Can Ore Be Turned Into Ingots?

Post » Tue Jun 05, 2012 5:56 pm

Excuse me? Could anyone give me a little help/advice please?

Obvious question is, can you turn Ore into Ingots? Is there a work station in the game with this capability?
I've used a forge and a work bench which upgrades armour an weapons by adding ingots to them.
And there is also a tanning rack which turns animal pelts (for e.g. snow wolf pelt) into leather and leather strips e.t.c
(for making light arnour)

I've picked up ingots here and there, and also picked up ore too.
What exactly is the use of ore? (for e.g. gold ore) Is it used to upgrade weapons or armour as it is, at a work station, or as I said.... can they be turned into ingots first?

OR (no pun intended here).... on the other hand...... do you just vendor them instead?

You can turn ore into ingots using a Smelter. In most cases, it takes two ore to make one ingot. Theres one in Markarth, one in Whiterun by Warmaiden's, one in Darkwater Crossing. A few mines have them.

Excuse you but yes, you use the smelter to turn ore into ingots. Every town has one and there are even a few in the wild.

They;re domed and look kinda' like igloos, but I don't think every town has one. I don't there are ones in Riften or Solitude (or is there one in the Castle courtyard).

You need two pieces of some ores to be able to make some ingots, and for steel you have to have at least one iron and one corundum ore.

The easiest smelter to find is in whiterun, you enter the town and its just on your right past the blacksmith.

Iron is the only ingot you can make 1 to 1 (ore to ingot). Everything else is 2 ores for an ingot.

The smelter question has been answered, and to add to this both gold and silver ingots can be used to make rings/amulets at the forge

Yep, a handy way to earn some smithing exp after dungeon crawling.

One weird thing is the Dwarven ingots - they are obtained by melting down certain pieces found in Dwemer ruins. Not all can melted down - the list and how many ingots can be obtained from each type is here:

Thank you for the very helpful replies everyone, and to you "buckom" for your info and the helpful link you posted about ingots too.
You've all been very helpful indeed.

Yes! This!

I actually bought the Breezehome house in Whiterun, and use the dresser and chest I bought to store some stuff I cannot carry.
So I found it ever so convenient when for the first time about 2 or 3 days ago, I discovered the smelter and forge outside Warmaidens, and it's ever so easy to find too, being the 1st place I come to on the right, everytime I enter Whiterun.

Thanks for the info.

Heheh.... that's a good one indeed!
That just made me giggle a lot. Nothing like a good laugh to brighten ones day.

Thats how I made a LOT of money in Skyrim - mining gold and silver (or iron and transmuting into gold), making jewelry and selling (either before or after enchanting each piece).

Doesn't exist (as was mentioned earlier in this thread), unless you can get a mod that adds one in. Kind of a silly oversight, really; Bethesda probably could have arranged it so one could fit without that much trouble.

NP. I got tired of dragging the wrong kinds of scrap metal out of the ruins with me so I have to have that page up. :P

I keep all of my Smithing stuff in that container just inside the door to the left ("Cupboard", I think).

That's my "this is going to be smithing materials and only smithing materials but eventually ends up holding most misc items because there's not enough space in Breezehome" cupboard.

I've actually been pretty good about that one on both characters. :P Most of the others I get lazy when I get rushed.

Oh, what dungeon was it that I was exiting? Some Dwemer ruin, theres a storeroom entrance outside the main building, inside there is a ton of Dwemer ingots. I was hauling a bunch of scrap metal, not remembering which could be melted down. I am seriously drawing a blank on the name. I remember I got attacked by a dragon, as I exited, and while fighting it, a sabre cat and cave bear attacked me
