Catalyst 12.2 Avoid

Post » Wed May 30, 2012 11:40 pm

Installed Catalyst 12.2 (although system info says 12.3 for some reason) and here's the result;

These white dots are supposed to be light flickering in the water and on the wood as well

No idea what is going on in this shot.

I'm gonna install 12.1 again - It can be downloaded here if anyone needs to roll back as well;

Vista/Win7 (64bit) http://support.amd.com/us/gpudownload/windows/previous/Pages/radeonaiw_vista64.aspx
Vista/Win7 (32bit) http://support.amd.com/us/gpudownload/windows/previous/Pages/radeonaiw_vista32.aspx

Quick fix is to disable AA until 12.3 is released as it will fix the issue on 5 and 6 series graphics cards.

Set your AA slider all the way to the left that smells like Adaptive AA.

That's because it does not affect the 7*** series of cards, It causes image corruption on the 6**** series and older.
Stick to the 12.2 preview driver but do not touch the 12.2 pre cert or official release, Unless you own a 7970 you lucky git:)

I get weirdness like that on the 12.2 preview should have mentioned that I was using the preview. Only when using Adaptive AA however.

Bumping for great justice. This has been a known issue since the 12.2 pre-certs...seems to be a combination of using anti-aliasing with a pre-7xxx series card. It's even worse if you've got a Crossfire set-up. Nice to see they haven't even bothered with a hotfix...we're going to have to wait until the 12.3s come out, probably at the end of this month.

Sigh. Well, it's going to be a fun month in troubleshooting land, I guess. :P

If you can live without AA (or weren't using it anyway), or you've got a 7xxx card, go ahead and upgrade. Especially if you're experiencing any of the issues fixed in the 12.2 release. Otherwise--do yourself a favor and avoid this driver like the plague. General consensus is that if you don't own a 7xxx series card, you're not going to get much if any performance boost with this particular upgrade anyway. I think AMD should've just skipped the February (...well, now March, but) release all together. :rolleyes:

If you need to roll back your drivers, AMD does keep downloads of previous drivers available. http://support.amd.com/us/gpudownload/windows/previous/Pages/radeonaiw_vista64.aspx. 32-bit 7/Vista previous drivers link is currently 404'ing, naturally. 12.2 previews should be lurking around their website somewhere too. Just uninstall your current drivers, reboot, and reinstall with the package you want.

I'm surprised that AMD have not released a hotfix driver as they usually do release one, it's bad form considering that Skyrim is a hugely popular game.

12.2 previews are the best for non 7*** series cards & i will stick with them.

Thanks again. I did this last night and can play again. 12.2 is so bad I was afraid it was going to somehow damage my hardware.

I'm finding the http://support.amd.com/us/kbarticles/Pages/Catalyst121Previewdriver.aspx is the best for Crossfire-enabled systems.

For me, the release version of 12.1 causes weird flickering texture problems if you have 2 cards, especially in animated textures like candles and waterfalls. Disabling Crossfire in the release version of 12.1 makes the problem go away completely. I guessing the 12.1 preview has Skyrim-specific crossfire optimizations that were removed in the release version. (No idea why)

12.2 is really messed up. I spent over an hour cleaning it out and rolling back to 12.1 preview.

You'd better roll back to 12.1. I even got some FPS loss with 12.2 (hd 5850)

Was wondering how the 11.11c was now that the game has been patched quite a bit since launch. I might grab those if my occasional water flicker doesn't get solved soon.

Yes the 12.2 ruins Skyrim you get the multicolored triangles all over the screen regardless what AA type you have. AA has to be disabled completely. I tested this on my HD 6870. I would recommend the beta driver (.8.96) as I have no issues and a slight increase in FPS.

I just installed Catalyst 12.2 and loaded Skyrim. My latest save was just outside the entrance to Labyrinthian. I walk up to the entrance and see huge black and white square "pixels" on it - really bad artifacts. So I powered down, rebooted, and same problem.

I uninstalled using Install Manager, rebooted, reinstalled 12.1, and no glitches.

System is AMD 6850, Core2 Duo E8500 @4ghz, 4gb ram, Win7 64-bit. Skyrim settings are 1600x1200, 4xAA, 16xAF, Texture High, Radial High, Shadow Low, Decal Ultra. Only mod installed is Hi Rez texture pack from Bethesda.

Strange. Never had a bad driver until now - only installed official releases. I guess they put out a lemon.

Yeah it's bad news so is the 12.3 there is a thread discussing it here: http://www.gamesas.com/topic/1356797-catalyst-122-avoid/
I am still using 12.1 as well after a bad experience like that. Stick with 12.1 for now AMD is addressing the new 7xxx series cards driverwise at the moment and their focus is on that.

Well I have to take my hat off to AMD for completely ruining ESV SKYRIM, They have completely messed up the entire game with their latest drivers 12.2. From what I have discovered running my own tests it looks as though the problem is being caused by Antialiasing and Anisotropic Filtering. Disable these and tweak the Advanced options and you are back on your way. With AA AF enabled it all goes “Pete Tong.” Below is with AA and AF turned off, although I have a high resolution monitor with two AMD GFX cards in CrossFire X. The changes you make may differ. I cane manage without AA and AF enabled it still looks awesome.

Great Avatar and a great game :D
Did you try rolling back to 12.1 I get better performance and can crank everything to max including AA and AF.
Also I see in CCC you have AA set to Adaptive.....in my experience that is bad in Skyrim period. If you can run SSAA it is much better if not slide it to the left and just run MSAA.
