My 2 cents

Post » Mon Feb 21, 2011 2:19 am

Hey, I am new at this but for what it's worth I will give it a go. Personally I don't think it will make any difference. I have a 955 b.e. quad at 3.68 gigahertz a gtx 480, 8 gigs of ram and win 7 64. I own tes 4 modded w/ high resolution texture packs and other mods, also fallout 3 w/ all 5 dlc's and New Vegas. I am a great fan of large open world games and think they are a genius concept w/ rpg and shooter elements. I am also older and on a fixed income, I know, boo hoo! Which brings me to my point. I can play oblivion at 1980 x 1080 and performance is pretty good and a beautiful modded game. I use to be able to play Fallout 3 w/ it's typical issues but never the less it was playable, but for some reason not any more. I have uninstalled, reinstalled, patched and repatched, done codec update, compatibility (through win 7 ), driver uninstall and reinstalls (260. driver), searched forums etc. It freezes constantly and is completely unplayable. Since I am such a fan of these large open world games I was looking forward to New Vegas and prepurchased through Steam. Well sad to say but the the game has extreme npc lag, broken quest, stuck or even unkillable npc's sometimes etc, and it won't register certain buildings or locations sometimes when you find them. So it is unplayable unless I want to run around in varying degree's of slowmo picking plants! So out of 3 games and 5 dlc's I can only play one! Now I know that the good people at obs. promise to fix this, I just hope they do better than Bethesda did w/ fallout 3, it's old and still isn't fixed ! I also know that these are complex and that there are unforseen issues that will arise. SOoo I am not trying to be a smart A. or disrespectful. To some people a game is just a game and to others it is a new world of imagination and creativity even a work of art. To me it is very important because it allows me to do what I can no longer do in real life or would never do, run, shoot , fight aliens, whatever. But I feel that I have been robbed ! And I have, I know that sounds strong but what else would you call it? 3 Games and 5 dlc's, only 1 playable. I have spent a lot of money on these and even more time trying to get them to work. I have contacted Steam and they tried to help and then sent me to Obs. I have contacted Bethesda and it is the typical turn down your settings and patch etc, I have a gtx 480 and even on the least settings it makes no difference ! Obs. promises another patch is on the way. Wow I'm still waiting on a promised fallout 3 patch that will fix the game. The Brokenbryo game engine is about eleven years old and they have had plenty of experience with it. Bethesda brags that only they can release such a large game so quickly because of this engine which equals cheap cost. I believe them. Fast and cheap to produce. I do not blame the hard working people at these companies working hard under unrealistic deadlines, but I do blame the corporate thinking that rushes out problematic games on outdated tech with known issues and always promising to fix it and doesn't ! Still fixing Fallout 3? Only showing 3rd person view for p.r. Are we afraid the problems will show in 1rst person? To Bethesda and Obs. you could make more fans and even more money by just listening to your fans. I want you to be profitable and make more games, peace love and hostess twinkies! But the People in the know KNEW the game had problems and rushed it anyway. We would all be happier and you would make even more money if you would break this crazy cycle and respect your buyers. People love these games there is a hunger for these open world games. Stop making p.r. excuses and get it right, I don't expect perfection, but only one playable game? You can do better, the question is, is anyone listening. It's your choice get real and show who you really are and start changing the things that need to be changed OR crank out crap at the highest speed and cheapest cost and use p.r. to cash in as quick as possible. Personally I believe that if you really had any genuine credibility you would at the least fix these games, but I bet that as soon as the money ebbs that it will be the same old story ! I read how many say to be patient, I have been patient since oblivion, how much longer? To those who don't have these problems I am really happy for you cause I loved Fallout 3, and do love to play Oblivion, still has issues but at least it plays, just wish I could play Fallout 3 some more and New Vegas. Do you guys pay attention to your rep. online, or does it matter as long as there's a profit? To Bethesda and Obs, make your money the right way and listen to YOUR PEOPLE. Quit half A_ _ ing it. And fix my games or refund. We all know where thats going and I will be surprised if anyone reads this. My 2 cents.

You can look at this 2 ways - either all the Bethesda games you are trying to play are broken (although they used to work for you - at least Fallout 3), or there might be an issue with your computer.

The fact that Fallout 3 has worked on your computer (that is at least what I understand from your post), but is not working any more, gives you a strong hint that it might not be the games that are broken, but your computer that has some issues.

So here are some helpful suggestions. First of all - when was the last time you did a fresh install of Windows on your computer? Have you installed any codecs lately (since Falout 3 stopped working)?

I know it might sound drastic to you, but I think you should try to reformat your computer, and reinstall the Fallout games, as one of the first things to see if they are working.

