Customizable HUD?

Post » Sat May 28, 2011 12:52 am

Well what do you need on your HUD;
Health (or greying, blood on the screen)
Ammo count (only when firing)
Grenade count (See above)
Ability cool downs (see above)
Objective marker (constant)
Markers for nearby teammates

Most current FPS games fade out most HUD elements when they're not needed so it wouldn't surprise me if SD do the same, anyways that my thoughts.

Health: I prefer health being displayed by the color of my crosshair. Healthbar =/= necessary then
Ammo: Always on, as small as possible
Grenade: only show when switching to grenades (Or if it's instant prime + throw, show with ammo counter. Same goes for 'amount of buffs/... left')
Ability cooldown: Medium size, preferably easily visible. Otherwise: display next to crosshair
Objective marker: Turned off, after a while I wouldn't use it anyways. Still quite good for beginning players
Markers for teammates: None, only when in visible range and on a small compass/map. All enemies within visible range of any teammate should be displayed as well.

Objective markers become more useful with the way Brink gives you objectives based on what your teammates are doing, and what they need. When your teammate is downed, and you're a medic, having an arrow to lead you to the guy will be quite nice.

So when you follow it, he taps out and the arrow will point in the other direction. I was just saying how I would like my HUD ^^

I rather choose objectives myself, instead of following mathematically calculated missions. If someone dies on the front line and you decide it's impossible to get even near him, would you follow the arrow? Besides, a good medic has enough game sense to see which teammates are reachable or which objective would help the team the most. Don't get me wrong, I'll be playing for the objective and trying to help the team but I won't use arrows, nor will I use the objective wheel. For beginning players it's helpfull, for people who have game sense, it's a nice gimmick, for me it's useless in most cases.

As long as I have a small map in one of the corners of my screen that is.

The arrow is only given once you actually select a mission. So in the example I made before, you would hear "man down" on the radio, and then you could open up the objectives menu, go over to the revival mission, and it would point you in the direction the guy was, so you would have an idea where you have to go. If you then selected the mission, the arrow would start leading you towards the guy. But the arrow isnt locked into one path, so even if you take a different direction, the arrow will update and start leading you again.

Additionally, when you take the revival mission, the downed person will get a canned radio message that says "I'm coming to get you" so they know not to tap out. And if they do, I imagine the mission will end, leaving you the opportunity to do a new objective.

I don't know one game which displays your health-status by the colour of your crosshairs.

same here, not to mention i can't find the idea thrilling, at moments the crosshairs could become invisible against certain scenery, and depending on the crosshairs, it could be hard to see how close to dieing you are...

and having info around my crosshair is something i would also dislike, it's easy to see, yes. but it get's in the way of seeing

ET:QW had it as an option. Same goes for W:ET.
You're right that you might have problems seeing it while pointing at some surfaces, but you'll know it before of after pointing at the surface, because it's easy to see otherwise.
Ofcourse you need to take a lot in account when trying to play with the HUD settings I have. I like information near my crosshair, but I'll always try to keep it as small as possible.
Take my example of the ability bar near my crosshair + crosshair health, then I'd try to make my crosshair look like this:

. )

It doesn't blur much of my screen.

ah it's a dot instead of a crosshair? that explains something, but i prefer a crosshair that (at least i hope it resembles that) resembles the spread of my shots.
and i like my info big on the outside of the screen, quick glance is all i need and it doesn't take away any visibility of where i want to see

It all comes down to personal preference and that's why the HUD should be customazible ;)

Health on the left, ammo on the right.

Anyway, doesn't Global Agenda have this kind of a display? HL2 does for sure.

Yes, crosshairs like that do exist, some even show reload time or grenade timing.

In Combat Arms, you can get a display for that by paying for a special reflex scope and adding it to your weapon.

Wow this is a way bigger discussion than i originally intended. But whatever. I think that you should be able to certain different ways of seeing a certain option, like seeing a visual representation of bullets vs. a number, health bar vs. number, stuff like that. And choosing the opaqueness and toggling optional elements of the hud would be helpful as well.
