Oh I recall this feeling. I seriously thought you had to find a way yourself to the top of the mountain, so I did. Didn't pass the 1000 steps road either, only two annoying trolls who almost caused me to die multiple times as I tried to run from them and either fell a good height, got stuck between the rocks or couldn't run further because the ground was too steep. I've had to run straight into the arms of the pursuing trolls a few times to find another way ... Eventually, I ended up above High Hrothgar, had difficulty getting to the road leading to it because the mountain downhill was too steep, and had to run all the way down the 1000 steps because I was being pursued by the last troll. During that run, I encountered exactly one pilgrim, and it was the last one I've ever met there since then. The troll must've gotten him ...

Oh, and I was laughing right in Klimmek's face later on when he mentioned you would only encounter some wolves or bears on the road ... Yeah sure pal, I guess those bears must've been at a Halloween party then huh, and were actually asking me for candy instead of clawing at me.

Walking from Whiterun to ivarstead via riverwood/ Helgen and from there east is just as long I think.

There's a shortcut through the mountains however. Follow the signs direction Windhelm/ ivarstead from Whiterun. After the river the road turns left/north on the path. Soon after that you have a crossing with a path to your right which leads through the mountain. Just follow this up. It eventually merges with another path that starts at fort Amol I believe. Don't go down there but stay straight ahead. From here you're already close to ivarstead.

I was advocating fast travel to Helgen. You arrive on the SE side where you entered during the tutorial. It's about 5 minutes from there to Ivarstead going past a stormcloak camp, Haemar's Shame, the Alchemist Shack, and Honeystrand Cave. I am not sure which path up you're talking about. There is actually a very hidden mountain trail that switchbacks many times across the cliff and eventually climbs up the top roughly over the the cliff, it's basically above Lost Knife Hideout. However, it is really a haul and also takes you past an area with a Wispmother. It's really "rough going" compared to the road.

I stumbled upon the path coming up from Riverwood. I followed it, and eventually walked right into Ivarstead. Not really an issue.

It did take all of a long ass time to go up to the top, however. Especially with the nasty little surprise for a low level character.

That little surprise was pretty cool the first time I saw it. I was so confused/mystified that I had to investigate...

I got lost the first time I did it.

I fell down the mountain a few times before realising the path did'nt literally go up all the way, but dropped for some reason.
At one point I fell all the way down from near the top.
Ivarstead is the easiest way up.

You can take a carriage to rifton, then ride or walk to were Ivarstead is.
