Can we get an adventure and not a puzzlefest?

Post » Thu Nov 15, 2012 11:36 pm

Seriously....this is like playing Zelda. Hit this switch to open this door or stand on this block to open this passage.

What happened to the awesome adventure?

You gonna add platform jumping anytime soon...i'm really missing it.

LOL, you should be lucky TES games basically holds your hand when adventuring, where as most RPGs in the past were mainly all strategic puzzles/mini games to enter any location.

God forbid having to find a chain to open a door.

This is literally a first.

Has anyone ever wondered why games have gotten continuously simpler over the years? Drives me crazy.

I like the puzzles. Gives me something to think about instead of running wildly through the hallways, guns blazing (so to speak). Putting a little thought into my adventures is actually something I miss from games, and wish more would include it.

I'm sorry that you don't like "puzzlefests." However, I disagree with that position. Furthermore, I would really call this a puzzle fest anyway.

Bottom line is that I turned off this game for another one.

Take it for what you will.

I actually loaded up Morrowind. Enjoy your Dawnguard. Bethesda...take it for what its worth.

Great series but quit dumbing it down.

I'm curious why you think adding some puzzles make the game dumber? I would suggest the opposite.

Puzzles...where?

The only puzzles I have ever found in skyrim, is those crypt circle doors, but even then the answer is on the key.

I welcome puzzles as the last time we really saw puzzles was in 1998 with The Elder Scrolls Adventures: Redguard.

Dumbing it down? Actually adding challenge and making you actually think is "Dumbing it down"?

Like I said...if you guys enjoy playing Zelda I guess this is the new generation. Give me an unbeatable boss at the end or a door that kills you with spikes....I don't want to play match a picture to get to the end of the dungeon.

I played Everquest at release and it was plenty tough without stupid puzzles. I guess this is what you guys are used to now though. Have fun!

Used to? RPGs have had puzzles since the dawn of time. :ermm:

I don't think they are mutually exclusive. You can have an unbeatable boss and match some pictures. ... Although I don't think you have to match any pictures in DG.

Not only that, but puzzles are not the "new" gaming at all. They are the oldest archetype, in fact. Puzzle games have been around longer than your "boss" battles. Zelda came out in the '80s, back when I was a kid.

I don't understand your frustration. I don't see how adding in an actual objective or two, apart from "run-n-kill" makes the game any worse. I prefer it.

puzzles are hardly a trait of modern games. the industry would be much better off if they were.

Atlus puts out nice dungeon crawlers chock full of damage floors and [censored] bosses all the time. Etrian Odyssey is a fun game you should totally check out.

Puzzles are a mixed bag to me.

I recall the standing on stones puzzle in Dragon Age Origins when going to see the urn. I never solved it. After trying for about an hour I just printed off a cheat and never tried again.

The flip side of that is the puzzles in Skyrim, which are so easy that it is embarrassing that they are even there. There are a couple that make you read a book, and then there is the one to get the scroll, but the stone spinning ones and key holes are really a joke.

But ... I don't want something again like DAO where I can't be solved unless you get out a pen a paper. Note the early Tomb Raider games were pretty good. Those would be more Skyrim style (not that I want to push blocks around though.

Some posts deleted. Calling other members names - in this case "troll" and posting spoilers in this forum are both against the rules. Don't do it if you want to be around to discuss the game.

TES needs more puzzles, and harder puzzles. Haven't play dawnguard yet but if there are more puzzles than vanilla Skyrim that's a great thing to me.

You haven't been doing much dungeon-diving, then. There are a variety of puzzles throughout the game, mostly in draugr or Dwemer ruins.

That being said, they're nowhere near as hard as the puzzles in the Tomb Raider series. I can always figure out Skyrim's puzzles if I think about what they're asking me to do. Some puzzles are harder than others, of course, but I've never had to cheat and look up the answer for any of Skyrim's puzzles so far, like I used to do regularly with Tomb Raider.

Puzzles make a good adventure more fun, to me. The ones in Skyrim aren't difficult but they add a bit of something. I'm surprised it feels like dumbing down to the OP.

The only thing I've taken from this thread is that OP complaining that they can't work out the puzzles, and that this strain on their mental capacity is attributed to 'dumbing down'.

It says a lot that 'dumbed down' content is evidently a strain on ones mind

Wait, wait.. What?

You're complaining that the puzzle is too hard, yet you're saying that Bethesda is dumbing it down?

Am.. Am I the only one who senses the irony in this statement?
