Computer black screening.

Check your hardware people.

I bought Skyrim on release day as well, and after 5-15 minutes it would always blackscreen, hard-reset needed. I was convinced it wasn't my hardware or setup, tried every fix I heard of, etc.

Today, I had enough. I decided to go out and buy different hardware if this didn't work. nVidia Inspector showed my darned high GPU temperature levels when playing Skyrim. I never had that problem before!

So, I took the entire PC apart, put the video card in a better position, made sure my airflow was good (switched some fans around, enabled a fan I usually had disabled). I also removed a SoundBlaster Audigy 2 ZS card that was interfering with the airflow, and am now using the onboard audio instead.

So I try Skyrim again. Now temperatures stay a lot lower and guess what - no more black screening.

I have it running at ultra settings, everything except shadows (set to low) maxed out. That includes AA, AF and FXAA. With my hardware, I'm impressed the game hasn't dropped under 30 FPS yet, usually around 40. Average GPU load 85%, CPU load 25%.

Intel Core i7 920
NVidia GeForce 260GTX (Asus)

Running with 4GB patch and ENB drivers, 1920x1200.

Let's see how long it takes before I get the CTD issue now that the black screen issue is solved for me :D

(BTW I'm not saying this is everybody who is blackscreening's problem.... but if you haven't thoroughly checked all your hardware and temperatures while running Skyrim... do so)

+1... i'm really tired of ranting about this... but i'll do it one last time. Radeon 5880... worked like a charm for 10 hours on release day... next day when i started my computer again and the game... first hard crash after 30 minutes... and the game kept hard crashing with this skreetcy sound loop. Only happens when my character is outdoors... so i thought it was something to do with the draw distance... i lowered those and set general graphic settings to low (yuck) and actually could play another 25 hours without hard crash... then suddenly a bright autum morning... starting up the game again and it started hard crashing on me again... on low settings, next to no draw distance and sound set to 44.1khz 16bit.

Now i know my rig is good... i can play everything else these days on high or ultra settings... i know my computer doesn't get to hot since i and lots of others here on the forum with the same issue have monitored temperatures. it has to do with the game.

My theories are the work load balance between GPU and CPU...

...and/or...

...something to do with the draw distance (which bethesda developers braged about before the relsease).

My biggest scare is that this issue will be forgotten in the coming patch due to threads about this topic getting drowned in CTD (crash to desktop) posts and then our issue seems like the lesser one... which i would have to say it's not, i'd take a CTD over a HC anyday. Keep bumping threads about this isse so it's not forgotten.

Maybe the CTD issues and the HC issues are different aspects of the same issue... but i don't think so.

I'm getting this - card is a Nvidia 9600GS. Game chooses medium settings but I have been running it on low because of this issue. Black screen, PC locking up and going "durrrrrrrrrrrrrr" and needing to be powered down at the button. Additional problem for me is that my PC has a quirk where if you shut it down you have to unplug it and wait about 45 minutes before it will power up again. So I am losing a lot of game time because of this.

Everything else on my PC exceeds the reccomended specs. Card is the weak point I know but it should still comfortably run on low or medium settings without this happening. I have turned down the sound device drivers, the graphics drivers themselves are up to date.

It can happen after 10 minutes or 3 hours. Often seems to occur during a big fight where magic is used by the NPCs or in a big dragon fight.

I've been playing and rebooting this game for a week now. And I'm getting fed up with these crashes. My system is fast enough (i5, 8GB, 6950) to run this game, yet it keeps crashing. Since I love this game, I keep on trying, so I might as well post some of my experiences here in the hope other people recognize it. When it crashes the screen goes black, monitor says it doesn't have a signal and after a couple of seconds sound craps out and all I can do is reboot the system.

-Game settings are autodetected and set to Ultra-high.
-Fastest black screen is within 2 seconds of loading my savegame.
-Windowed, low resolution, low settings don't seem to fix anything.
-System drivers (directx, motherboard, ati, sound) are ALL up to date.

Please Bethesda fix this. Love your work though.

