Colonel Moore - why the hate?

Post » Sun Mar 06, 2011 3:52 am

Honestly, I really liked her.

She seemed to be the only person in the NCR with the exception of Colonel Hsu who had her head on straight. Sure, she hates the Brotherhood of Steel but (let's face it) the Brotherhood is flat out evil from the perspective of NCR and we can't look at these guys from the perspective of the Capital Wasteland. Frankly, Colonel Hsu couldn't see the fact that his investigator of the Legion spy was actually the spy himself.

Let's face it, when topped with a General like Oliver, her strategy of cutting away the Legion's support really comes off as sound.

Head on straight? Are you kidding? She's the most jingoistic of the bunch, surpassing even General Oliver. She epitomizes "Might Makes Right". The only plus she has over Oliver is that she's actually strategically competent.

Think: What is her reaction when you achieve nonviolent solutions to the tasks given to you by the NCR?

There's a place for attack dogs like Moore. A lot of the business she's involved in isn't it.

That's the issue, though. The nonviolent solutions are for the GREAT KHANS and the Brotherhood of Steel.

It's actually questionable whether those particular solutions are the most optimal.

Howso? The NCR gets aid in the form of troops with laser weapons and true power armor, or extra cannon fodder from the Khans, or simply have the Khans out of the way entirely. Not having them available for the Dam Battle is less than optimal. Furthermore, if the NCR wins, they get an extra hand in patrolling the Mojave from the Bros.

And if you manage a diplomatic solution dealing with the Kings aside from expending The King's favor to you, Moore sees to it that Crocker gets sacked.

Moore is a prime example of Maslow's Hammer.

Well the Khans are a collection of drug dealers and raiders.

While "peace" is great, I'm reminded (of all things) the Bioware game Mass Effect.

You can make a peace treaty with a psychotic drug dealing warlord.... or you can just shoot him.

Edit:

I basically had the same feeling on the Omerta quest. You can kill Big Sal and Nero *OR* you can let them kill Cachnino and then kill them both.

I feel this is a bit shortsighted. While the immediate benefits for the NCR regarding the Battle of Hoover Dam include assistance from another faction against a common enemy, the Legion, the BoS are a liability in the long term. If the NCR's goal is to control NV as either a province or vassal, by annexation or consent, having a band of heavily armed and armored fundamentalists running around trying to apply their own brand of justice to the Mojave (usually contrary to NCR's) would be a severe hinderance. Consider also that the BoS would be directly, and perhaps actively, oppposed to the NCR using technology to improve conditions in the Mojave for all ranging from energy weapons all the way up to Helios One.

And as for the Great Khans, as someone stated above, they're drug peddling brutal thugs. Sure, extra bodies to absorb Legion bullets during the battle for the Dam, but when the dust settles and the Legion is running east, where does that leave them? Looting, pillaging, selling drugs to its citizens and who knows what else. Again, a liability and a road block to the governance and stability of the Mojave

There's also the issue that the BOS seems to think this is a temporary truce rather than a legitimate surrender agreement.

Because she's rude, therefore most people don't liker her ; God-forbid the women in charge of holding Hoover Damn be a little antsy. I've seen people say the same about the BoS, "They put a slave collar on me so I [censored] them up." Stuff like that has been posted.

She's just a no-nononse women who puts the NCR above everything else, I agree Charlamange, the BoS and NCR have a temporary truce only specific to that region, and how long is it going to take for the nutcases like those who kill the Followers during 'If I could make you care' to break that truce.

No, she's a bloodthirsty, uncompromising [censored].
Her approach to problems is shoot first, ask questions later.

While I can somewhat understand her distrust of the Khans or the Brotherhood, I still find her preferred way of dealing with them to be brutal and stupid.
She doesn't even consider non-violent solutions before you suggest them to her and even then only grudgingly accepts.

Another example is Mr. House. You can keep him alive (at least temporarily) but regardless of all his knowledge and the opportunity it may present to mankind, if you tell her you left him alive, she says that she will send someone to deal with him (kill him).

To me she represents (together with the corrupt bureaucrats) the worst side of the NCR: the cold and menacing bully.

That Cassandra Moore is a woman is incidental to the other reasons I can't stand her. So don't play the sixism card.

What's wrong with non-compromising? She's a Colonel, she's served a long time and some, admittedly very effective, mercenary comes in and starts telling her how to run the show.

Why? One is a tribe which has plauged the NCR since before it even was the NCR and the Brotherhood are a tribe of very powerful people whom they are at war with whilst simultaniously being at war with someone else; why should she think that a ceasefire between them is possible?

Why would he tell you any of this 'knowledge' when, by taking him out of his chamber and disabling his control, you've effectively killed him, he even says he wants to die. What knowledge could he verbally offer you anyway?

To me she represents (together with the corrupt bureaucrats) the worst side of the NCR: the cold and menacing bully.