I know many people who go on for years and years without ever making a fresh install of Windows on their computer, and unfortunately this very often can lead to a lot of problems, because programs/codecs, you thought you had unistalled left a bit of code, that interferes with some other program.

If you have done a fresh install of Windows, I am sorry for your loss, as this is one great game (might even turn out to be better than Fallout 3).

Oh - and when writing such a long post, it would really help if you could break it up in paragraphs. Really difficult to read as you have put it now.

Hey Acolyte, sorry I am a bad typer and writer, really. You are right that there could be other possible problems and I am looking at everything. Oblivion and fallout 3 have always had problems though, before and after each clean install I make about every 6 - 8 months, but Oblivion is playing and looking better now than it ever did cause it's modded with a lot of fixes and textures and it's on an ssd. Fallout 3 did at least play even though it would always crash a lot and have stutter problems like oblivion, and it's not modded. I noticed after New Vegas, and wanted to play some fallout so GFWL applied an update, and the new problems started and got worse, so I started trying to fix it which led to all I mentioned before, and I only added codec after all of these efforts. It also likes to be on c drive and it's not and I am researching this also, it used to be on c and had problems then. I recently did do a clean install and formatted both w.d. caviars also added an agility 2 ssd as c drive. All games except oblivion are on f drive. Oblivion is on c for better dynamic loading. So that you know, I have, left for dead 1+2 - dead space - all of crysis - civ 4 all - civ 5 - bioshock 1 + 2 - call of duty 4, 5, 6 - fear 2 - midieval 2 + kingdoms - empire tot. war + napoleon - call of prypyat + chernoble - enemy territory - metro 2033 - farcry 2 - borderlands - and more! Point is they all play great at full out settings, are on f drive, and good to great in stereo 3d. Only games I have ever had problems with are gamebryo games, honestly, not as bad as now though. Looking at GFWL also and actually uninstalled and reinstalled them. So I have done a lot of reading since oblivion in fact and found that all gamebryo games have a lot of the same issues and it's very old. Check out some tekkie reports on it by insiders. Bethesda didn't let Obs. update it and they had to use it, they also didn't have time - deadlines, and chistmas is just around the corner. Knowing much of this I had hoped that Bethesda would learn after all their experience with this and listen to the people still having problems to this day on these older games. As good as they are, they are also famous for problems and needing lots of patching. And I am not talking about typical problems and patching that all games need. Yes I am bummed cause I really like them and it helps me to play these for the reasons I said before, and I honestly believe they should stand behind their products completely. I will get fallout 3 to work it's just a matter of time, but these games will never perform completely right based on past experience and knowing all gamebryo games have this problem. Also no matter what the current problem is it doesn't release them from not cheaping us out, or not releasing a patch for fallout 3 and win7 compatibility which they are not talking about and some think it's because they are afraid it will detract from New Vegas sales, with it's current problems. They are finally going to retire Gamebryo after one more game maybe, and I hope their new secret game isn't oblivion 5 on this engine. Unknown game probably will be released next year and it's by Bethesda. I will listen to all suggestions that I haven't tried and start over if need be. Thanks for the effort and trying !

LoL - nobody reads anymore.
(Lord Of The Rings? Those are movies, heheh...)
Hi Tank7,
I actually run Win7 32-bit for just this reason!
Compatibility.
We were just talking (in another thread) about how these Beth games seem to dislike Win 64-bit.
And I had noticed when Fallout3 was new, people with terrible difficulties were invariably on 64-bit WinXP or Vista.
Don't like to say, but everything flawless on my rig (60 fps minimums).
Personally I think 3,000 MB of memory is lots... but I'm old.
Anyway, you could run a HD (or even a partition) with good ol' WinXP, for gaming purposes.
Or anything 32-bit! I don't think anyone requires 64-bit, but all new rigs these days come with it so, what can you do?
That's just the way it is (not saying it's good).
A guy on these forums had problems like you.
He said he was going to install on an old POS he had there with Celeron, WinXP and 2GB.
Guess what? Ran like a champion - no lags, no stutter. He was plenty upset...
But you're completely correct about them releasing it in rough shape, a not-ready-for-primetime player.
The game overall plays beautifully for me, but there are still issues (some of which I have encountered).
Anyway, I have Win7 64-bit DVD right here but have never used it yet...
So I guess I'm not much help.
Good luck,
Regards

Well, as I sad, I am sorry that you cannot get the game to run.

I know it is an old and very used "excuse", but in my opinion, the game is not broken, when it can be run flawlessy by so many people (me included). You cannot realisticly expect the QA department to test each and every PC configuration out there. I know this is of no reconciliation for you, but that is just how life is.