Same problem. I don't know how it got shipped with that gaping game breaking and possibly system breaking bug. And 10 days later not even a hotfix or anything to hold us over. I've tried everything and nothing works.

Black screens of death on AMD/ATI cards is caused by the Powersaving option that throttles the CPU of the card.

Why not all cards have this problem is unknown. Could be a fabrication error or something simmilar.

Problem is... How to fix it?

Solution is pretty damned hard if you just bought the card might check the warranty options and get in contact with the reseller and explain the problem.

Why is this solution hard?
It requires you to uninstall CCC, install a overclocking utility and overclock or downlock the CPU of the graphic card.
If you want to be sure before you try this, just uninstall CCC and look if the problem persists.

I had the same problems on my old HD4890 still using it. CPU was set to 870 on default but I clocked it down to 840. Never had any crashes. Installed CCC BOOM. crashed again. Uninstalled CCC and applied the overlock, 0 crashes again.

just my 2 cents

I have the HD 6950, and had the same issue.. It appears underclocking the GPU from 840 down to 700 has almost totally solved the Black screening for me, though it does still happen. Combine that with the LAA fix and this becomes semi-playable.

I have the same issue. I can only play on low graphics setting. The game detects high settings though.

Its seems a very random problem as it black screens when it feels like it. It then needs a hard reset, which can damage data. I then need to go through the Windows recovery procedure.

Windows 7 64.

Intel i5 750 2.67 ghz quad core processor.

ATI HD 57** series.

2 X 2 GB RAM.

This very is frustrating, I hope this gets fixed soon.

With ATI/AMD GPUs, one thing I have found is to have a youtube video open while playing Skyrim helps incredibly. You don't need to have it constantly playing, just play the first few seconds and then pause and launch game. For some reason this somehow activates the higher settings on the card. Works on my 5650 HD and my brother's 67** HD.

Hope this helps.

I've seen a lot of people having the same issues as me, their computer black screens, audio hangs and then you have to hard reset the computer (Which is baaad). The only "tweaks" I've found to sort of fix this is to turn AA off, run with a really bad resolution (some people even state 800x600!...).

The one thing I don't get, how come I was able to play this game for six hours with no issues, but now after 30 minutes of play I black screen... This is ridiculous. If anyone else can shed light, that would be fab.

I downloaded NVIDIA Tools, with which I can let the fan on the graphics card run at 100% during the game. That does postpone the crash several hours. I believe the problem is dat the graphics card is not strong enough, gets way too hot and shuts off. Eventually I should buy a new graphics card. My card is an Nvidia 9600 GS I believe, 2-3 years old already.

No it's not your card it's the game cause i have hd 6770 and have the same problem...the only solution for me is to underclock my cark from catalyst and put the fan to 80-100% but i don't want to destroy my gpu

I am having the same problem. One thing I noticed is that it always seems to crash in Snapleg Cave by the spiders. If anyone is feeling daring try going to Snapleg Cave. If it crashes there all the time for everybody that might be a hint as to what is causing it. My card is a Radeon HD 6800 series not sure on the exact number.

Hi again. I think i maybe found a solution. An user on a other Skyrim-forum tipped me about lowering the memory frequency on the graphic card, and it seems like it works. I have played around 3-4 hours so far with no artifacts, blinking or black screen of death. I don't want to say it's 100% solution until i've tried at least 10 hours or more. Apparently there was batches of 58xx/68xx AMD/ATi-graphic cards that had bad memory chips which is only noticed in some games.

I have Radeon 5850 and i lowered the memory frequency with MSI Afterburner (could probably be done with AMD OverDrive also) from 1125 MHz to 950 MHz. Before i had very bad artifacts, strange colors, the whole screen was blinking, very bright white world and so forth, and after i lowered the memory frequency, i got none of that.

Could someone please test this and see if it is a complete solution to the black screen of death-problem?

I have that card too - I don't think it is overheating at all as the crash can happen after 3 minutes of having the PC switched on or 3 hours. I suspect a driver crash but what triggers it is another matter.

I have played 15+ hours more with no black screen of death, artifacts or strange textures with the memory frequency of the graphic card lowered. It has totally solved my problems with Skyrim, and it's nice to be able to play!

