Brink to be horribly dumbed down?

Post » Sat May 28, 2011 2:58 pm

So far the gameplay videos make Brink to look like a cross between Borderlands/Bulletstorm, Call of Duty, and Team Fortress 2. But I've recently heard some horrible news about it. I heard it will NOT have headshots, a global leaderboard system, or grenades that do any real damage. So far everyone is disappointed about this and many people have said that they are canceling their pre-orders and others said they won't even bother buying the game now. Are these horrible rumors true? I haven't found an official press release from Bethesda or Splash Damage confirming/denying yet. But if it is true, I probably won't buy this game.

I heard no 1 shot kill headshots, no leaderboard system, and grenades more as crowd control than 1 grenade kills 5 people. I personally dont care, because I usually have to play online by myself b/c friends may not have the game or different schedules, so Im looking forward to having people actually work with me instead of worrying about the leaderboard scores. Or some clown running around the corner and jumpshooting me with a shotgun in the head after i hit him with 6 shots, or me having a silencer and the jerk beside me is letting lose with his loud gun and attracts a grenade that kills me too. I understand how some may not care for it but it doesnt affect how I personally look at it

No OHKs but headshots do more damage than non headshots, no leaderboards because there's no room for personal glory, grenades aren't OHKs but do damage.

These rumors are, as far as we all know, true and have been true for quite some time.

CoD is horribly dumbed down, this is just specifically focused.

I will probably be ninja'd while typing this.

This is no sudden decision. Its been this way throughout development. Like all the way through, they have stated that grenades will only knock people down, and there are no 1 hit headshots.

And to clarify your concerns: headshots do more damage, but there are no one-hit headshots. So those are in, however probably not to your liking.

I don't see how the lack of leaderboards "dumbs down" Brink; Leaderboards are the cause of "dumbing down" in games.

Grenades knock people down, setting them up for some easy shots.

And these don't dumb down the game. In my opinion, a dumbed down game is one that takes reflexes rather then skill, such as COD. In Brink, you can react and fight back an opponent, even if they have the jump on you.

Honestly all that crap wasn't the draw for me anyway. Working as a team to accomplish missions in a-la-Borderlands style is pretty nice. Other than that, shooting someone enough typically kills them. Not too worried about where the bullets end up. As far as leaderboards go, I don't really care how I place amongst my fellow nerds. Just do the mission and play nice while dying as little as possible. Pretty simple.

nades do more dmg the closer you are 2 the boom

snipers are 2 shot incapers 3 shot kills at best.

no OHK so that we don't have people running around with a R700 no scoping beating a guy with an M60 or something like that random thing.

no leaderboards for less competitiveness , it's a team based game not a "look at me i got 32698 kills haw haw haw".

The only leaderboard that I have heard of is for doing the 3rd level of a challenge and getting that time put up on a leaderboard. If people are really cancelling their pre orders because headshots dont instant kill and grenades aren't mindless spam devices for often cheap kills then who needs them anyway lol. Hopefully they stick to Cod and stay away.

Edit: Just re looked at the title. How is this dumbed down? Things are more challenging and actually requiring more thought is dumbed down? Good lord, I don't even know what to say about that.

1. One-hit kills in general have been removed. SD wants you to know exactly how you died, and they don't want it to seem like you've been smitten by nature. Of course, like other people have said, scoring headshots will deal more damage than body shots.
2. There is no leaderboard system because SD wants to promote teamwork, and doesn't want lone wolves focusing on their KDR.
3. Grenades are more crowd control weapons, capable of dealing massive damage but not outright killing people. See #1.

Honestly, if these "problems" turn people away, it's not surprising at all. BRINK is taking gaming somewhere different and it was bound to incite criticism anyways (as if the lack of women and splitscreen weren't criticism enough as is). It's not going to be a Battlefield, a COD, or a TF2 clone, and it will accomplish that by evening out the playing field for everyone.

Now that you mention it, blanketing with "everyone" and "most" is problematic unless there's proof. Not everyone hates the changes SD has made.

Dumbed down? Improved you mean.

Exactly. It takes a lot more skill to play BRINK.

LOL@ a CoD fan calling Brink "dumbed down" for improving on everything that is wrong with CoD. U jelly, OP? Will it be hard for you to participate in an online community where camping and headshots won't be enough to make all your friends respect you?

Hrm, you do have a point. BRINK's skill mainly relies on how well you work with your teammates, as opposed to running-and-gunning (though you could do that, it just doesn't benefit your team as much as resupplying/helping out your squad will)

I kind of like what they did with the grenades. If a grenade explodes eight feet away from you, it probably isn't going to kill you if you are lucky enough that the shrapnel doesn't hit an artery, but it will definitely turn your world upside down and throw you to the floor. That's the change they made to grenades. As for the snipers, I'm disappointed, but sniping probably wasn't going to be a very big part of the game anyway. Indoor snipers?

Well, if we're being realistic, they made grenades truer to real life than most games while nerfing sniper rifles, as compared to how they function in reality. Fair enough trade. I don't play video games so I can experience the total simulated reality of war. I'm just trying to have fun.
