I cannot best you...

"Best" is perfectly good English, but it's certainly archaic.

I suppose you could use it to get distance between you and your enemy - then consider that a "peaceful" win?

No, I cannot best you is more appropriate and proper.

Indeed it is for the Medieval fantasy theme and closer to the Shakespearean way of talking.

I would let them go, but they always come back.

There`s only one guy who I let go because he actually jumped into a lake and swam away. Never saw him again.

Sounds like awfully bad English. 'I cannot beat you' sounds better to me.
It's old english.

Letting them go just means they're going to get back up and fight again.

I actually think it was a real mistake having the NPCs say this when you're fighting them, if you're playing as a good hero character, as I always do, it is a real immersion breaker when I'm forced to decapitate someone pleading 'I cannot best you!', that instantly turns me into the bad guy!

I agree, but still I wouldn't want the lines left out. It's just too funny to hear "victory is your's" or "I cannot best you" in the middle of beating down a bunch of bandits. I'm guessing there is or soon will be a mod to address the surrendering, so I'm just happy for the hilarious voice acting.

It seems easy enough to fix is the issue I always have. When the NPC reaches his surrender point, drop weapon, run the cower script. If you don't kill them, they run for the entry point of the area and disappear, and a certain amount of gold is added to your inventory.

I sometimes hit people, who are talking trash about me. When they fall to the ground I sheet my weapon and the fight stops. Most of them are actually a lot nicer to me after that. I was surprised it actually works just don't try it with any guards around...

No because they get back up and try to fight again. I really wish people would surrender for real.

Initially, I did leave them be with my first char. BUT, since they don't "flee", allowing them to live is pointless, they'll come after you again. Allowing them to live is moot as you'll have to kill them anyway. After a couple of times RPing only killing those who attacked me, my PC realized that bandits (et. al.) are scum that will not quit, they'll just stab you in the back... so less RPing, more killing outright.

I sometimes let them go as they never try and attack me again, but i also sheath my weapons when they say it so that may be why.

Does that actually work? I though they always attacked after gaining their health back.

"Death is highly overrated!"
"Aye."
*axe to the face*

"I cannot best you!"
"You bet you can't"
*axe to the face*

"No more! I yield! I yield!"
"Fair enough."
*sheathe axe and turn around to walk away*
*enemy gets up and attacks me with a power attack*
"Raaaaargh!"
"What the..?"
*axe to the face*

Hey, I don't try to kill 'em....I just hold out my sword and they keep throwing themselves on it! I can't help it if there are scores of suicidal types populating Skyrim!

Maybe they are shouting it to deceive you? They intend for you to put your weapon away thinking they have surrendered, so that they can turn around and attack you. Maybe that was what the intended effect was?

If the majority of them actually weren't lying when they say this then I would probably let them go. I've only ever had 2 bandits and one thief walk away after surrendering.

"Best" is perfectly good English, but it's certainly archaic.

"I can not best you" is far better than "I can not beat you"

But I feel bad with my good character to finish off someone who says that or even worse "Mercy!", or "I submit"

If someone says "Fall back we are routed" it's a little easier.

Fortunately if I have a follower they will finish off the enemy for me. Lydia does not seem to show mercy.