Should apply to everyone with AMD Radeon 58xx/68xx cards that has black screen of death problems.

I have the ati hd 6770 and i underclocked the memory clock from 1200 to 1000 mhz with msi afterburner and i play now four days without bsod...Before this every time i opened the map boom black screen...I don't have any other problems with games i am running fine battlefield 3, saints row 3, assasins creed revelations...This bsod problem happens only in skyrim i don't know why

Happens to me too. I've read somewhere that playing in windowed mode is supposed to solve it, but it doesn't work for me.

My graphics card is an ATI Radeon 4890 with 11.11b drivers. I've also noticed that it happens inside ice caves. Also I have been playing for a while and I don't remember this happening on my earlier saves... maybe it's because I updated the drivers recently? It's definitively not a temperatures problem, hardware and cooling should always be speced to handle full load. I'm suspecting drivers. I'll try the lower memory clock fix...

Hey, running a HD6870 his iceQ too, i had black screen of the death (as they were labeled :<), tried a lot of stuff, nothing worked, the only thing that helped me a bit, is to downclock to factory frequencies (the HD6870 HIS iceQ is overclocked out of factory), i have less crashes (still too many for a non online game imo), and the crashes are actually different, no more black screen, instead the game just freezes (it happens kinda ofter just after a loading actually i noticed.... oh well), but at least, i can ctrl+alt+del and end the process (just in case you do the same thing as i did, and have black screens turning into freezes, end directly the process TESV.exe from "all process" so it will shut down immediately, if you right click "end the process" it will tell you that its not responding and it will likely never close :>), so it doesnt hurt my rig, and i can reboot the game right away.

But let me be clear, it's better than black screens, but it's still unacceptable to crash that often on a non-online game, maybe i'm a little harsh, and i know it's not easy for them to fix everything, but the fact that there is absolutely no communication from bethesda about these crashes (and i don't think we're only 4 or 5 to have this issue) is really, really annoying.

By the way, for those having a HD6870 HIS iceQ read what follows :

There were some cards (made in june as i read, but it was on a french forum, dunno if this is only about france or not, telling it anyway) that had a problem (was the serie HD1106xxxxxx from what i read on the forum, again, it was on a french forum, i dunno how HIS works, if the series are the same for the entire europe, or per country, just sayin'), when stressed out with a high pressure like recent games do, or even a stress test like furmark, they just crash, often with black screens.

SO if you have this very graphic card, then download furmark, and stress it for 1 or 2 hours, if you hadn't any crash/artefact during this test, then you should be fine (and then the crash isnt about your GFX), really try it, so you'll be sure.

Don't forget to monitor your temperatures too, always good to remind people about that.

As everyone i still wait for fix from bethesda or AMD, and i hope it will be out soon, for the time being, i save A LOT (320 saves in 35 hours of game), pray everytime i launch the game, and sacrifice goats.

EDIT : oh yeah and sorry for the english blah blah... not birth language blah blah...

Black screens are usually related to GPU overheating issues. I found the stock van settings for AMD/ATI cards to be somewhat lacking and focusing mainly on noise level instead of system stability. I don't want to cook my card thank you very much ATI! I fixed the trouble with black screens I had a long time ago with Neverwinter Nights 2 by manually setting fan speeds with MSI Afterburner.

Those above are the fan speed settings I use with my overclocked HD 5850.

had this happen once on my 6970 as I was talking to the Nord that gives quests at the Stormcloak Camps for the civil war questline...as I was reporting into him at a new camp the game went to black screen sound remained I left it for a bit no change couldn't get ctrl alt del to respond so had to press my power button and like the OP said I really hate having to do that. This was pre patch 1.3 for me and pre 12.1 catalyst preview which had optimizes for my line of card. I also use MSI afterburner as my card stock likes to just stay at 25% speed all the time which is ridiculous so that may help you guys and it supports most ATI cards and they don't have to be MSI brand. This crash corrupted my saves for my first character and I had to start over after a reinstall as well definately a very serious issue.
