This also took me a while. I tried 4 times and killed Legate himself every time, but it was his guards that come after you that always killed me, there's like 30 of them! I eventually had to load a previous save and do some more quests to increase my level and skills. If you're up to it, try to get the Remnant Power Armor, it helps A LOT.

Best way to deal with Legate is to take a character with High Strenght, Guns, and the Anti-Material Rifle with .50 Cal AP rounds. Bring a Psycho for the + Damage, and maybe a Steady too, to let you aim better.

Sneak so that you're hidden from him, aim and make a perfect headshot from Sneak.

It will kill him on Normal hardcoe difficulty in one shot.

Be mindful though, that if you want to fight him as a man, he will have a lot of guards helping him. Armed with Ballistic fists that will one hit you. And Marksman Carbines, that will tear you to pieces to matter where you run.

Dude no offense but the legate is a joke. Didn't even use drugs and I just blasted his head off with one shot from my YCS. Honestly I was really disappointed

Legate is overrated. The first time I went againt him , I crippled him with my missile launcher and then cripple as he was ran away from me toward the hill where other guards came to his rescue just so they could eat lead from my AMA. I blew legate's head with my AMR and AP ammo.

A tough battle, to be sure. I wore T-51b powered armor, spammed super stimpacks, jacked myself up on chems, and head-shotted him with my Gauss rifle and it was still pretty close. His Blade of the East weapon has a habit of destroying and/or knocking your weapons to the ground. I'd suggest bringing more weapons and ammo than you think you need, and possibly repair parts for your armor. Just run n' gun it - give him no quarter!

Easily the most epic fight in the game - I wasn't disappointed.

I have to agree, the Legate is overrated. I stayed to the rock self on my right side, got into position, and with the AMR using Inc rounds, I one hit killed him. Then in 2-3 shots, with Boone helping, took out his 2 goons by the tent. It was alot harder just fighting my way across the dam to get to his camp.

Light Machine Gun with expanded magazine and AP rounds, plus a turbo.

I killed Legate and his guards with a single clip.

Like others have said, use chems and magazines. Also get a strong companion.... Try using http://fallout.wikia.com/wiki/Paladin_Toaster.

i dressed as a sheep and seduced him

while he slept in his tent i tied cheese wire to his wedding tackle and the main tent pole and screamed "fire fire fire"

he died of shock and blood loss

First playthrough he was hard, because I had [censored] armour and weapons. NCR Bandoleer Armour and a Hunting Shotgun - unmodded.
I also wasted all my stimpacks on the way there, so I had barely any health.
The only reason I won was by crippling his arm so he can't use that sword, then using VATS to target the grenade he equiped.

On my second playthrough, he was very easy.
Sneak attack from AMR with AP rounds, takes off about 85-90% of his health. I then targeted his head in VATS and killed him. I also had

Strategy is less important than getting him alone. As long as you've put some decent number of points into Speech, you should be able to at least manage that, and then beat him down while he chases your companions or (if you have them) Remnants with whatever you have available. Like someone mentioned above, Veronica in power armor is fantastic in this role; she can certainly die, but you should be able to get more than enough shots off (even with the slow-ass AMR) to save her.

78 speech + educated + meeting people magazine + some booze/party time mentats = victory

If you chuck some grenades in the guard towers that will sometimes make some of the guys come down where you can deal with them without activating Legate.

That can help a little.

I was able to challenge him to a duel with my speech skill. He killed the Securitron, but Veronica wailed on him with her ballistic fist and I shot him full of plasma with a regular plasma rifle. That was enough to take him down. Oh - and I had to heal Veronica a few times.

Legate is hard to fight here's what you need to do. 1st you need to Sneak Critical him with the Anti-Material Rifle then he will come down and speak to you if your quick you can switch weapons before he talks to you now this is the important part. There will be two other legion members with unarmed gloves that do a ton of damage so focus on them 1st. Try Headshots with the Riot Shotgun, Brush Gun, 12.7 MM Gun, All American. Next after you take down the two legion members focus on Legate mind his sword it does a ton of damage and Legate moves really fast for someone his size. Headshots and Leg Shots work great on him.

I love the ending with Oliver if you side with Mr. House or Yes Man, Oliver still thinks he can beat you and their are 50 securitrons right behind him :rofl: :rofl:
