You can get to Ivarstead from Riverwood, there's a road that goes there between the mountains. Just follow the road signs, if it doesn't say "Ivarstead" go towards "Riften" instead. From Ivarstead the road to the top starts from the bridge.

I had that same problem first time around, even once I'd found Ivarstead. Wandered pointlessly for hours, then all of a sudden I was like ..... "Hey, is that a bridge? And steps going up?" Sheesh. Embarassing, but in a single player game, who's to know?

Everyone, now that you posted it in the internet :hehe:

Oh, and if you play on PC, get this map mod: http://skyrim.nexusmods.com/downloads/file.php?id=4929. Makes navigating a whole lot easier.

Going from Whiterun to Ivarstead can be a bit of an adventure, particularly if you try going north of the mountain or you're not sticking to a road. However it is necessary to start your accent from Ivarstead, if you try climbing the mountain from any other point it will eventually become too steep to proceed.

If you do get to Ivarstead chances are there will be two people talking about High Hrothgar by a bridge just north of the town.

I got lost following the road signs too in the beginning. If you are really frustrated, one thing you might want to do is to go back to Dragonsreach (fast travel if you like by clicking on it on the map.) Then talk to Farengar the wizard. You can buy a spellbook for Clairvoyance. The spell will highlight the road and tell you whcih way to go to reach your selected destination.Clairvoyance will make you take the Southern path through the ruins of Helgen, which is pretty neat.

The Clairvoyance spell can be a time-saver and helps avoid frustration. You might like it. It shows you the way to your goal when you cast it...and it mostly works just fine.

haha, I got :ninja:

I disagree with you there. Because of the massive cliff that runs along the route, the road that way requires you to go almost to Riften before doubling back. It is massively longer and more difficult. (Until you zoom in and tilt the world map quite a lot, the extent of that chasm is not really clear.)

The short way to get to Ivarstead is to go to Helgen, and then take the road East past Orphan Rock and Haemar's Shame through an easy mountain pass

I discovered a shortcut to Ivarstead, which involves running up a small path east of the Stormcloack camp in Whiterun.

Walking from Whiterun to ivarstead via riverwood/ Helgen and from there east is just as long I think.

There's a shortcut through the mountains however. Follow the signs direction Windhelm/ ivarstead from Whiterun. After the river the road turns left/north on the path. Soon after that you have a crossing with a path to your right which leads through the mountain. Just follow this up. It eventually merges with another path that starts at fort Amol I believe. Don't go down there but stay straight ahead. From here you're already close to ivarstead.

I stumbled upon the path coming up from Riverwood. I followed it, and eventually walked right into Ivarstead. Not really an issue.

It did take all of a long ass time to go up to the top, however. Especially with the nasty little surprise for a low level character.

I remember my first time going to High Hrothgar. Accedently took the wrong fork in the road, ended up in a giant's camp. My corpse likely set a record for getting up to the top of the mountain.

It took me a while to figure out how to get there. Buy the clairvoyance spell and follow the pretty blue trail.

Don't forget that if you walk the 7,000 steps to High Hrothgar and read all the emblems along the way,
Spoiler
you will receive a special blessing called Voice of the Sky that will last for 24 hours. Animals will not attack you or flee from you during that time.
The emblems have information about the story too. It can be done multiple times. :tes:

I'd reccomend going through the mountains past Helgen instead of the long way around if you are having trouble. Just stay on the path.

High Hrothgar.

I concur with MJFJD: if you fast travel to Helgen, then follow the (low) path away from it to the east, you'll track through a valley. You'll get these encounters:
-Hunter with Horse: at least, the first time I've gone that way in each game, I've gotten this right in front of Haemar's Shame.
-Random Encounter: In the deepest part of the valley. Almost impossible to avoid, but in my experience often harmless.
-Wolves: They might get distracted by some goats if the goats ran in front of you.
-More wolves: These might get distracted by walking venison.

It's also much shorter than going around the north.

I sometimes get a dragon at Haemar's Shame.

I've gotten dragons there too; I have yet to see a dragon replace a normal random encounter though. ^^
