Can anybody explain why 70% of my items are listed as stolen

Post » Mon Jun 11, 2012 10:31 pm

So I bought the house in Solitude, then moved all of my stuff from Whiterun to my new house. Now at least 70% of everything I own is considered stolen. The only things not effected by this are any thing in the book section of my inventory or the food section. Go into any of my other inventory sections and you see almost nothing but red letters. I'm not on pc so I can't use console commands to fix it (if that's even possible for this situation), nor can I reload because i'v already saved again before I realized this had happened. Can anybody explain why this has happened to me?

And I know for a fact that I didn't steal most of these items because a lot of them are either items that have been recently awarded to me for completing a quest or they're something like my daedric artifacts.

I'm playing my game right now, and just found out that even my dragon priest mask's have been effected.

Because you stole it, obviously.

But seriously, this sounds terrible. I hope the bug you found can be repeated easily so it can be fixed :(

You maybe had a follower pick it up off the groud manually.

the items that were awarded to me are even marked as stolen. I just bought a new sword (in case i got in trouble and the guards took my favorite sword), and it was immediately marked as stolen.

I've noticed this as well. I have numerous items stored in a chest that come up "red" and which I know weren't stolen.

I haven't tried to sell one of these items yet, so don't know whether the item would be seen as "stolen" by a merchant.

I thought it might have something to do with the fact that the chest is in a house I don't actually own ... I just took over the lease after the unfortunate demise of the follower who previously lived there.

Selling and buying it back does not work.

Here's what I did to solve my problem.

I used the mannequin exploit to make a copy of it. The new copy isn't marked stolen. All you need to do is upgrade it of you did the last one.

There's a recent thread in these forums about a "fencer's barrel" in the kitchen of Dragonsreach. Use it to launder your stolen goods.

Put all the stolen items into a container then tell a follower to take all items from the container. Then simply trade with the follower the stolen flag will be gone.

No! That's HOW you mark it stolen in the first place!

"Filthy pickpocket!"

Seriously, that sounds like an awful glitch. I think trading with fences and then trading the items back should get the "stolen" mark off.
Of course, it costs either a lot of gold or a lot of Speech perks, and you have to be a member of the Thieves Guild.

In cases like this, where an unwanted effect is placed on a character that could be attributed to acts of a player, I have to ask the obvious... Do you have an annoying little brother?

did you store all your stuff in your housecarls room or maybe didnt purchase all the upgrades first? It seems odd but maybe storing in a container that isn't yours makes the items turn stolen after awhile

also the solitude home is bugged so who knows

Some believe that it does not set the flag, but that it toggles the flag and doing it a second time could reverse it.

It may be worth a try.

If these items were ever put in a container that is owned by someone else, ownership can get transferred.

I am still trying to figure out why the OP is running the game off of one save.

If you want to roleplay the problem, go looking for the bastard who paid off the guards/merchants to frame you.

I had this happen with my first character's first set of dragon bones. I didn't have a house yet so I just stuck them in a chest in Hod and Gerdur's house. When I did get my house I went back to get them and they were listed in red. I think I even said to my TV, "You said I could stay here. I thought I could store my crap here too".

I have noticed that if I rent a room in an Inn, and try to store any stuff in the room, it may flag things as stolen when I try to take them out again. This doesn't always happen. It seems to be based, first, on my faction in that city. If I am a stranger I can't store much, if I am friendly I can store more. Then it also seems to be based on the value of the stuff I am storing. For instance, when I visit Windhelm where my faction is low (I'm an Imperial and a member of that army, but I guess I must be a good spy cause they ought to arrest me on sight) I can store items under 50gold worth of stuff in my room. Anything more expensive than that gets flagged as stolen and I have to be really careful about removing it.

Please tell me there is a toggle for this that ive missed, its always annoyed me have to drop items to find whats been stolen...
