Cthulhu Chess Set, Finally Finished!

Post » Fri May 27, 2011 10:13 am

I finished the chess set last night. I've been working feverishly on this for a while now, and I think it was completely worth it! It is totally hand-made by myself from sculpting a chunk of wax to cutting out little felt pieces for the feet. This one is going to go up for sale on eBay tonight, but I am keeping the moulds so I can make more. The kings (Cthulhu) have precious stones for eyes; the white piece has spherical lab-created rubies, the black piece has salt water pearls. The queen is Nyarlathotep (has a single large tentacle for a face). The bishops are Father Dagon/ Mother Hydra (take your pick). The knights are Hounds of Tindalos (the knights move in angles, and the hounds move through angles). The rooks are shoggothsThe pawns are Deep Ones.http://i16.photobucket.com/albums/b16/eclectixx/groupscreen.jpghttp://i16.photobucket.com/albums/b16/eclectixx/cthulhu2.jpghttp://i16.photobucket.com/albums/b16/eclectixx/cthulhu1.jpghttp://i16.photobucket.com/albums/b16/eclectixx/HoundsofTindalos.jpghttp://i16.photobucket.com/albums/b16/eclectixx/shoggoth.jpghttp://i16.photobucket.com/albums/b16/eclectixx/pawns.jpgI wanted to say thanks to you guys for your encouragement while I was making this! If you couldn't tell I'm just a little bit proud of it.

That's an absolute masterwork. Every piece looks absolutely terrific. Congratulations on getting the first set finished!I imagine you're going to want to sell the first set as a whole, but have you given any further thought to your payment-through-installments plan?

I was going to mention, there's a reasonably large and rabid collection of Lovecraft fans over at the www.yog-sothoth.com forums. You'd probably find a very appreciative audience over there.

Thanks. I'm not really very good at chess myself, I am too distracted and make stupid mistakes.I am selling this one on eBay right now;http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=6588391398&ssPageName=STRK:MESE:ITStarting bid is only .99! Go on and bid, you know you want to! :PI do plan to offer them on an installment basis. If you are really interested in going that route send me a PM and we can work something out. I am already starting on set #2, so we'll see how this one does. If it doesn't get what I want for it I will ditch eBay and just sell online through my own website (which I really need to work on) and through game stores. I was thinking if you are interested (and this goes for anyone really) I could do an installment program where you send me a certain amount each month and I will send you a few pieces each month. Spread the pain out a little.

Once again, thanks!I woke up this morning and found my box filled with so many messages about this set, I was amazed! Most of them said the same thing; I really want this but I just can't afford it. It made me feel a bit bad actually. I don't want to make people feel like they have to break the bank to get this, on the other hand I gotta eat- the price is merely a reflection of my time spent on them. So I have really had to do some hard thinking- I'm really an artist more than a business man. But I realize that what I have to do is get some help making these so that more people can afford them. I think the reserve price in the auction has deterred a lot of bidders. I have lowered the reserve and I will probably offer it to the highest bidder whether the reserve is met or not. I'm also trying to think of a way to make these more quickly so that I can offer them at this price without killing myself.

The pieces themselves are amazing, but I was hoping you could also do a board.Evil squishy things are no good to play with on a normal board!Since the pieces are showpieces by themselves, make a board to show them off!

Well I am planning a board, but I need to recoup some of my costs from making the pieces first! Also I have more pictures of the set for anyone who's interested. The first photo session didn't turn out like I'd hoped, so this album has better shots of the individual pieces;http://photobucket.com/albums/v427/Tiger_Shark/chess%20set/?start=20

That is really a beautiful set. Excellent choices for the figures, and a very good job on the sculpting. Congratulations on a fine piece of work!

I don't know **** about art and i still like your work. Well done. Hey, what about Herne The Hunter's http://callofcthulhu.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=532&st=0 of two different themes for one set, for example The Race of Cthulhu versus The Elder Things?

I'm sorry, i just thought it was such a great idea! But yeah the pieces look really good. If i'd be a Mythos fanatic and could play chess and if i had money i would get these immediately.

So are you carving these individually? Or did you make a master set and plan to mold and cast them?EDIT: Nevermind I just read the description in the eBay auction.

I'd settle for being called an "illuminated ape descendant", or is that saying about the same thing?

Sorry to bump an old topic, but I thought I'd let everyone know I have a new set up on eBay right now. This one starts at only $200, and has no reserve! Also, I now have an installment payment plan available if needed. http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=6601542828&ssPageName=STRK:MESE:IT
