cake any day.
Deus Ex: Game of the Year Edition - I couldn't get into this game at all. It wasn't the graphics ( I installed a mod to drastically improve them ) as some people would like to think, it was the gameplay. I just didn't like it at all.
