Computer black screening.

Post » Wed May 30, 2012 9:48 pm

I've seen a lot of people having the same issues as me, their computer black screens, audio hangs and then you have to hard reset the computer (Which is baaad). The only "tweaks" I've found to sort of fix this is to turn AA off, run with a really bad resolution (some people even state 800x600!...).

The one thing I don't get, how come I was able to play this game for six hours with no issues, but now after 30 minutes of play I black screen... This is ridiculous. If anyone else can shed light, that would be fab.

I have a similar issue where my screen freezes for between 2-4 seconds and then the game comes back with 50 less FPS (average). People are having similar problems on SC2 where the paged pool memory runs out, they get about the same results that you and I are getting.

There's a good question, if your having this issue, post what gcard your using, if not still post anyway, why like to see if this is only happening with ATI.

I'm using a 5750 1GB

I have posted a similar thread in both the Steam and this forum, and am experiencing the same problem. Post your system specs so we can compare, but it seems to be AMD radeon cards, I've found several that have a radeon 6870 GPU, which is a common link with mine. Very annoying, as I am going through dragon withdrawal, but we should probably submit DxDiag reports to Bethesda so they have more data to work with to fix the problem. Getting this in a patch would be great.

System Specs
AMD phenom 6core 3.3G
radeon 6870 GPU 1G RAM
8G RAM
Windows 7 64 bit

AMD Phenom 9750 Quad-Core ~2.4GHz
ATI Radeon HD 4600
8GB RAM
Windows 7 64bit

Low-end, high-end, it seems as if all graphics cards can have this problem.

You can post a dxDIAG report here;

http://www.gamesas.com/index.php?/topic/1263928-bethesda-wants-our-dxdiag-for-the-upcoming-patch/page__st__180__p__19211188__fromsearch__1#entry19211188

Just trying to see if this is an issue with only radeon cards, which I'm starting to think it is. Still pretty weird that I can be playing it with no lagg, but then "bang" black screens, no warning or anything.

There have actually been a lot of threads talking about how the longer they play, the worse the game gets. Starts great, strange errors start popping up, and it gets worse rather quickly.

Make sure to post your dxdiag.txt, but remember to surround it with the spoiler tags: [ spoiler ] text [ / spoiler ]

Just remove the spaces, so it should look like this (without bombarding everybody with crap loads of text):

Spoiler

I am sure we will hear something today once there days starts or in the midst of their day on what there intentions are. I doubt they did anything on the weekend. It was a 3 day weekend for most people.

Happening to me too. Not sure of my exact card, I know it's a 6800HD series.
Bump this up. They need to fix this so I don't feel like I wasted $150. :(

Remember to post your dxdiag info here as well;

http://www.gamesas.com/index.php?/topic/1263928-bethesda-wants-our-dxdiag-for-the-upcoming-patch/

4PM in the UK, still nothing.

Do they even test the game after release? - This annoys me, paying for a game i can put to rest while they "Fix" it...

This might be useful, I'm testing it out now, hope it fixes it!

dxdiag will only list the version of directx that the system is actually running.
newer versions of directx run older versions as conversion systems only! they only require the directx 9 files etc to allow playing within the framework of directx 11 etc
it is worth updating your directx 9 files but i think you will find the wbe installer will say you already have a newer version installed.
what i would suggest is you default the Catalyst Control centre for your ATI card.
alot of problem are being caused by some crappy settings in the ATI drivers. goto prefernces and RESTORE FACTORY DEFAULTS in your video drivers and test.

there are numerous people playing the game in windows 7 with no "crashing" issues above what you might normally expect from a Bethesda game...so blaming windows 7 isnt the way.

if you still cant get it playing nice then create a new user account and test in that user. again this has resolved other peoples issues by setting everything possible to defaults.

finally make sure your sound device is set beneath the 96000khz threshhold..in most cases dropping to 41000 resoilves the issues. Control panel>sounds> right click the first device in the list>properties>advanced then choose 41000 from the drop down menu. and test

Also, add this to a launch option;

-dx9

Must have the -
It might improve stability?

Tell me the results!

EDIT:
Able to play for an hour with no issues

Exact same issue.. I'm running a 6870 video card. I've done about 7 hours of troubleshooting on the issue. I'm out of stuff to try and am waiting on either a patch or a driver update. I think I may have found a place with the leaked upcoming ATI driver. I'm going to try that tonight.

Exact same problem with me. 6870 video card as well. Worked for a bit (made it through the first dungeon) but now I can't get more than 2 - 3 minutes in game before the screen goes black and I have to hard-reboot the computer. The game is so beautiful I just want to get in there and explore; so frustrating.

I'll post a dxdiag when I have a chance.