I know I wrote it earlier, but could not completely see if you had tried it before, but try to make a completely new install, only install the necessary drivers, and then install Fallout and see how it runs.

Alternatively I would advise you to post in the "Hardware and Software issues" forum including your directs diag and hope that some people might be able to help you.

For the record my game runs flawlessy on ultra high settings on my Intel Core 2 Duo E8400, 4 Gb ram, Ati HD 4870, game is installed on game partion (drive F) of a SSD HD, Windows 7 64-bit.

I did have problems with FO3. Removing all non M$ codecs solved that. I had slow frame rate issues on FO:NV, and a simple .ini tweak and the DX9 fix ended that. After that, i have had no technical problems with FO:NV...not one crash. (Phenom II x3, 8GB ram, GX 240, Win7 64 bit).

I'm just pointing out that not everyone have had the problems you are experiencing.

The state of affairs in PC gaming...that it is impossible to test every possible hardware/software configuration, effectively means that there can be no guarantees that any given software is going to work on any given box. When I buy a game, I expect it to be technically problematical. If it's not, then I am overly pleased. If it is, then, well, that's the unfortunate par for the course.

Ouch, that's a bit of a wall of text there. Try to break things up a little with a return every now and then, it makes things a little easier to read.

Anyway, I am also having some pretty bad stability issues and really hope they get fixed soon. I've basically put the game aside for the time being but I really wish I could get into it and not have so many crashes as the game has a lot to offer.

With regard to places not being marked after visiting them, I've found there are quite a few areas that don't have map markers. So once you visit them they won't appear on the map. I think if they put map markers for every area, or "dungeon" in the game the map would be a mosaic of map markers. :hehe:

I personally think it's a reasonable expectation to expect a game to work out of the box, even if it has a few niggly bugs or quirks. Especially if like me you have a very stock system with no extra programs running in the background, no mods, no alterations, just what's been provided by the developer.

I also recommend reformatting your computer and re-installing Win 7 but this time only install programs and drivers that are necessary to run your computer. Do not install any anti-virus or other monitoring programs yet. Now install Fallout NV and run it. This might help you narrow down any application and driver conflicts.

I run Vista 64-bit and I only had a small amount of errors/bugs with Fallout NV and had none that I can remember in Fallout 3.

Good luck with narrowing down your problem.

It is a wall isn't it! I am sure they will fix a lot but with this outdated tech (gamebryo) it will never be what it should.
And rushing to market in this condition shows a lack of respect to us.
One of the places not marking is the pump station that involves the quest to go to a vault and find a radiation leak, this quest and others simply won't work yet.
Papa Khan is another, no Melissa.
And yes it is reasonable to expect a game to work out of box and of course they always need some patching, but buggiest game of the decade as some are calling it.
It was rushed and they knew, but did it anyways.
That really is one of the major points I make about their corporate policy not respecting us by rushing this to market in this shape and it's not just pc it's xbox and playstation.
They should have the least problems because they are controlled platforms, but they are having a lot.

Reformatting, always do, already did, and will do again, all 1,500 gigs
I will do the av after like you said, usually do it 1rst for safety.
But keep in mind I have always before and after each clean install had problems with oblivion and fallout 3, also none of the other games listed above have ever given me these problems and it's a pretty good list.

Hi, you sound like a wonderful and forgiving person and I like that.
My only codec's are microsoft, updated now of course.
FPS are always good even in slowmo, the code is not optimal and gamebryo doesn't always execute it properly. This is known and not an opinion. Same in all gamebryo games-stutter-glitching, problematic etc.
Did the .ini
Did DX, and much more!
No change except the .dll did improve the terrible npc slowmo in New Vegas, but not as good or smooth as any of the non Gamebryo games I listed.
And of course not everyone has all these issues, BUT TOO MANY DO, honestly, and not just on pc.
On your last point I respectfully disagree. While I do expect games to have some problems and be patched thats normal.
However there aren't that many operating systems, and components all have to follow the rules for their particular systems, Play Station and xbox are totally controlled platforms.
All are having problems w/ New Vegas. The codes are written just for them = Play station New Vegas is written in Play Station code, same w/ xbox just in xbox code.
As well as par for the course goes I do expect a game I purchase to work, may need some work, but work.
And if they can't sell you something that works (within reasonable standards) then they shouldn't be selling it at all.
It may be a fact of life that some will cheat you, but I will never accept it as right.
To clarify so it's not misunderstood, I don't think Bethesda sets out to intentionally rip people off, but they did rush prematurely a product to market that wasn't ready and knew it, on all platforms.
Which I simply think is wrong and disrespectful to all of us.
Anyways thanks and good luck to you in life. Stay true to yourself !

