CAUSE OF NVIDIA GFX STUTTER!

Post » Fri May 27, 2011 3:34 pm

Ok so this was driving me nuts along with what it seems other Nvidia users as well. The game will constantly stutter when looking around when outside. I have 24gb of ram, 2 hex core processors and a 4GB quadro card so specs aren't the issue (also using the latest NVIDIA driver)

I can MAX EVERYTHING out, but when disabling the water section, the game runs smooth as silk. Ill try and investigate further but I think its a bug in the water shader code or something.

Everyone else running into this issue, try disabling the water tab and try again.

I have to wait until the 20th to get this game but I'll keep this in mind in case it helps.

I dont want to sound like an ass.
But are you mocking me about the thread I started?
I only ask because the specs I have.... you have double.

But if your non I'm going to try,
I'm sorry if I made wrong assumptions.
EDIT:
I'm running 3x gtx 470 and it didn't help at all. Glad you got it working though.

I doubt Quadros are for gaming. Your gigabyte count is reasonable though. What is a Hex processor?

I will keep in mind the Water issue though.

Still looking into it. Seems to do with the lower half the the water settings. Displacement maybe?

My laptop with an ATI card does NOT do the stuttering with everything at MAX so I think its an NVIDIA thing.

Anyone else able to get rid of the stuttering by disabling all the water stuff?

Idea - turn it back on, but in steam, go into the game's properties and try disabling the steam community.

Someone else was having crashing issues until they disabled this. As this loads as an overlay, I could see how it might cause what you are seeing.

Totally besides the point guys. Hex core = 6 core, im a professional 3d animator, no its not a server, and yes my quadro runs games as a 480gtx at stock clocks would except I get AA for free.

Back to the topic at hand here. It seems to be the water settings and only effect NVIDIA users running the latest 2 driver revisions.

GOT IT!!!

Ok, turn everything on and to the max EXCEPT:

-WATER-

Water Multisampling: Low
__________________________

After changing this setting and this setting ONLY, the game ran smooth as silk. The second even one of them is enabled to even medium, BAM, microstutter all over the place.

FANS - Try this and see if it helps
Bethesda - If you can, get an engine guy on this.

Thanks!

I'm afraid it didn't help my GTX 480. Even with the water settings on 'low' I get stutter and frame rates around 5 in some places.

THIS. It fixed my issue entirely. I have a Geforce 9800m GS. I tried updating drivers, but it seemed to make it even worse. After disabling the water tab, my game runs smooth as silk, even on the highest settings. Before, it was unplayable, even on the lowest settings.

For what it's worth, Fallout 3 has the same issue with water multisampling with recent Nvidia drivers.

I was having the stutter issue on my GTX 460, this water thing seemed to fix most of it. I'm still getting a little lag where I really shouldn't be, but it's substantially better than before (Almost to its full potential). I show that my GPU is only using ~15-30% of its processing power throught the entire time I played... that might be another issue NVIDIA has to look into.

Hmm, been playing for a few hours and I"ve not seen this issue on my system with a nvidia GTX285

However using 197.45 drivers. Windows 7 64 bit, core 2 duo Intel.

Works fine, not using ultra settings just high with some things tweaked up.
1920x1200 resolution.

No stuttering other than a occasional hiccup... so far anyway.

Course I've not go close to much water yet.. still mostly dikeing around the starter town area.

Sounds like they didn't fix any of the F3 graphic issues.

Are any of you running SLI?

Really svcks for the NVIDIA players...but i have an ATI card and i get framerate issues Only in combat with human enemies, and i noticed some choppiness when an NPC is running. The game auto-configured me to ultra-high...i'm guessing i should turn down some of the settings to high, but i was just wondering if any ATI users were having similar issues.

I would try and disable the water effect according to a couple posts i've read. Maybe lower some of the higher-end graphical tabs to High...honestly i havn't been able to mess with anything yet because i'm working :(

I think you're Quadro is based on a GTX 280 with an optimized BIOS for CAD work. That could be part of your issue with gaming performance (which is not what its designed to do).

I'm on a GTX 470 w/ AMD Athlon II x4 on win7 64-bit. I just tried setting the water tab changes and it GREATLY improved my framerate. The stutter is almost completely gone outside. I'm sure optimized drivers will be coming out within the next couple weeks, but it's kinda rough for now. Much more playable though thank you!

Just spoke with my bud at Nvidia. He said he was able to replicate this problem EXACTLY on both there quadro 6000's and geforce 480's. He said that turning down water multisampling to low fixed all the stuttering issues he was seeing as well (even when there is no water on screen) He says its going to be noted for Wednesday to hopefully we get a new driver!

I second that opinion, it is the npc. I know this because as soon as i kill some guy in a house, the fps just rose up big time.
