Can someone please talk me into giving the Stormcloaks a try

Sounds painful.

I've always preferred the two-handed weapons myself. :P

I think it is a personality thing. Some people like Imperials, others like Stormcloaks. All the logic in the world is not going to change anyones point of view. I am the opposite of you. I cannot stand Imperials. They seem like a bunch of petty bureaucrats to me. But I have an Imperial character so I can do the Imperial civil war quests. It's fun playing a character you consider to be a "jerk" sometimes. For me, that would be an Imperial. For you, that would be a Stormcloak.
I have been thinking of doing exactly this with a new Altmer character. I do not have any respect for the Skyrim Era Empire. It is not even a pale shadow of what it once was. But I have been thinking of making her a pro-Imperial. Why should she care about Talos worship? Pfft! An upstart round-ear is all he was. What does she care about Nordic freedom or their culture? They're humans after all! That is like pigs having a culture. At least the Empire knows how to heel and obey their elven masters, as all humans should. With their help all the humans will eventually become obedient slaves.

If I can enjoy playing an Imperial, I am sure you can enjoy playing a Stormcloak. They get to swagger a lot and drink mead, and boast and shout and fight with a big Nord axe. What's not to like?
That sounds like a fun vacation from Real Life. Sign me up!

Because the Nords are very proud people, and will sacrifice their blood for their lands. They fight for Skyrim, Talos, and to live free.

Imperials are shills to kings and politicians. Robots, who step and fetch for crooked royalty.

Imperials look to treaties, when they are losing, to be anothers puppet, Nords are willing to die for their freedom.

You could just make a Nord character that's very very very proud of his country. That is what I decided to do last night while playing. That's about the only 'nice' way that I can think of to justify joining though.

I find that peoples opinions on Ulfric vary greatly depending on their opinions of the Nord race. And sometimes their IRL race.

Dunmer for life right here though. Ulfric can choke on a fireball.
Dunmer for sure, so even though dark elves live in a slum I joined the storm cloaks, after all the empire abandoned us when black marsh was conquering us, they've done nothing to gain my allegiance.

I've been trying to get myself in the mood to support them in one of my playthroughs, but every time i just get upset with their standings and how Ulfric treats people that I end up storming right over to Solitude and doing the Legion again.

Roleplay a redgaurd character. Honestly redgaurds would have more reason to fight for the stormcloaks than even nords themselves... because they were literally betrayed by the empire, and they have proven that they can beat the thalmor/aldmeri dominion. Disdain for the empire + Valid belief that a single province can defeat the aldmeri dominion.

Didn't the Empire purposely leave legions behind in Hammerfell?
General Decianus did, against orders. He found a loophole to let the redguard legions remain behind when the legion was ordered back to the Imperial City. http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Skyrim:The_Great_War

In Hammerfell, General Decianus was preparing to drive the Aldmeri back from Skaven when he was ordered to march for Cyrodiil. Unwilling to abandon Hammerfell completely, he allowed a great number of "invalids" to be discharged from the Legions before they marched east. These veterans formed the core of the army that eventually drove Lady Arannelya's forces back across the Alik'r late in 174, taking heavy losses on their retreat from harassing attacks by the Alik'r warriors.

Ulfric's right hand in teddy clothes are one of the biggest reason to join them, going to war with him on your side while playing some type of savage character yourself (I played some sort of bear shaman (Inspired by Age of Conan)) is pretty epic.

Did you hear Ulfric talk to his general in his castle? You still need someone to talk you into it? Hmm.....

I'm so glad I slaughter high elves in droves, my hatred has even gone to the point of me killing every named NPC in the towns that's a high elf and mount their heads on a pike to show them off. You my dear are why I choose the Stormcloaks every time and I eliminate high elves with extreme prejudice, when I'm done it looks like what the Predator does to Arnold's men in the first movie.

Politics are as good as any other reason. My first character, an Argonian, joined the Stormcloaks and while he didn't approve of some of their methods (mainly the racist ones) it would be quite the hypocrisy if he was willing to die to defend Argonia's independence but not Skyrim's. The Empire was more corrupt to him and the very thought of them lying in bed with the Thalmor made it worse. Knowing about the racism that flowed in Cyrodiil also shines bad light at the Empire, especially when they try to hide it from public knowledge. Not to mention that the Empire made it personal when they almost wrongfully executed him and later his lover, then murdered a very close friend, desecrating the body in the process.

Even more so since the last major event Argonia suffered was 160 years ago. The Great War was 30 years ago. IIRC elves aren't the most productive breeders and since Argonians have had more than a five times longer time span than the Thalmor to rebuild their military, the two factions have at the very least even military power.
Under Hist influence, the daedra were forced to close the Oblivion gates themselves because of the Argonians' ferocity. The elves didn't fare as well as the Argonians. So Argonians under Hist influence are quite the threat.
EDIT: And to my knowledge, no faction has ever truly conquered Argonia. Not even Tiber Septim or Reman II succeeded. The inner swamplands near Helstrom has always been Argonian.
Very true, it has always been unwise to go against the Hist. I acknowledge their power and wisdom as they are the oldest sentient being on the continent. The one area where the Thalmor would have more power than Black Marsh is if they break the Mundas Black Marsh will also break and destroy the Hist as well as the Argonians. I also think if the Argonians went into full fledged warfare with the Aldmeri Dominion outside of their borders they would fall, but on their homeland it is futile because they have the protection of the Host trees, to my knowledge as well Black Marsh has never truly been conquered.

It was a province of the Empire though wasn't it ? Wether it was conquered by force or diplomacy doesn't make any difference, it was still conquered.

Yeah sure. Make a Nord character. Then join the Stormcloaks.

One does not simply walk into Black Marsh.

What would happen? Another Knahaten Flu, infecting and killing everyone except the Argonians.
That epidemic wasn't a coincidence either. The Hist and the Argonians are bidding their time.
I think the Hist would unleash something new and strange if anything, something the populace would not know anything about at first, I am curious what will happen with the Hist and Black Marsh especially after reading The Infernal City and Lord of Souls.

Just roleplay a character that would support the Stormcloaks. It's a fairly simple process...

It's not hard to see the sense in their cause. I mean it's not perfect but neither is the Empire..
