Can't use the new DLC!?

Post » Fri May 27, 2011 4:09 am

Like most users I have completed fallout and then downloaded the new DLC thinking I could continue the game after the credits... Boy was I wrong!! The only save points I have are on the last quest so in order to play the add on, I have to restart the game. What a load of b******* a complete waste of 800 points!

Why don't they warn you before you download the new add on!?!?

They did... about six months before the game was released.

"They will not release any broken-steel type DLC's in the future."

Actually, if you've read a description of the DLC anywhere 90% of the time there's a mention of loading a previous save from before the end of the Main Quest or, in the actual game, there's a big paragraph of text that pops up on your screen telling you something like:

HEY, THIS IS YOUR LAST REAL CHOICE TO MAKE BEFORE THE END OF THE GAME. IF THERE'S ANY QUESTS YOU WISH TO COMPLETE BEFORE MOVING INTO THE FINAL BATTLE AT THE HOOVER DAM, DO IT NOW. IF YOU'RE READY TO MOVE FORWARD INTO THE POINT OF NO RETURN, THEN SELECT THE OPTION THAT YOU'RE NOT READY YET. OTHERWISE, LET'S GO!

You should read things that take up a majority of your TV screen.

Why did you think that? None of the promotional material says that, the interviews have firmly said there won't ever be a freeplay after the end DLC, and even in Fallout 3, you had to wait until the third DLC to play after the end.

Seriously. :|

Why don't they warn you before you download the new add on!?!?

For much the same reason they don't say "don't forget to breathe when you're playing! We don't want our customers suffocating!"

I think you and many other people are kissing Bethesdas asses. It has nothing to do with assumptions or lack of reading. They are the ones who are assumming that everyone that Is playing Fallout NV has played Fallout 3 and knows to have additional saves to play DLC.

First, they make a game that's broken and has plenty of quest problems, but they damn sure made it so you can't leave the final quest.

Second, why can't we blame Bethesda for dropping the ball? This is a terrible decision and it was a terrible decision in Fallout 3 that as a company should have listened to their community last time around and gotten It right.

Last, If this DLC is supposed to be played before you reach the end of the game then do me a solid don't [censored] charge for it and try to pass it off as DLC. This should have been part of the core game, period.

Bethesda is responsible for patching in a way to get out of the final game save. They basically conned people into a second or third play through. Congrats Bethesda!

Since the game is meant to be played for it's replayability, isn't this a good thing?

Not at all but making a game compelling enough to play through again and forcing your players to pay 10$ to play through again is a terrible practice. Having every intension to play through again it still pisses me off because I didn't want to finish the game to immediatly have to start over to get value out of ten dollars.

Forcing?
Besides, there's still the pop up before the final quest, if he had read that and made a save prior to the final quest then he and others wouldn't have this problem.
They still only have themselves to blame for not heeding the advice and saving before the final quest.
Neither Bethesda nor Obsidian is at fault for gamers not paying attention.

They are completly at fault, putting a disclaimer in that says this will end the game and then selling dlc that takes place before that point is ass backwards.
I don't understand why you and many others are saying it's the players fault Bethesda and Obsidian were fully aware this is how the dlc was going to work.
That said it should have force saved to give players the option for the future and not assume that players can see the future for the game and make additional saves "just in case".
Saying that Bethesda and Obsidian are not responsible is ignorant, I wouldn't expect anything of a player then what is given to them.
By making DLC like this they are making people do something that is not normal for a console gamer which is save more often then the game indicated is needed.

That said, I don't want to continue after the last mission but given the option to leave the Hoover dam, to go back out into the world.

so Bethesda/Obsidian make this happen you already got my 10$.

There's a big box that pops up at the point of no return. Ignoring that is ignorance.

Seriously 90% of GAMES END! The only exceptions are Morrowind, Oblivion and post-Broken Steel Fallout 3 and games that allow play precisely to sell DLC (ie: Mass Effect 2 and Dragon Age: Origins)

And I hope they never release a DLC that allows play after end UNLESS thats all it does. No new quests, no new weapons, armour and items, no new NPCs and creatures and no new locations. That way those who want to continue can and those of us that don't won't be missing out on content.

