Canon Question

Post » Tue May 17, 2011 2:39 am

Seeing as the game hasn't been released yet, we don't know.

That's true, without seeing how each option ends, we really can't guess which one will be considered canon. And even once we've seen how the game ends, we still can't really be sure what future games will do. Of course, depending on how the ending of the game would impact the setting, it's possible that future games won't need to tell us how it ended at all.

Since it's been established that the "good" ending is used for lore, can anyone think of an example of a franchise that used the 'evil' ending to set canon for the next game?

Half Life 1

Gordon Freeman opens up a rift to another dimension, lets in all sorts of alien critters then gets filed off while the whole world goes to hell. In Half Life 2 Gordon is thawed out, dumped 20 years later in East Europe somewhere and has to fix what he screwed up in the first game.

Did you have a choice to NOT open the rift? Linear games that end amiguously or with a 'bad' ending have to be taken outta consideration here, since there isn't an alternative to the story.

The first Shadow Hearts RPG picked the "bad" ending as the one that continued into SH: Covenant.

I really hope they stick to being vague or use an all new combined ending that covers most important variables (more practical). OR use a save game importing system to determine the status of the world due to your previous decisions.

I feel canon is the worst way to go about things in rolplaying games.

It makes sense that things are kept vague but any vague mention should be the mention of good things. FO2 does not mention how there was a Vault Dweller that was the "scourge of the wasteland." They love him and build statues to him.

Going off topic a bit. Seeing as how FO4 most likely be on the East Coast do you think Beth will change the PA to Western Styles or stick with the ones they had in FO3? Or will they at least put in a Damage Threshold?
I think it really depends. In my viewpoint, T-45d Power Armor was the first model (at least I believe that's the lore. Correct me if I am wrong), and while T-51b is much better, since it came several years afterwards and close to the war, it was in short supply. Thus the east coast had a surplus of the weak T-45d in order to ensure that the President and other officials in D.C. and possibly the U.N. in New York (if it exists) were kept safe from riots and such. So in short I think they'll probably stick with T-45d just to keep their lore in check, but will probably have another T-51b, just won't have it as the primary model like it'll be in New Vegas.

As for Damage Threshold, I see New Vegas as a stepping stone for Bethesda. When they made Fallout 3 they left out a lot of stuff the fans would've loved to have in the game, and they'll see what's popular with New Vegas and what isn't. I can assume based on the popularity of weapon mods we'll have those in Fallout 4, but as for Damage Threshold it'll probably be again, based on the fans reactions. Do they prefer this over Damage Resistance, or do they prefer DR?

The word you were looking for was "Canon" I thought this would be a thread about portable artillery cannons....good job getting my hopes up.

Mass Effect used both.

If by that you mean getting the second of two e-mails then yes, they did.
