I cannot best you...

If your fighting and your enemy either falls to the ground or runs away, do you let them go?

No. If it were up to me I wouldn't choose to fight every single bandit I come across. They're the ones who come after me. No mercy.

No point. They just heal and come back for more.

Letting them go just means they're going to get back up and fight again.

I actually think it was a real mistake having the NPCs say this when you're fighting them, if you're playing as a good hero character, as I always do, it is a real immersion breaker when I'm forced to decapitate someone pleading 'I cannot best you!', that instantly turns me into the bad guy!

If they actually submitted and/or ran away for good, then maybe, yes.
But since they don't, and come back to fight again and again, kill em.

Seeing as how they can see their inferiority and are then stupid enough to come back for more I consider it my heroic duty to take them out of the gene pool.

Also I'm an OCD hoarder, fool might have that 999th set of fur boots I desperately need.

No because they get back up and try to fight again. I really wish people would surrender for real.

I would love for them to become neutral after they say that thing. It would add to a good alignment rp to be able to spare them (and add to an evil rp when you kill them mercilessly).
Maybe mods will take care of that.

They attack you only if you get too close. Anyway I don't care about letting them live. I once tried to spare a bandit's life when he asked mercy and fell to the ground. After a moment he got up and tried to attack me again.

Yesterday while playing, my character happened across three bandits, one of them went immediately into cower position, battle had not even started until the marauder with him noticed my character.

What would be cool is if those that surrender could be taken prisoner and handed over to the nearest guards for a reward.

Sounds like awfully bad English. 'I cannot beat you' sounds better to me.

I sometimes let them go as they never try and attack me again, but i also sheath my weapons when they say it so that may be why. However I only let them live if it's an outside encounter then I tend to follow them annd wait for some critter to finish them off then laugh.

I'v seen a mudcrab do that and the guy had like half life left, I tried to lure the mudcrab up the hill toward the remaining threat but it went back to it's pad.

For the life of me I can't understand why they had the NPC's say that line. I've never had one actually surrender. They always wait a few seconds and then get back up and attack. I've even had them start to run off after I don't kill them but then turn around and come back to attack. Now I just look at it as an easy kill. They should have allowed us to actually spare them. I tried to but since it doesn't work I'm certainly not going to allow them to have another shot at me.

I only leave the last man standing if its out in the open world. So he can run home and tell a story about how dovahkiin bested him and his men.
I remember letting them live in dungeous at earlier levels. It almost always ended up with me being surrounded.
I really wish that they would quit fighting a few times when they yield. But as things are it seems the npc's are villains trying to take advantage of the heroes good nature.