Just point out where in that message it explains this decision will effect future DLC and I'd be more then happy to except defeat in this matter.

I still don't see how it's the developers fault.
FO3 had several DLC's and it was a given that New Vegas was going to have them as well, in fact, they said they were before the game was released IIRC.
So expecting the player to save before the final quest?
Well... Yeah?
That's why they had the pop up, to make sure people saved before hand.
If not for the DLC then for themselves.
In case the player wanted to do additional exploring or side quests or collection hunting.
And being an RPGer for 12 years I've learned to save a lot.
New RPGer's aren't screwed over at all, they flat out gets a pop up handed to them on a silver plate telling them they should probably make a save before entering the final quest.
And finally, do some research, not you specifically but others.
I NEVER buy a game, DLC or expansion before I know a greater deal of info about it.
If some people decide to just up and buy something without researching it first then again, their fault.
It's like ordering a pizza cause it's name sounds good and being mad when finding out it has mushrooms on it. (Which lets say you/I/someone don't like.)
If they did the research they'd know the DLC could not be played if you are inside the Dam.

so your saying that the pop-up at the end of the game is sufficient warning for a new player? Ask a new player and let them tell you.
and research? people shouldn't have to search the Internet to compare previous games to this one to see how the DLC is going to work.

...

Dude, people should NEVER assume anything, plus I think there are like 10+ threads about the game not being played after the endings, and usually point of NO RETURN means you can't RETURN after ENTERING it... Ever.

So, yes it is a sufficent warning. Plus people should actually read the DLC description, it doesn't say anything about it continuing the game post-ending.

Again I never said it should but it should give the player the option to LEAVE Hoover dam as part of the DLC. Maybe another pop up that just says hey check out the dlc before your done.

To quote Josh Sawyer on the game ending:

What was the decision behind the definitive ending? There was a lot of moaning and arguing about Fallout 3 having a hard ending and in the end we got a DLC that allowed for an open ending. Don't you expect the same to happen?

Sure, but I also think that would happen if we allowed players to play past the end of the game but didn't show the impact of their actions on the world. There is a lot of reactivity to your actions at the end of the game and we give the player a very clear warning when they are approaching the main plot's conclusion. We felt that having an endgame denouement with a large number of far-reaching effects was too important to either allow the player to continue playing in a world that didn't react to any of those things or make the endgame states minimalistic. There is a lot of reactivity to your actions at the end of the game and we give the player a very clear warning when they are approaching the main plot's conclusion.

All this was common knowledge months before the game was released.

There was a warning in the game when you were about to enter the point of no return. May have been a good place to make a save before continuing? Then you could have used that save to play the DLC. If you had played any of the DLC (other than Broken Steel) for Fallout 3, you would have known what the DLCs were like. Operation Anchorage, Point Lookout, The Pitt, and Mothership Zeta ALL take place within the play through, not after the end. These games are not like most console games. You need to save often, not only because you might die, but because there could be a glitch or bug that might screw you if you don't, or there might be something that you want to replay to get a better outcome. You mean you have no saves from before the warning? Just burned your way through the game, right? Used quicksaves? You just kept overwriting one save? When the warning about the point of no return appeared, did you read it?

I presume a large part of the problem is that of minimal saves, as in they (I'm using 'they' in the generic mode and not aiming at anyone) only have saves from after the point of no return.

Oh well, if I remember right the P.O.N.R. said you should save before going after that point. :|

First it doesn't say to save at least not that I recall.

Second don't quote something that the developer said, really? Do you think that every person playing this game was that into it before hand they were following every comment coming out of Bethesda//Obsidian?
Your use of "common" knowledge actually refers to the minority of gamers.
That said your basing your entire argument on previous games. This is Fallout New Vegas not Fallout 3.

People who didn't play Fallout 3 or don't follow the Internet for updates are the ones who are having problems. These are the majority of players. Not you.
You can quote Bethesda/Obsidian all you want, and say players that are complaining should have done x or y. It doesn't change that the complaint it merited.
