Disabling AA, Enabling FXAA = Awesome

Post » Sat May 19, 2012 12:06 am

So I did as the title says, disabled AA from the launcher and enabled FXAA and I think the quality and performance both improved. I went from lagging terribly to being as smooth as butter!

Doesn't seem to change anything for me. Just wish they would fix the problems with the mouse on the menus, and the Minecraft-looking shadows (even on ultra).

Oh my god, this made such an incredible difference.
This completely removed my input lag and stuttering.
I cannot thank you enough for this tip.

I did this before I saw this topic so I've been running that way a while now. I definitely can add another voice saying that this improves performance a lot. I don't know if you need FXAA checked at all, though. The game just did that for me by default. I turned off AA myself because I noticed that turning my head dropped frame rate.

Hey hey! You're welcome! Reading the following link does show that foliage (for example) won't be as sharp with FXAA, but perhaps the increased performance is worth the quality hit for most people. Read more here: http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/skyrim-performance-benchmark,3074.html

Anyway, happy gaming!

Confirmed, this pretty much fixed every issue I had. I was just about to post a thread about how the trees and grass wouldn't move at all (or, only in very, very long intervals), and I was just kinda getting used to Skyrim generally being laggy until it's patched. Then I see this thread, try it out and *BAM*, it runs so goddamned smooth I want to cry! Thanks OP, you're a genius.

wow, I didn't want to use it because it always looked so bad on most other games but for skyrim it actually seems to work, and no blurry edges either, image looks clear and runs smoother, great tip op, I would of never used it if you didn't suggest it

how do you enable fxaa?

Go to Advanced setting on the launcher. Click the FXAA box...

how do you enable fxaa?

From the initial menu, choose options -> advanced. You can check a box there to make FXAA the AA mode.

It's a shader based AA mode developed by nVidia, but works on AMD hardware too. I use it.

Yes FXAA is awesome. Disabling MSAA, It allows me to play on Ultra while with regular MSAA i'd be limited to High on my system (GTX260, Core i7).

Thanks for this, switching to FXAA on my gtx 460 now gives me a minimum of 40fps outside opposed to the 30 i was getting before with occasional drops to the 20's.

My game runs at 60 FPS with AA and anti on max..but I still might try this and see if there is any boost and if there is any visual loss.

This made a huge difference for me initially, but it seems like after an hour or so the issues come back. The controls are very laggy and seems to "stick" a lot.
Thanks a lot for the info though!

Umm this post is kind of a waste of space. You mean to tell me people with bad frame rates did not try playing without AA? Use some common PC sense......its a very demanding option.

Vsync is usually the cause of mouse lag, if you haven't already try adding iPresentInterval=0 to the [Display] section of the ini which will disable it. Can't remember if it was the skyrim.ini or skyrimprefs.ini.

Boggles me that there is no Vsync option in the settings...I like to disable it to see how high my FPS skyrockets on my system..and then leave it if it doesn't have bad tearing. I didn't know Vsync was forced..that explains my constant 60-65 FPS instead of higher.

^ what he said. It's in the Skyrimprefs.ini file of your MyDocuments/MyGames/Skyrim folder. Just do a Ctrl+F to find the line 'iPresentInterval' and change it to 0.

Cheers

I found this out also as I was looking for a way to solve the random invisible / transparent glitches I was experiencing.

FXAA is fantastic and works 10x better in this game than regular antialiasing.
