[REQ] Carriage Drives You Places?

Post » Sat May 26, 2012 10:33 am

I've been playing about with this idea just now.

It seems that the carriages, or at least the horses for the non-intro carriages are not the same; they aren't 'proper' horses (you can't kill them for example, and if you set a path for them they don't walk, they hover. They also aren't actually connected to the carts). Hopefully it shouldn't be difficult to find and rectify these differences once we have the CK.

I've managed to re-path the carriage from the intro cutscene (messily, using the console/Script Dragon) and the horses pull the carts along fine, though the pathfinding isn't exactly fantastic and the cart tends to tip over... I haven't tested over long distances though, I'm not sure if it would be better or worse, the AI have a tendency to cut corners on the roads which with a cart isn't going to be so good.

EDIT: I went on a slightly longer journey, ran into bandits. Apparently you can die despite not having an actual body at that point in the game.

Based on your findings though do you think it is a realistic idea to have carriages carry people across Skyrim?

Would this idea translate to boat journeys as well? There are a couple of smaller boat models in the game that might work on inshore waterways as well as the obvious large sea going vessels . I know usually people want a drivable boat in TES games, but I like the idea of an NPC controlled boat in the same way the carts move (Hey, and if all else fails, ridable horkers).

Basically this has been implemented in games like Red Dead Redemption and GTAIV. It's fun as hell imo and sorely missed in Oblivion and Skyrim.

How would a modder handle creatures on the road? They'd most certainly attack you, the other travelers, the horse or all of the above. If you're stuck in a riding sequence would you be able to get off and defend the carriage? What would happen when the fight was over? Would the ride reset and continue to the destination? What if the driver or horse were killed?

I wonder how it would work if, upon entering the carriage, you and all your fellow travelers, the driver and the horse would be added to a new faction which was friendly with all other known (hostile or potentially hostile) factions, then that faction could be removed upon the completion of the journey.
I can think of a few solutions...

Add the carriage to a special faction. Surely there is something they did in that beginning sequence to disable monsters from attacking, so whatever Bethesda did could be done for rides... unless their solution was that monster spawns were disabled.
Make the carriage sprint when monsters are near and give it unlimited stamina so it can always outrun anything that would decide to attack.

Having to stop for combat would defeat the purpose of a carriage ride IMO.

I would think so, although it might take quite a lot of work to get it to work well; and it's not really the kind of thing you'd use unless it did work well.

As for the tipping over; I didn't do anything to the speed, the horses were going pretty slow so I suspect it's that it's not really weighted properly; though it could be more the horses tendency to stray from the path a bit, you would have to be quite careful with forcing their paths. Either way travelling with the carriage upside down kind of breaks immersion...

Bump, as I can't see any current discussion active and the CK is out.

I support the idea of having actual carriages move you around the world. But I don't know how I feel about highwaymen or just being attacked by random things. Maybe there could be two versions of this mod: one where you get attacked by things and the other where the carriage has the TCAI thing going on.

I support your avatar, best one i've ever seen. Real carriages would be awesome aswell.

A lot of the dialogue needed for this is already in the CK. It's under 'DialogueCarriage' or something similar. Was probably going to be in the game anyway but was scrapped.

I have some ideas to throw out. When you hire a carriage, you could be given the option of several prices. The cheapest one will be for just you to ride, a medium one will be for both you and your companion and dog to ride, a deluxe option will be for some hired armed guards to ride with you for protection. The more you pay, the safer your travel. Weaker wildlife like wolves should scatter when they see your carriage, but stronger one like trolls or dragons should still attack you. I would also like it if you can shoot wildlife with arrows while in the carriage (like you could in Red Dead Redemption). Another change that could be considered, would be that you can come across an occasional carriage traveling the main roads if you are out and about. That way the world will feel like a more civilized place, with NPCs going about their business, travelling between cities for their own reasons. If this carriage has empty seats, you could pay to hop on.

Gonna be so bold as to say that this was done for Morrowind already, and I hope a similar aspect can be done for Skyrim.

Yup! abot made some really awesome mods for Morrowind!

Another snippet of evidence that Bethesda at least thought about doing this- All the (main) roads seem to be designed to be passable by carriages, ie no steps. This was not the case in Oblivion.

Yeah, while we're at it let's do away with the ridiculous encumbrance restriction shall we?

'Hey Ferb, I know what we're going to do today. Hey, where's Perry?'

Yes, I just quoted Phineas and Ferb, yes I find it funny. Yes, I'm going to look at carriages this weekend.

yes they had a lot of items ready to be placed in game , but those items where removed to streamline the game for consolles .... scrap the game jam , all those stuff should have been already included in the usd or euros you spent to get the game to make a complete game ....

you remember when Tod was saying the game had dynamic snow? Now then he publicized the dynamic snow as a one week created feature of the game jam, then he says he doesn't know if this feature will appear for payment or not ..... does it tells you something?

Gonna be so bold as to say that this was done for Morrowind already, and I hope a similar aspect can be done for Skyrim. as for dealing with creatures and attackers? the carriages would have convoy Guards riding along on horses much like the opening scene no? Its doable, if you've f'd around like and seveal others have you'll notice that the Carriages actually act like carriages in the opening scene.
Yep, this was actually done recently by a Morrowind modder already. We can only hope that we get some similarly talented coders from the MW or OB modding communities (or new blood) making mods like this for Skyrim. Some of the good old modders are starting to test the Skyrim waters; with time, we might see some really great mods.

I support this idea.

I just posted my Real Carriages mod to Steam Workshop. It illustrates the main reasons why this didn't ship with the game:

a - save/load doesn't work with the carriage
b - there's a huge amount of work to set up patrol routes that keep the carriage from clipping into obstacles along the way, and the physics of the carriage itself leaves something to be desired - it's much "lighter/bouncier" than you would expect

That said, I still find it fun and relaxing to just tour Skyrim by carriage. Have fun with it, and feel free to mine it for ideas.

Excellent. I just came to post that here, didn't realise it was a dev though. I'm curious to see what happens when you run into enemies.
