Combat is better in third person

Post » Thu Jun 07, 2012 8:31 am

When fighting in third person, it is so much easier to get a feel for depth and therefore much easier to dodge attacks coming from any angle. Anyone else switch to third person for combat??

I am never not in 3rd person... but that's just how I like to play.

3rd person does make it easier to keep my followers alive and when fighting gangs for local charities and stuff

not for me. i guess i'm just so used to playing fps, but i get turned around to easily and my depth perception is off when attacking in 3rd person. i travel and explore in 3rd person and fight in 1st.

I prefer 1st person when fighting & talking to NPC's.

The Only time i use 3rd person is when walking in the wilderness travelling from A to B , checking out what my character looks like initialy after creation & checking out how outfits/gear look.

Third person is cool for melee, but I do terribly with it when using ranged attacks.

I always play in 1st person. It's probably just because I'm not used to it, but I find it harder to judge things and the camera seems awkward to me.

I was surprised to see the melee animations look much better in third person. I usually switch to first person for using a bow or sometimes to better aim Unrelenting Force at a distant target on a bridge, for example.

I have also noticed a slight frame rate improvement in third person in some areas.

3rd person is the only way I play. I've tried 1st person occasionally but it only lasts a few minutes. 1st person just feels clunky to me.

3rd person for melee, 1st person for ranged.

1st person svcks for melee, you get better positional awareness in 3rd person: it's easier possible to spot an opponent trying to flank you, you get a better idea of your character's reach, with the wider view it's easier to see possible avenues of retreat, the attack animations look better, etc. For ranged it's a different matter, the reticle isn't in quite the right place when you're zoomed out and your avatar can block your view, so 1st person is better for archery.

I agree about melee combat being optimal in 3rd person, however I use the bow/spells in 1st person (for the same reason)

3rd person melee, just offers so much more variation (movement and animation) and battlefield control, the 1st person melee mode is downright clumsy IMO.

It's great to be able to switch back and forth easily, and even zoom out quite far in third person.

Not many games allow you to do this. I find myself trying to adjust the camera position in other games after having grown accustomed to this with TES.

Regardless of any tactical advantage I might have in 3rd person, I always play in 1st because I like the visceral reality of it.

Although I prefer 3rd person over 1st in any game, I find that when doing anything involving sneaking I use 1st and enjoy it.

Always 1st person. No camera tricks to see things I'm not supposed to see. I only switch to 3rd person for a moment to look myself on the mirror (ex: sitting at the inn, walking on a path to check how the char looks, etc.).

I like to look down at the steps while I go downstairs, look around while walking when traveling from a city to another, look down at cliff edges, and on combat mode I rely on the 5.1 sound to know where the enemies are, so I have no problem there.

I can also hear my footsteps while I walk, something I love, specially while walking on dirt or snow. It makes the long travels (which can be up to 60 minutes sometimes) more pleasurable.

This. I tried to fight in 3rd person but found myself facing the wrong way and attacking the wrong things; like book shelves and trees, and guards.

Its better than oblivions 3rd person range combat thats for sure, but you have aim slightly to the left because of the over the shoulder cam.

urg 3rd person combat in this game is horrible for me - I generally only use it when strolling about or taking some vanity shots of my character : P

3rd person for melee definitely and 1st for ranged (spells/bow). I'm playing a dual-wield character at the moment and playing in 3rd just gives me a whole new perspective. If you play in 1st you won't see the beauty of your weapon swings and different power attacks :) When it comes to melee there's only one type of character i play in 1st person and that is a warrior with sword and shield. I prefer to block in 1st simply because for me i can block and bash with more precision.
