Dear Obsidian...

Dear Obsidian,

I feel absolutely compelled to share my frustrations about Fallout: New Vegas with you. This is not something I would normally do, but I really feel that as a consumer who has purchased your product with my hard-earned dollars I have a right to speak my mind.

Before I start, let me just say that I played though Fallout 3 (Xbox 360) twice (good guy/bad guy) for a combined total of 193 hours. I also purchased and completed all of the expansion packs that were released. In all that time, I can only think of a handful of occasions where there were some minor glitches in the game that briefly interrupted my experience. I LOVED Fallout 3.

Now, onto New Vegas.

In the 66 hours I've invested into your game so far, I have experienced:

- Countless game crashes where I've had to restart my console. I would say confidently that on average, I have to restart my console once for every one and a half hours of gameplay.
- Broken quests, which have resulted in me having to go online to find out exactly what I did that caused the glitch to occur, and reload old save games (costing me hours of time) in order to go back and do it another way.
- Items disappearing from my inventory, never to be seen again.
- Horrendous, inexcusable load times, some in excess of 2 minutes, that have almost fooled me into thinking the game has frozen.
- Frame rates so bad the game is unplayable, resulting in me having to back out of the game completely and restart it.
- Audio glitches, including one last night where Knight Lorenzo's voice changed in mid-conversation.
- Enemies and NPCs falling through, or floating above, the game world.
- Unresponsive controls, ex: having to press 'B' multiple times to enter my Pip-Boy (not during combat, simply standing around doing nothing).
- Companions who 'wait' in locations for no apparent reason.
- Invisible walls all over the friggin' place! Seriously!?

I could go on, but I think you get the point. I'd also like to mention that in my opinion, based on my own personal experience with New Vegas, that the patches released so far have done NOTHING to fix any of these problems.

I do understand that with a game this complex, and of this size, that certain bugs are bound to get through testing. However, there is no excuse for releasing a game this broken, this buggy, to retail.

I am writing this post just to let you guys know that once I am finished with the main quest, seeing as how I've already invested quite a bit of my time (I'm not even going to bother with any side quests at this point), I'm going to trade your game in for credit towards another title (which is something I've never done before). I will not play though it a second time as I was planning to do before I picked it up, nor will I purchase any expansions to the game (which are also extremely broken and buggy from what I've read). I am so insulted, quite frankly, at the quality of this game that the odds of me ever purchasing another title developed by your company is slim to none. Too bad.

Was wondering where these threads went. :P

Anyway, either it's your console or it's the disc, try exchanging it for a new disc, if it still doesn't work then I'd say the problem lies within your console.
It's still Bethesda's fault though.

I haven't experienced any of these. I thank Bethesda for doing their bug testing well.

Of course, Obsidian has made only flawless games before NV :P

Bethesda handled QA and they set the release date.
Obsidian may have developed the game but they were not in charge of making sure it "worked" properly at release date.
That was Bethesda's job, they could always have delayed the game a month or so to fix it up more but they didn't.
Hence, Bethesda's fault.

Yep. All those things are true, and it's still a great game. I hate the bugginess as much as anyone, but wuddayagunnado, not buy it? It's Fallout.

I sincerely hope that the game gets patched enough so that you and all others who have these problems can enjoy the game as much as us others can.
I dislike knowing that some people can't enjoy this great game. :(

I have clearly not played the game enough yet. The only bugs I've encountered have been a few tolerable clipping mistakes.
(Guy's hiding in boulders and scorpions slightly below ground level; a couple times I saw Doc Mitchel standing on his metal shelves in the hall ~behind them clipping the shelf and the wall).

*But this is on the PC platform.

For the record, it's not that I "dislike" the game, I love Fallout (and Oblivion for that matter). It's just that New Vegas has become more frustrating than fun to play thanks to the issues that plague the game.

@gabriel77dan: I actually have tried using another game disc, but that did not help with any of the problems I have experienced. It was business as usual.

I understand that each individual will have a different experience, and may not encounter the issues that I have. I'm simply stating my opinion based on my 66+ hours with the game so far.

If Bethesda truly was in charge of Q&A than my original post applies as much to them as it does to Obsidian.

You are not the only one, plenty have come here and made their complaints.
Unfortunately I'm afraid you'll have to wait until the next patch (whenever that is). I'll help you people hope they'll iron out most game stopping bug in it.

I have had a lot of the same issues. Most of them I ignore. The ones that bother me the most are broken quests as this really takes away from the game play for me. Well written letter.

just for you guys to know, and Bethesda as well, i sold my copy of FNV today. My retailer gave me a decent prize for it, more than enough for me to buy an used copy of Castlevania lord of shadows.

So, this is my last post on this forum :) Hope you'll get your patch, guys, and see you on fallout online maybe ;)

Bye !

Because Bethesda knew exactly what they were getting into with Obsidian. I hope I'm wrong, I really do, but given Obsidian's history I seriously doubt any of this will ever be fixed. Including the bug that deletes all your saves.

Very well said that man. I have encountered most of these bugs as well. The invisible walls, wether a bug or not are extremely annoying. A game these days should not have invisible walls. Trying to run away from something trying to kill you and thinking you can run up a medium grade hill only to be stopped by an invisible wall is frustrating to say the least.
Antoher bug i have come across which really [censored]s up the gameplay is when i'm crouched and aiming, the gun alot of the time will jump up like he's holding it above or directly in front of his face completely obscurring my ability to see what i'm aiming at. When this causes me to get killed i want to throw the controller at the tv.
The game froze on me today mid battle, even causing my controller to stick in rumble. I had to take the battery off to stop it vibrating.
Bethesda obviously released this game before it was ready to cash in on Christmas sales. This shows a total lack of respect for it's customers and fanbase.