Sorry Acolyte my reply is below, starting to pick up a little on forum writing. And thanks for your reply and trying to help but there is a lot to weigh to see it all. Hope you check and look for yourself and in your own good time answer if you want.
As far as broken goes we need to define. If broken to you means not working at all, then gamebryo is not broken. If broken means very problematic and prone to glitching, stutter, and all sorts of other problems, more so than the majority of game engines being used by professional game companies, then yes it's broken. I will ask you something, do you honestly think in the year 2010 that they should be releasing a game on an 11 year old engine patched many times by them and knowing all it's problems. This is not my opinion it is a known fact and if you want you can verify yourself. Point being they know this and have known for some time but it's fast and cheap to produce these types of games on, bottom line = makes more money-less cost, and they brag about that. My appeal to them is you can make more fans and more money w/ a better reputation by learning from the growing # problems they are encountering game after game, and it's just the right thing to do ! These games are to good to do further harm by ancient tech, more suited to checkers.
Too many people do have problems with these games on all platforms.

No problem, Layman ;)

There is one thing I do not udnerstand: How do you know so much about the game, when you label it as "unplayable" and put it in the list of games that you cannot play? You must have already put a decent amount of hours into Fallout New Vegas, since you have already been in New Vegas??

Another thing is that I believe you are overestimating the amount of people who are experiencing problems compared to people who are playing the game just fine. Unless you have some statistics of the percent of all sold games that are in the hands of PC players, who are experiencing serious problems, I could just as well claim that most people play this game fine, and it is only a very small minority of people who are experiencing problems.

However there aren't that many operating systems, and components all have to follow the rules for their particular systems,

I think there is something here you need to understand. There exists billions of different configurations out there that all have different ways of interacting with the game. That is why I say it is unrealistic to think that they will test each and every configuration. And if you think about it, this problem grows each and every day (ie. the number of different unique configurations grows).

I really like the "buggiest game this year/decade/ever" label. I think I have read that label to be put on each and every major game I have followed ever since the release of the first Splinter Cell game.

In this day and age, you should expect that each game released for PC needs some kind of tweaking from your side. That is just how the life is for us PC-gamers. If you don't like this, you might want to start playing Wii games - they are always flawless and without any bugs.

With regards to the game engine, I see no problem in them using it for new games also. I really do not care if the game engine is old or new, as long as the game (and the gameplay) is fun and as I said, I believe that most players do not experience problems with the Gamebryo engine. You say I can verify for myself that Bethesda/Obsidian know of all the problems with the engine - can you please point me in a direction where I can verify that?

Do you honestly believe that by developing a completely new and very advanced platform, that has never been out in "real life" testing would mean less bugs/problems??

But again - if you really want to play the game, I urge you to post your DXdiag in the support forum, and there might be someone there that can help you.

It really is time to let go of this dated engine. Just read up online for all the proof you need. This engine is notoriously buggy. This from someone who has always been able to play Morrowind, (Netimmerse then.) Oblivion, Fallout 3 and NV. Sure I had to tweak things and apply community fixes but they always work.....why? Because it's the same outdated, broken engine underneath.

Don't get me wrong, if the next TES/Fallout game is on this engine it will not stop me from buying the game, though I would be a little disappointed with their decision. (As in: "They should know better by now".)

I'd just love to see what they could do with these games on a modern well optimized engine. *Lights blown using imagination*

You could also see it from the bright side: By using the old engine the community very quickly find fixes to most engine related problems. :)

I agree with pretty much all of you posts...

But I keep asking myself this question:
Why is it that I can go to a store and buy any number of games,
install them on my PC, and play for 10-15 straight hours each time
I play them with only a very minor glitch here or there????

I've already finished both Dragon Age: Origins and Mass Effect 2,
which are a couple of my favorite games and I have had little to
no trouble playing them in all those hours of gameplay....???

With FONV it took me almost 2 hours just to install the game
because of all the problems with steam, then once I finally got the
game installed it wouldn't run at all and instantly CTD, finally
after troubleshooting for days I can now run the game with
only a rare CTD in which I lose progress and in which forces
me to CAD and end task...

Then I can reload and keep going... but I haven't got that
far in the game yet so I don't know if I'm going to be getting
the infamous "save game corruption" problems that others
are having and I've read about here in the forums...

Say what you will, but that's not a good track record for a
game I've only played a few hours and still have a long
way to go to finish...

Keep in mind, I can run these other games for a whole
day without a single problem... know what I mean???

just my 2.5 cents...
