can someone explain to me the minds of DMV instructors

Post » Tue Aug 30, 2011 12:10 pm

Another I was driving a stick shift and the instructor kept her hand on the emergency brake the entire time, which tells me that they were way too stressed to be a driving tester, and this tester was very overweight so it wasn't just an arm in the way of my shifting, it was a huge arm and I had to hold my arm at a wild angle to shift gears. That time I failed for not shifting at the proper times.

why dint you ask her to move her arm

Well all I know is that I'm a decent driver, and he failed me for what seemed to be a really stupid reason, I always drive defensively, assume the other person is going to make a mistake on the road, and drive slowish (I go like 2 or 3 mph below the speed limit). My turns are always smooth, I turn into and from the correct lanes, and I slow down to 5 mph below the speed limit before I reach an uncontrolled intersection and look both ways to make sure I don't get t-boned. I constantly check mirrors and blind spots. I'm a hell of a safer and better driver than 80% of people out there that have their license, i know that much.

" I always drive defensively, assume the other person is going to make a mistake on the road "

Assuming there is some other idiot about to make a mistake is the best advice i would give anyone to be honest.

The amount of times at a roundabout near my house this has saved me is incredible.

2 lanes. More than wide enough for 2 cars to go side by side, but i tend to hang back anyway, because for some reason people treat it as a single lane roundabout. Absolutely no idea why, it is clearly marked as 2 lanes.

Not that long ago me and the car beside me were sitting waiting to go out and the other person veered left as soon as they pulled out and just about rammed me before i got onto the bloody roundabout, again caution saved me and i managed to swerve enough for them to miss. If i hadnt been looking or paying full attention, that would of been a hit.

Then you get the other idiots cutting corners. Especially on country roads. If your on a country road and its only wide enough for 1 car, still stay as far over to your own side as you can. At least if your gonna hit someone its hopefully not gonna be a headon, or else you both might be able to swerve enough to get into the side.

I can honestly see why some people dont like driving or dont want to even go for the test. Its not yourself you need to worry about usually, its every other maniac on the road.

was that a highway instead of a road? i've only seen minimum speeds posted on highways

Certainly in the UK it doesn't matter on the road type. If you're holding up other traffic with your speed you can get a ticket.

When I was taking my test my DMV person gave me a 4 out of 5 on clutch mastery. Yea right! I was perfect, I guarantee it. I'll never forget that...The only points I got off on the entire test...That was 5 years ago and I'm still mad about it, haha.

You didn't even have to drive on an actual road to get your license?

No, they have a small course near the DMV building.

precisely, on the road there are speed limits but not speed requirements

Incorrect, actually. There's a speed requirement of 44mph on a road near my house I believe.

The rules here for the driving test are that you can't hit the pavement when you're parking, but it's ok even if it is very close. Actually it's better the closer you are. As for stopping at a 4 way intersection, it depends if there is a stop sign or not (again, the rules here).

So, if there's a traffic jam everyone gets a ticket?

DMV instructors are a special type of people. I had to take my test twice myself. My first instructor was a complete [censored]. Started off okay he got in and said "I will be giving you your exam today, take it slow don't get nervous I will be in control" I aced parallel parking but when he gave me some vague directions during the course and I asked what to do and he freaked out he said "I said I was in control! I will tell you what to do! You don't need to ask questions!" so needless to say drill sergeant driving instructor made extremely nervous then. I got failed according to him for not making it apparent I was checking my mirrors, I apparently needed to move my head in the direction of the mirror so he knew I was checking.

I went back the next day, jacked up parallel parking, practically ran off the road and got passed.

road road or highway road? 44mph seems a bit much for an ordinary road
