Customizable HUD?

Post » Sat May 28, 2011 1:06 am

Well, i was reading the latest copy of OXM (official xbox magazine) and they had an article about Brink. I eagerly read it, and they said they played a demo for it. They commented on how fun it was, but they complained about a cluttered HUD. I havent seen any gameplay videos with the HUD in place (and if you know where i can find one that would be great" but i actually prefer a cluttered HUD to fill me in on everything going on in the game. But that got me thinking, what if you wanted to make your own HUD? You could toggle different styles of health bars and such, and move them around to a desired location. I know it is too late in production to even hope for this to be implemented, but in a game that encourages so much customization, wouldnt this be a perfect feature?

I bellieve the dev team has talked about this but dont quote me on it, most gameplay videos have hud http://www.eurogamer.net/videos/brinks-container-city-gameplay one has it for sure.

a bit old, but seems to cover the territory.
if not, then it's the place to talk about it i guess.

again, took a while to find it, found it using the search this time though

I've already seen those trailers but that doesnt show the HUD. It didnt show your current ammo or class like the oxm article said.

Has HUD.

They originally planed on having a bare-bones HUD that would only display things as they were needed, with only the cross-hairs visible when nothing is going on. You can see this in the earliest container city videos. SD seems to have abandoned this, as you can see in Baseball Bat's link.

PC version definetly needs to have a customizable HUD. I used this for Enemy Territory for example. And ofcourse games like TF2.
I personally think every game should have a customizable HUD. Size, location, transparency etc. Maybe even different options - health as numbers or a bar.

Some people would definetly want to put their ammo count and health near their reticle so they can also focus on them when shooting at the enemy. Others want to make them small and just hide them.

I really like this style. Makes you focus on the important things only.

Would be sad if they took it out entirely.

I'm also a fan of the minimalistic HUD. Even if they only have a few options with degrees of 'clutter' as opposed to an outright custom HUD...

Or you could even change the style of the HUD.

Idk we're only months from the release date so they're probably not going to add things they're probably tweaking things. And if they were to add something this wouldnt be at the top of the list.

Tweaking HUD elements can be part of the polishing they're doing. It does make sense, since it's a detail but not just a small one. If you know what I'm saying.

Yeah i get what you're saying but im still not sure. Whatever it would be an awesome feature but it'll be a great game even without it. Thank god you're not a total [censored] like most people on the internet.

Then there's the console players. What do we do? Sit in a corner and cry?

That's not such a bad idea...

best maps and mods would probably be ported to the consoles or something similar to that.

I'm sure SD would be willing to do that, but Microsoft has sometimes made odd or restrictive rules about XBL patches, usually to the tune of Microsoft wanting as much money as possible.

Although I think consoles do support modding already.

I enjoy how the hud looks. Doesn't cut anything out. People at OXM are really picky if it isn't they're not given some money to support it. Or work for the game's publisher. (Seriously, read throught it a little bit more, they're whipped by Microsoft)

Consoles can handle it. But Microsoft and Sony don't allow any modificated games to enter their consoles.

Doubtful, Microsoft cares much more than Sony. Sony doesn't really give a crap from what i can tell. (But go figure, you pay 60 bucks a year to be told you can't mod or you get banned by Microsoft, why not just connect us to PC gamers you jerks?)

This is the latest build of the game I've seen. I love the HUD, it tells you everything you need to know and looks good while doing it.

Well what do you need on your HUD;
Health (or greying, blood on the screen)
Ammo count (only when firing)
Grenade count (See above)
Ability cool downs (see above)
Objective marker (constant)
Markers for nearby teammates

Most current FPS games fade out most HUD elements when they're not needed so it wouldn't surprise me if SD do the same, anyways that my thoughts.

Personally, i like to know how much ammo i have left in games like brink, where getting a resupply is going to be common, same with grenades. I would prefer to have a wealth of information and learn to ignore the stuff that doesn't concern me, than to have to keep mental tabs on the things that are going to fade away.
