Bow and Arrow Are Broken

Post » Sat Jun 02, 2012 12:37 pm

I have been playing for some time now and ive come to realize that the bow and arrow do not go where you point them and do not even when your aim is dead on hit what you point them at.. Makes being sneaky archer type really hard....

It's called gravity, deal with it.

I'd like to see you be accurate with a bow. It's pretty difficult.

Jokes Aside, It shoots a little higher than the reticule lets on.

Do you play 1st or 3rd person? I've noticed that sometimes when firing in 3rd person, the arrow starts flying from somewhere entirely different than where it should, thus usually hitting the ground right away. Other than that, the arrow isn't supposed to fly straight towards the crosshairs - it first goes a tad higher and then starts falling down, hitting far away targets in a lower spot than where the crosshairs is pointed. That's how it should be.

From what I see, the cross-hair is normalized to a rough average of a certain distance, given that arrows are affected by gravity they can not shoot dead straight.

Yeah, it shoots higher. Like reverse gravity sorta?

Y'know, if the physics were such that the wind direction and speed was easily identifiable, that would be pretty sick. Hard as hell, but sick. On topic, they are not hard to use in this game, as others have mentioned, point of impact (at reasonable distance) is slightly above the crosshair.

The fact that you cant even hit things from a good distance away, when you actually should be able to, is annoying. It makes ranged combat from far away, not viable.

But instead the physics is such that you can take someone's head off (usually your own), if you sneeze in the direction of a cabbage.

At short range the arrow always hits above your target. At medium range, the arrow hits the target. At long range, the arrow hits below the target.

it's kind of a lousy system, they've set it so that the arrow arcs upwards at first, so that noobs don't have to worry about accounting for gravity. Trouble is that at anything other than a sort of medium range, it becomes almost impossible to aim the bow. Also, the arrows tend to fire from somwhere around your feet I've noticed. If you're standing on a ledge you'll notice this the most, no chance of hitting any enemy lower than you as your shots will all end up hitting the ledge.

Eagle Eye and Steady hand really help with Archery. I suggest you take those perks when you can. They'll help you.

Arrows don't go straight when shot from a bow, they arc.

All I know is long range archery is non existent. I sat there and tested it for hours trying to hit things overlooking a cliff. The arrows either didnt hit, or went through the target or something, because they never caused any damage. And that's with 100 in Archery and all of the perks except for the second 'slow time' perk. Tried it with the mod that illuminates arrows, so I saw where they were actually going, and they seemed to just disappear.

I used to have difficulty with the bow like you, then I took an arrow in the knee.

...kinda felt like karma to me.

Arrows have a max range. You will need to download a mod to change this.

Define "long range." I use archery at quite a distance all the time, with no problems.

Really? Even though I don't major in archery, I do have trouble with long-range shots. I tried picking off a Mammoth across the plains once. It was stationary, but I could never seem to hit it regardless of the arrow's trajectory. I find it hard to believe that the arrow fell short, because those buggers seem to have some velocity in them.

There is a broken sword you'll find during the companions quest when you go to a certain cave. Without spoiling too much it's the cave with ghost inside. Can't use it but there's the handle and blade as two separate items.

Go to My Documents > My Games > Skyrim and open the Skyrim.ini file. Add these two lines to the bottom:

[Actor]
fVisibleNavmeshMoveDist=12288.0000

This makes your arrows hit pretty much anything you can see, if you aim properly. Without it the game doesn't register arrow hits at large ranges. You will have to aim a pretty good distance above your target to hit stuff you can barely see. Practice on mammoths.

it is a pain compensating for the anti-gravitaional force created by nirn's moons (it has to be justified some how), i like arrows behaving realisticly and going straight

After having used a real bow, I can assure you arrows do not in fact fly straight.

Yeah, their "max range" must not be very long. That's lame. Whats the name of the mods your referring to that ups the range?

Awesome, thanks. So does that save, or will I have to enter that every time I load?
