Creating NEW animations?

Post » Mon Jun 18, 2012 5:51 am

Pasting this post I came across from another site. In hunting for ways to create new and original animations for Skyrim (I've found nothing) I ran across this post.

Bad news, guys. There won't be any animation mod with plenty new animations in the near future. Whatever new animation you see, it's a modification of an existing file of the game, and REPLACES that animation.

The problem is that Havok (the new animation engine) anims are much more complicated than the old Gamebryo/NIF format. And although two third of their tools are publicly available, one third (Behavior) is not. And even if you "find" a version, Bethesda has not released the files necessary to feed this tool. (hkx behavior files are only a stripped version of what you would need to modify).

So unless a highly intelligent programmer finds a way to hack those behavior files (and possibly implements an idle manager on top of that, so different animations mods won't be automatically incompatible with one another), there will be no new animations. At least in a way that the rest of Skyrim will work as before.

Seriously? So it's impossible at present to create new animations? Our only option at the moment is to simply tweak existing ones? What kind of crap is that?

That puts my limping on low health mod in the trash. lol

I find it hard to believe that Bethesda would make the addition of new and original animations so difficult to implement. Please tell me this isn't true.

Great, guess I made these for nothing then, thanks Bethesda.

Least Valve had the courtesy to provide both tools and documentation on making more than houses and pokey stabby things when they released Source.

This is unbelievable then.

The inability to create new animations is a major, near fatal blow to Skyrim modding. No new monsters, no NPCs, no custom characters. Can forget about combat overhauls ala Deadly Reflex etc.

Also kills some of the better wip immersion and roleplay mods. Would ben ice to hear from Bethesda on the subject (LOL) I mean, what, did they just completely forget about this or something?

Oh damn. I was hoping for a modder to add Fatal Frame type ghosts to the game, can't happen without new animations. Way to go Bethesda :wallbash:

This makes it even more important that all the animation files from the GameJam thing at the very least are released. I don't really mind if it's unplayable, if we have the files we can make our own playable versions later down the line (hopefully) and balance things ourselves.

Your original quoter was kinda right and mostly wrong at the same time...

1) Behavior -> We are not getting it from Havok or Bethesda and even if we did get it from Havok it would not help one bit with Skyrim, but not for the reason quoted.
2) Animations -> HCT is available as is HKXCMD for converting hkxs to kfs and back.
3) New Actors -> you can make them but your confined to using Bethesda's Behavior Graphs -> Incomplete http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Cisn0z5KxqM, I have several new actors in game but this is the only one in a video or pic atm.
4) Extending Existing Actors Available Animations -> Not going to happen without Bethesda Releasing their Behavior Tool or someone coming along and writing a 3rd party tool to create/alter some new ones.

Okay well that's something I suppose. Still that's extremely upsetting, this is such a basic function of modding.

Seems we're going to have to spam Bethesda to create/release a tool.

Hah, good luck. The last (and first) time they did that was with Morrowind. It's been a little under a decade since then. For a better sense of just how long that's been, the Iraq mission was began and concluded in that time period.

Believe me I was being optimistic.

They won't even so much as acknowledge this I'm sure.

Bethesda (And likely Valve) has access to the tools, WE just dont. They aren't open source, they are only licensed.

If it is true and you wont find a way to import your dinosaurs its very sad. I like your pictures. I am not such a fan of dinosaurs, but i think a lot of people would be pleased to see them in game. You have done good work. My son would be your greatest fan...

Behavior tool probably needs some work, since not even CK is bugfree.

Water combat mod looks awesome !!

ya , the most fundamental thing is missing from creation kit gg, i know few major modders who are very upset by this and just completely stopped their project in converting some of the mods from oblivion to skyrim

Those are just the two I have completely finished, there are over a dozen others waiting to be sculpted, painted, rigged and sounded. Not to mention all the smaller non-Dinosaur creatures like lizards, crocodiles, fish and sharks, one pterosaur, mammals, insects, birds and amphibians that I hadn't started yet. Not to mention a fair number of plants that are not in Skyrim but existed in the Maastrichtian.

They can replace existing animations within the same context. It seems though that there is no way to add a completely new animation so for example RR_Raptor65's lizards would either have to walk like a human or all humans would have to walk like a lizard.

Tx blutendesherz for the explanation.

I've heard it's the same thing for adding new music... you just can replace a "container" already there... Didnt check.

I don't get it... Havok offers its suite free of charge for non-profits and even titles that sell for less than $10.00.

http://www.havok.com/sales

Havok’s Intel? sponsored free binary-only PC download includes all of the standard features and functionality of the Havok Physics and Havok Animation SDKs and can be used during development to evaluate, prototype, and even commercially release any PC games sold for a retail value of $10.00 USD or less with no license required. Free Basic Licensing required for games being sold for a retail value of above $10.00 USD—or equivalent amount in other currencies based on prevailing exchange rates at the time of launch.
Download Includes:
  • Basic access to Havok Physics and Havok Animation technologies and Havok’s Content Tools for preparation and export of physical assets and characters directly from the most recent versions of Autodesk? Maya?, Autodesk 3ds Max?, and Autodesk XSI?
  • SDK libraries, samples, and technical documentation for software developers
  • Community support through developer forum
  • Platforms support for PC Win32

This doesn't work? It would output HKX at least...
(Yeah. haven't tried yet obviously... haven't needed any animations.)

That's an animation replacer, m8. We can change or replace existing animations fine.