Sometimes you just can't [censored] around, sure signing peace treaties is nice but the NCR, at it's core, is not a nice government. It's an imperialist government which, even since Fallout 2 - when the need to play up how they might be inconpetant at times never existed - they have been trying to annex stuff and, if they refuse often, they play dirty. Vault City had prime medical tech, they wouldn't be annexed, so the NCR sub-contracted the most powerful crimeboss in New Reno to hire mercs, to pose as raiders, to then bully Vault City (population 103) into annexation for saftey; based on Cass's comment of "Vault City pacifists" we can only assumed that the dirty bastards succeeded. Hell you can even turn the NCR into a fascist superstate, which even accepts Enclave refugees, if you simply assassinate a high ranking offical.

It has nothing to do with the dislike of the Brotherhood, I don't care about them, it's the way she goes about it. "I want you to go to point A and kill that group."

Look at the Khans, if you convince them to break their ties with Caesar and leave north, they start working with the followers in Minnesota.

Yeah,

Colonel Moore is probably only following her orders. The Great Khans are a military target since they're allies of Caesar's Legion and a legitimate foe to be reckoned with by NCR.

The Brotherhood is at war with NCR.

The Boomers and Kings are dealt with by the Ambassadors.

The Khans were allied with the Legion because Caesar is a snake and promised them something that counters Caesars 'Conquer, Control' attitude. When you talk sense into the Khans they seemingly retire from their 'bad guy' role, which, at this point the series, they aren't bad so much as trying to carve out their own home.

I personally liked the Great Khans and thinking about what the NCR would do to them after Hoover Dam I convinced them to leave the Mojave and since then they carved out their own civilization up north with the Followers of the Apocolypse

Yet they seem to depend on him ;)
My problem with her mindset is that it seems stupid to insist on a given opinion no matter what new facts or possibilities may arise. Especially if it may help to prevent bloodshed and misery.
Both Khans and BOS show signs of understanding that the days when they could afford a war with the NCR are long gone.

Why? One is a tribe which has plauged the NCR since before it even was the NCR and the Brotherhood are a tribe of very powerful people whom they are at war with whilst simultaniously being at war with someone else; why should she think that a ceasefire between them is possible?

Another reason to form a ceasefire (or better yet, gain an ally), so as not to split your forces.

Why would he tell you any of this 'knowledge' when, by taking him out of his chamber and disabling his control, you've effectively killed him, he even says he wants to die. What knowledge could he verbally offer you anyway?

So if someone is already lying on the ground all the better to kick him some more? It's not even putting him out of his misery as an act of compassion, it's just murder.

What you say only underlines my assessment of Col. Moore. I'm not saying that it's incomprehensible why she is behaving that way. But if she is acting like a total jerk, why should I like her?

I enjoy Col. Moore allot more after poking her in the eye. The fact the Khans catch a break (for once), or the BoS being allowed to live abit longer, has little to do with it.

The only reason I don't like her is that when I got back from the BOS hideout, she was quite angry when I told her about the Treaty from the Brotherhood and all they wanted back in the end was the salvaged power armors that the NCR took from any fallen Brotherhood members. Damn, cut me some slack. :sadvaultboy:

*Sits down in tent at ranger outpost and takes off helmet* Ah yes Colonel Moore, i've dealt with her directly a few times and I have to tell you, I think she's one of the few higher ups in the NCR that actually has her head on straight. A lot of people on here are blaming her for being to "jingoistic", big words ftw by the way, when all she's doing is her job which is to hold the front line against the Legion.

People try to bring up destroying the Brotherhood as a example, but maybe you all forgot that even though they might could be convinced to agree to a cease fire until the war is over, but what happens after that? For all we know they'll break the treaty and start another war that will cost who knows how many soldiers lives.

And the Khans? Drug dealers who have a history of doing nothing but causing trouble. As soon as Moore saw the opportunity to have a outside source take them out without risking the lives of anyone in the NCR, she took it.

In the end Moore may be a hard ass, but she does it with a purpose. And at the end of the day thats exactly what she's supposed to do. Now if you all will excuse me, I have to go out on patrol.

I actually think she's kinda sixy. I love me some strong women.

PS: Having had the pleasure to serve in a nation's military, both under and in charge of some very "jingoistic" folks, I would have to say, condidering the mission of "kill the other guys", that those are exactly the kind of people I want to share a fighting hole with.

i think the dislike mainly stems from her dialogue....even when you fulfill your missions, she is still very rough and unappreciative.

the great khans are not only allied with the legion, but are the main supplier to the fiends. add in the years of problems the GK's have caused, there's no reason to call a treaty with them in their (the GK's) weakened state. it is the perfect opportunity to wipe out an enemy. a treaty with the GK's only serves the courier's purposes, not the ncr's.

looking forward....if you make a treaty with the khans, while pursuing an ncr ending, the ncr will eventually spread to the khans new location. will it be peaceful then? or will another war start between the khans and ncr?

pretty much the same applies to the bos. it is even more crucial to take out the bos because of their equipment and training. when your enemy is weak you do not make a treaty, you finish them off.

moore is a good and competent leader taking advantage of the situation. i don't like her personality, but i agree with her methods.

General Oliver or Colonel Moore.

In terms of the Dam's defense.
