I don't think it's totally necessary to actually embellish the story to include another character: you don't have to explain what happens to Jack2, for example, when Jack1 hangs himself. (I deemed this a non-spoiler, since you find out about it in the first 30 seconds of the game, hehe). Just having it coop and accepting that this mucks up the story is fine: System Shock 2 had a fan-made coop patch, and nobody complained that both players look almost identical and there's no explanation for why there are two of you. Also, if this is going to be released, who do you think you should inform? Headfirst went under, but maybe Bethesda are the people to ask permission from? Of course, they're not the best PR people in the world (since they didn't give a s**t when Headfirst went under, and didn't release a patch for DCotE) but, on the other hand, this would rekindle interest in the game, and possibly make them a few $$$ for pretty much no effort. A similar case to this is that of King's Quest 9:King's Quest was a much loved adventure series. The first, second and third had graphics in, pretty much, 128x64 resolution. Yup, they looked bad. But back in the day, that was like Unreal 3 graphics. And they had loveable, fariytale storylines and interesting puzzles (although it was far too easy to die). The series reached its peak, most agree, with KQ 6. KQ 7 had less appeal, unfortunately, as they tried to make it cartoony. And with KQ 8, they went down the short, unnerving road of the "ACTION-adventure". Yes, not just "adventure", but with "action" too. This was obviously a desperate attempt to keep the series popular with new, hip kids who liked killing things. I actually liked the combat. Most people, however, didn't. The story was grossly simplified, the main character had absolutely nothing to do with the royal family (who had been protagonists in all the previous 7 games) and most puzzles were very simple. A lot of plot holes were left unfilled, a lot of story threads left twitching in the wind and the series died, horribly, on a low note. But then a group of fans got together and decided to make their own fan-game, which would be the 9th instalment, the one that KQ 9 should have been. They made models, re-wrote an engine originally designed for first person shooters and got to a pretty high standard. They called this game-to-be, "King's Quest Nine - Every Cloak Has a Silver Lining".Now, a little more history. KQ 1 was made by Sierra, a games company which started as a husband and wife in a kitchen and grew to a prestigious adventure-game-making company. Round about the time KQ 8 was released, however, it got sold to somebody. Now, there's a lot of legal mumbo jumbo here, but what it boils down to is that, by the time KQ 9 was really getting up steam, the rights to the KQ franchise belonged, not to its original creator Roberta Williams, but to a big company called Vivendi. Vivendi saw what was going on with KQ9, and put their foot down. They sent a cease and desist letter to the team behind KQ9, on September 30th, 2005. Many, many people (including myself) were bitterly disappointed. We sent letters, emails and petitions to Vivendi. Eventually, sometime on October or November, Vivendi lifted the cease and desist "curse", on two conditions:1) That Vivendi be shown the product before it is released to the public, so they can control what is associated with them. They don't want it to be full of unsavoury images or swear-words, naturally.2) That the name be changed to just "The Silver Lining". While a bit disappointing, a name change wasn't that big a deal, considering what was at stake here.So the project is continuing, to this day. They still haven't released Part 1 (of 3) but they did release a demo a while back, to show everyone they were getting stuff done. It's taking so long because they're doing this in their spare time, rather than as a regular job. But it just shows that little people can do cool things, and have it accepted by the Company and the lawyers. But I really think that you should get in contact with someone at some point, in case they clamp down on you at some point. (Although I doubt they frequent these forums, apart from ex-members of Headfirst like sonofamortician)