Just to add to my list above:

- I have also experienced the "glitch" where your gun is held up in front of your face, obscuring anything you're looking at. I've found that only seems to happen with larger weapons, so I tend to just switch to a pistol to get around it.
- While in Vault 11, Raul (you know, the guy with 3 lines of dialogue that he repeats over and over and over, etc.) walked into a wall and got stuck there. Luckily I had an autosave that I was able to reload, but still...

It really svcks to see that we're all having about the same issues. I sincerely hope that Obsidian and Bethesda are listening and are working on another patch for this game.

I have also had all the exact same problems, the first time the DLC Error occured I had over 80+ hours of gameplay and just about finished the main story line. Got the error, but just started a new game, did every quest between Goodsprings and New Vegas, and when I got done with the BoS I got the error again, this time at about 60 hours of gameplay. Therefore I have to say I am highly dissappointed at the game, and if there isn't going to be a patch soon, i'm returning the game for my money. And I will never buy another game from them again. Fallout 3 was great, Oblivion was excellent. But this, this is a travisty that should have been addressed before they released this game to the waiting public who eagerly grabbed up the game thinking that, their new game would be well worth the investment. But, instead of a game that keeps you entertained for hours, I now have a game that's sitting on my table getting ready to go back to GameStop and i'm recommending that no-one I know wastes their money on this game. They should care enough about their customers to where we can at least, play through the whole game. And yes, I know what you are thinking, your thinking i'm over reacting. Well, when you put all the hours in a game to try to achieve 100% completion and it just stops working, i'm sure you'd be pretty mad to. Therefore, Obsidian and Bethesda are at fault for this. And if they don't address this problem soon I promise you that their ratings and the money they are making from this game will plummet. I'm sad to say, that I offically will never buy anything with Obsidian or Bethesda's name on it again. How can I trust their future games, if they won't even take care of the ones they have out now?

I agree - I have exchanged this game for 3 discs in a desperate attempt to make this work. My game freezes every 2 mins - I cant get past talking to the robot in town without wanting to run out into the street and scream and smash cars. No game has ever made me this mad.

I wouldn't mind if there was just some public acknowledgement that this game is broken and they are working on a patch. I don't care if they don't have a date, just let us know you care. The silence says more than any statement that they could not give a crap and are enjoying our money.

Update:

So I believe I'm fairly close to completing the main quest, however, now the game seems to freeze every other time (give or take) that I fast travel. Needless to say, this is more than frustrating. In fact, it's [censored] ridiculous. Has anyone heard if New Vegas is going to get another patch or what? I would really rather not trade this game in before beating the main storyline, simply because I'm uptight like that and it will annoy me to no end knowing I've invested so much time for nothing. Anyways, I'm going to try and beat the game today, wish me luck.

I'd definately have to agree with shinzo 110,000%! I became a huge fan of fallout 3 for a first when I aimlessly pick up the title and started playing for hours on end. Rarely never experiences any major bug issues there and absolutely it! So naturally when I picked up FNV I was like a kid in a candy store, as it were, only to be fully disappointed by the time I actually got the main guest going finding numerous frustrating glithes and downright stupid issues with the games main physics. I mean really!... what in thee blue hell?! I cant recall how many times I've have to restart during those annoyingly long load times, much less after I made quite a bit of progress, not even realizing I'd have to save every 5 mintues or so, just so I wouldnt have to redo a quest, reattain equipment I spent hours on, trying to get for my own personal amusemant or have to kill those deathclaws all over again! Yeah sure I'm currently still playing NV as I speak, only becouse I paid my hard earned moment for it, but rest assured there hasnt been a time upon turning on my console that my spiral into the fallout world wasnt obsured by some buggy heavily cussed at incident of the game "cheating" as I call it. I've found myself frequently wanting to get up and just snap the disc in two out of sheer moments of being highly enraged with some things like all of you have stated should have been addressed and fixed well upon prior to the titles release. its almost like they fused and threw it all into a blender and let the game itself decide how to play out. The shoddy AI alone is a joke, mainly when my companions are no where to be found. I've caught Boone standing blindly in a spot, no enemies in sight, and had to engage in one on one conversation just to get him to follow me again after I already coordinated his tactics. The was a perticular spot where I accessed the train tunnel door by lockpicking it by rauls shack, and after killing all the ghouls came upon the entry way to the left mid way through, and kept falling THROUGH the floor, only to end up on the opposite end of the tunnels exit. Even my companions couldnt go through the door, but the ghoul inside that room came out attacking just fine. For once I never thought I'd get the "pleasure" of seeing such a huge and obvious clipping issue with any game period! Thats just inexusable Bethesda! I mean come on, it wouldnt have killed all of you to spend a few more months working out all those major kinks that defy the point of even enjoying it, yeah like any hardcoe gamer, much less a loyal fan to your franchise ISNT going to notice something like that! Are you people actually trying to turn away consumers or what?? Not too bright on buisness stradegies are we? My personal opinion(since yes they are like a*holes, we all gottem) and advice as a fan of fallout and oblivion, dont hype up and make such a big deal about such a universally proclaimed sequal to an otherwise title with your own built renown for your company unless you plan on effectively and efficiently delivering a quality product at least of decent proportion. nuff said.
