It wouldn't bug me if I could....

I'm understanding there will be more than one house available..... Assuming you can get more than one in a single play, I wouldn't mind being able to rent one out... Come by every week or so and collect a bit of rent... Maybe use my key and help myself to the tenents Nuka-Cola machine...

Well Oblivian let you own a place in every town/city; why not a shack or something in every settlement? If just for places where you can sleep and drop off excess equipment and ammo.

You can already do this but the house or shack is not "Owned" and it's not Oblivian it's fallout. More houses to own would be good but not in every town.

I know it's not Oblivion, I was just using it as an example. So if it's not owned then what is it; leased, rented?

Just walk into any house or shack and keep you're stuff there. You can't use the housing themes or anything like that but you can just become a squatter. Put you're stuff in the lockers or containers. I don't know how long the stuff will last there but alot of people do that for FO3.

Some area's have hotels that you pay for, not sure if they kick you out after the time is up or make you pay again.

Damn, already been said. O_<

Well.... Yes and no I guess.
I don't want it like fable.
But I would be ok with something along the lines of this:
Would be awesome if I could bankrupt a casino and then buy it out of their hands and keep it active under my rule. (The casino has a hotel)
Or if I could extort some poor guy living in a shack to give me money each week.

But nothing like fable though.
And the examples I gave should be limited and very few, nothing like fable were you can buy almost anything.
By fable 3 we will probably be able to buy streets, bridges and lampposts...

If done right it could work, but it would depend on how the housing system works in New Vegas. If it's like Oblivion where there's several different homes that we can all buy, then I can see it as feasible to use those extra houses to house NPCs. But if it's like Fallout 3 where there's multiple houses (well in FO3, only two, but New Vegas is supposed to have a few more) but only one can be owned, then I don't see it as a great idea. There's only one you can own based on your path/actions, and the reward is for it to be yours.

I've never played Fable or any of the Fable games so I have no clue how it worked in that game.

Walks up to sign that says "for sale".
Press the "use" button.
Pop-up: Do you want to purchase this house for 500 gold?
Yes.
Pop-up: Do you want to live in this house or rent it out?
Rent it out.

Then the money will appear in front of that for sale sign in three days.
And that's about it.
If you kill the people living in a house a for sale sign appears in front of that as well.
I think you could upgrade houses in fable 2 or something though.

That's really lazy. If it was it's own mini-quest where you basically have to find a man and/or his family trying to find a home and be willing to rent it out for them, then I could see it feasibly working. But otherwise no.

It's one of their things.
What's lazy is that they dropped the whole combat down to one button for each weapon.
Magic and sword fighting system svcked in Fable 2 while it was interesting in Fable.

NO

but i would like to be able to drop items that light up rooms like a lamp

in fable 2 i got so rich off renting sorry but i dont think anyone in fallout would ever pay a fine to live in a house for a day...... at least not me....... if they needed a house just go find one in the waste..... we dont have to be like HGTV buying and selling homes...

Does that really add anything to the game at all?

Technically speaking it would be adding slight immersion, but the amount is extremely small.

The only real benefit out of it is to score some free extra caps, kind of like disarming the bomb in Megaton (although that nets you useless crap or occasionally a bottle of water or stimpak).

No. The protagonist is a rolling stone that collects no moss.

He could do that via extortion; and it be effectively the same thing (but in character for the series)

If you store items in random containers, they tend to dissappear. The only safe container was in your house.

I know, I am just not sure how long the items stay. FO3 forums had alot of "Where do you keep you're items?" topics. I just don't want to go back and read them all to find out.
