Oh Canada, our home and native land...

Post » Fri May 27, 2011 5:33 pm

Yup, thats right. The Canadian national anthem is being reviewed and may be changed because of the line 'True patriot love in all thy sons command' to 'True patriot love in all thy doth command' or something along those lines. Why you ask? Because some feel that it is sixist..I could write a long winded response about this and how it is just a political distraction, but that would be political. So its not happening. I personally feel that this is absolutely ridiculous. So do most people that I have talked to. There is this one girl in my Civics class who believes so strongly that the anthem is sixist, and we got into a huge debate over it. I finally was able to shut her up by saying "So, (NAME), did you EVER have a complaint about the anthem before? Ever? Did you ever think before that it was written by sixist pigs and it should be changed before this came up in the news?" She sat down..

Anyways, you guys don't want to hear my life story :P What are your opinions on this? Please keep it non-political and if a mod feels that this is already too political then, of course, go ahead and lock it up.

I'm afraid that it will go political but I don't find it sixist and those that do find it sixist just want something to knit-pick with. It could be worse.

This makes me think of the time when the song Bah Bah Black Sheep was changed to Bah Bah Rainbow Sheep because apparently Bah Bah Black Sheep was racist

Actually I only know the first 4 lines. After that, I lose it. :P
So I never noticed, and I don't care at all wheter they change it or not. It's not like I'll learn it once in my life. :)

It's sixist as hell, how can you not see that? All thy SONS command? Oh, oh, oh, so women can't "command" things? They belong in the kitchen, is that it? What, they should just cook and clean all day? The anthem quite obviously was designed to purposely suppress women. What's next, all thy Caucasians command? Sickening. Even though I'm a manly man (who's manly), I am DISGUSTED by this and hope it's changed ASAP. Absolutely disgusting.

Spoiler
Honestly, if you couldn't tell I was being sarcastic... wow...

Also in the original star treks Kirk used to say "where no MAN has gone before" and it was changed to "where no ONE has gone before."

Similar to people wanting to change the Pledge of Allegiance in schools since it has god in it.I think it is just something you don'tmess with.It may not be perfect but its the way things are.People today are too touchy on the subjects such as race and religion(not that I have anything against the forum rules they make since). You just have to learn to deal with things.

Non issue. You should take a look at the Dutch national anthem, in which we proudly sing that we are of German blood and are fiercely loyal to the king of Spain. Now there's a national anthem in need of reviewing. It makes even less sense now than during the Dutch Revolt.

our own national hymn is called "God of Justice"

naturally, some pricks tend to complain, but we who like it don't bother to listen to them

it's our anthem, you don't get to redo it because it hurts someone's touchy-feely sensibilities

Outside of sporting events, who even pays attention to National Anthems?

I thought the whole PC movement had run out of steam, but I guess not.

I think 'sons' sounds so poetic. I, for one, see the poetic and gender neutral value in applying male generalities to things. I mean, they do it in Latin-based languages all the time--groups of both genders are classed in the male.

All I will say on the subject is that the government suspended itself for 2 weeks and this is what came out of it.

I dont even know England's national anthem. I imagine it being the same anthem drunken football fans sing loudly and out of tune every time i'm getting the train from manchester.

Lulz. On that subject, the irish constitution is absolutely hilarious in a sad way, and definetly needs to be changed to be more modern. You'll know what I mean if you http://www.constitution.org/cons/ireland/constitution_ireland-en.pdf

Anyway, on topic, this is just over the top. No one gives a crap. And politicians shouldn't give a crap either just because some soccer mom probably sent them an angry letter.

There's a reason we only sing the first two verses of ours. This is verse six:

Lord grant that Marshal Wade
May by thy mighty aid
Victory bring
May he sedition hush
And like a torrent rush
Rebellious Scots to crush
God save the King

It wouldn't make much sense for scots to call for their own destruction would it?

I had to learn our anthem in French which was hard enough to remember. I'm not singing this new version if this runs it's course.
