Crash to black screen

Post » Mon May 28, 2012 6:53 pm

Hello.
I just got Skyrim on steam, and it's crashing a lot. Everytime I try to play the game it crashes after a few minutes to a black screen and the audio loops in a glitchy way. When this happens all I can do is to turn off the machine and try again. I running it on 64-bit windows 7 and I have an ATI Mobily Radeon HD 4650 video card.
Does anyone happen to know of a solution for this?

Actually, since you chose to be so very stingy with information, other than WAGs, there's not much to offer before you expand the information enough to attempt some diagnostic steps.

http://www.gamesas.com/topic/1316509-unofficial-will-my-pc-run-skyrim-thread-56-w-hardware-guide/

Corrected Skyrim Minimum Requirements

* Windows 7/Vista/XP PC (32 or 64 bit)
* Processor: Dual Core 2.3 GHz C2D or equivalent CPU
* 2GB System RAM
* 6GB free HDD Space
* Direct X 9 compliant video card with 512 MB of RAM (and
sufficient performance to actually put that VRAM to use)

* DirectX compatible sound card
* Internet access for Steam activation

Nothing to add, is a common problem of the game.
He just told you what SO is running and vga, he download the game recently for steam so he have the 1.3.1 ver of the game, what else does he have to say?Even if he does there is nothing to do to fix the problem, or is it?

If you knew what you thought you knew, there would be no need of any information at all. Since you do not, you have totally missed the PRIMARY CAUSE of a sudden cessation of video, while the audio continues.

That bug is there since they release the game...
Game freeze the sounds start to loop, monitor button goes yellow and then you have to restart your pc.
Ask bethesda for a solution and they will tell you from send them a dxdiag to change some sound config in your pc, etc etc, nothing works.
I'm not trying to argue with you but this is what happens and there is not a fix at all bethesda is just looking for somewhere else...

Hello Gaston,

Click the "Advanced" Tab. Under "Default Format", change it to 44.1 Khz (44100) and 16 bit (CD quality.)

Choose OK and try to launch Skyrim again.

Hello, thanks for the answer. I did that with the sound and the problem is still there, freeze and then I have to hard reset my pc.
I try with a lots of drivers versions, under-clock my vga clocks but the problem persist I just don't know what to do anymore, if I keep reseting my pc it will eventually break or something

The monitor goes black and the light turns yellow like if I turn it off, then (sometimes not always) the sounds starts to loop and freeze. This is what always happen.

I hope it helps and you can fix this as soon as possible.I attach my dxdiag file.

Thanks in advance.

Hello Gaston,

Please try the steps below to see if they fix the problem you are experiencing:

1. If you are experiencing performance issues in the game, reset the video options to what the TESV Launcher has auto-detected. This can be done by selecting “Options” from the Launcher and clicking the “Default” button in the “Detail” section. Additionally, lowering or disabling the following settings may improve performance globally or in game areas where performance issues are noted:

· Turn Anti-Aliasing and/or Anisotropic Filtering down or off. This may degrade overall visual quality but will improve framerate.

· Lower the game resolution. The title will run faster at smaller resolutions.

2. Additionally, the you may want to make sure you aren’t running any other programs in the background. It is strongly recommended to turn off all background applications when running graphically intensive programs. Many applications can cause errors such as GPFs, color scrambling, loss of sound effects or music, etc. Taking a minute to turn off these applications can save you the trouble of rebooting later. Background applications include such things as System Agent, Norton Utilities, Internet chat utilities, virus checkers and screen savers. Crash guard programs such as First Aid for Windows can also cause problems.

1. Click on the Windows icon in the lower left corner of the screen.
2. Click on Start Search
3. Type in msconfig and press the Enter key on your keyboard.
4. Click the Continue button if the message "Windows needs your permission to continue" appears. If this message does not appear, please continue to step 5.
5. On the General Tab, choose Selective Startup.
6. Uncheck the option to Load startup items.
7. Click Apply, then Ok, and restart the system when prompted.

Best Regards,
Ivan S.

Try all that and keep doing the same thing :(
low the res low the graphics uncheck start up items, change the sound but nothing.
After i restart my pc i got this always:

Firma con problemas:

When Skyrim crashes its always directly back to the desktop without so much as an error message. Meanwhile when hardware crashes...you get what you're getting. Classic video card/driver fail.

The hardware crash because of the game, this is the only game that make my system crash, i didn't have any hang or freeze in my pc since i install windows. So no hardware issue is a game issue.

Then what you were doing with your computer before Skyrim was weak and not really using your cards. Besides, its the video driver's job to make sure this doesn't happen and clearly its failing to do its job or you've got it setup to fail.

I played The witcher 2 all max settings, crysis 2 (with the patch dx11 and high textures) all maxed, dead island, dead space 2, pro evolution soccer 12, fifa 2012, stalker call of prypiat,amnesia the dark descent.batman arkam city, assasin creed revelation are one of the few games ive played recently.
Oh and i test my cpu with orthos 95 and prime, my mems with memtest for 1day and my vga with fumark, no artifacs glitch freeze or nothing at all, So I'm pretty sure is not a pc related issue :smile:

Stalker is the only one in that list that gives even a 200$ card more then a yawning pause. Again: Its your video card's driver's job to make sure that the system doesn't hang due to demands from a game being sent to the video card. Its not doing its job.

This is what I think as well. Clean out drivers and install new ones and hope it's just software, but it's quite likely hardware failure. Mobile chips are not good for gaming - you can try cooling/underclocking to see if that helps.

Lol all try to insist in the same thing when clearly is not a hardware problem, is like talking to a wall or bethesda in any case...
Now suggest to underclock the vga ?So you advice someone (that may or may not know what is an uderclock) to do something that can damage their pc/vga...
Good luck mathmos_ but like you see no one accept the fact that the game is bugged like hell and there is not solution for it at the time.

So you are saying that skyrim is more demandant that any of those games?Dont make me laugh

Ouch those drivers are really old. Try updating graphics drivers from http://support.amd.com/us/gpudownload/Pages/index.aspx and check HP and realtek for latest audio etc. drivers.

If that doesn't work try and get better cooling as it could be overheating (Skyrim puts a very unique load on the PC, different to other games/stress tests)

Thanks, but whenever I try to run the installation for Catalyst Mobility, it says that it can't run due to software/hardware incompatability, which doesn't make much sense. Is there some way of get the driver and instaling it without Catalyst Mobility?

Hmm I've heard of driver blacklisting which could be the issue. Ideally HP want you to go to HP to get the drivers then - do so if you can. Otherwise this guide might help:

Well, it's a Sony and their latest driver is from 2009, but thanks. It looks promising.

Run over to Omega Drivers and get whatever Radeon drivers he has ready. The place is free, but he asks for donations to cover expenses.

They are great drivers, and are really just AMD's own, but with the internal blacklisting removed.

Well, the problem persists. I managed to get the graphics driver updated, so that I now have version 8.920.0.0 (10-11-2011), and I tried out the ANTIFREEZE thing, but neither helped much. Any other ideas?

Just to rule out everything else......Do a "Clean Boot" <<,google that...find the info at microsoft...Boot clean, and see if the game plays.

Anything can interfere with the game or your drivers. A black screen (to me) is screaming one of two things...Heat or Power. As the lack of power will cause more heat they can be one in the same. The black screen that everyone seams to blame on the game (really its not the Game!) is more then likely a BLUE screen, you just cant SEE it. The monitor losing signal (black/blank screen) can be your Driver crashing and windows not recovering.

I experienced all this first hand with Oblivion. It turned out it was my power supply. Not the Drivers or the Game.
