Dissapointed In the game's weapons

Post » Sun Mar 06, 2011 11:49 am

After playing the game for some quite time, I am disappointed in the game's availability of powerful/accurate automatic weapons. I know the game has automatic weapons, but none really appeal to me :| I believe I've encountered every automatic weapon and they all disappoint.
Unless anybody knows of an automatic weapon I haven't heard of, that is powerful/accurate.

Marksman Carbine/All American might as well be automatic as fast as it fires.

You want a gun that's powerful, accurate, and automatic. You're right, there isn't one. You can get a gun that is any 2 of those 3 variables, but not all 3.

Most of the game's story line was based on kind of a western front, and all the cowboys had back then were repeater rifles and revolvers. Or maybe Bethesda just decided that there were way to many autos in Fallout 3 so maybe they should tune them down a bit?

Hmm that may be it. I always have certain weapons, 1 long rage weapon, 1 close range weapon(shotgun), 1 melee weapon and an automatic weapon, and none appealed to me.

Word.

Ive found all of the auto's (I think) and I don't use any of them. Unless you wanna spray into a croud of weak unamored enemies, I dont see the point.

The point is to not make them too powerful and be a "finger of death" weapon.

Light Machine Gun with AP ammo is awesome.

It's only accurate out to medium range, but it tears up anything. I used it on the final boss and it was deadly.

Also avenger minigun if you've got enough strength to use it.

But they aren't powerful, why waste my ammo and such?

Sadly, that seems to be true :(

Hmm, I've never thought about that, That's very true.

I agree...automatic weapons aren't as good as they once were, but it serves some purpose such as what gabriel said. They're not too bad though especially with AP rounds.

Aren't single-shot weapons generally more powerful than their automatic equivalents bullet-for-bullet IRL as well? I realize there are exceptions to this, but as a rule o' thumb...

I think this is mainly the reason, as automatic weapons are extremely powerful with the right ammo.

I found that I stayed away from the automatic weapons after a time; too hard to keep enough good ammo for them, and on hardcoe I can't carry "several thousand rounds". I agree with an earlier poster - the All American is plenty of fire for short-range / tactical engagements.

The Assault Carbine fits all the requirements mentioned. However, automatic weapons are less controllable than semi-automatic ones. Unless you have a firm stance and good grip, you're likely going to be spraying bullets everywhere.

This. A BAR would be awesome, not to mention that it was the main weapon that Bonnie and Clyde used.

BAR? Big Angry Raygun?

As for automatic weapons - I actually didn't really use them much in FO3, and find myself using them more in NV, with the right character. I'm enjoying the 9mm SMG.

Er...if we want to get all real-world, the rule of thumb is: a 5.56mm round through a 20" barrel is a 5.56mm round through a 20" barrel is a 5.56mm round through a 20" barrel. Unless some variable (bullet weight, cartridge loading, barrel length, etc.) changes, same bullet at same velocity which equals same damage assuming same hit location.

Assuming same barrel length, a bolt-action gets a slight velocity edge but it's almost negligible, while it gets a notable accuracy edge that accounts for bolt action being "sniper's choice" overall.

Given same caliber, real-world automatic/semi-auto/single-shot weapons are the same bullet for bullet but the automatic (or burst fire) ones are much meaner over time- for reasons that should be abundantly obvious. :D

A BAR is a Browning Automatic Rifle.

AKA: If the world's baddest son of a [censored] were a gun. Uses .50 BMG rounds, IIRC, and is fully automatic.

svck it, AMR.

EDIT: I was ninja'd, and they're .30-06. Somehow, that makes it even cooler.

Not necessarily....they are as a rule more accurate though as with a single shot or bolt action you don't have a reciprocating action constantly ejecting spent cartridges and slamming fresh ones into the chamber at a high rate of speed.

Only thing is.... .30-06 rounds would probably be rare, seeing as in the Fallout universe they've already been replaced with .308 rounds (the civilian version of the 7.62 x 51mm NATO round).

But damn, would using that gun ever be AWESOME.

That would probably make automatics viable again.

I don't know how hard it would be to do, but they could add .30-06 rounds to the game. Change the ammo used for This Machine and Hunting Rifle to .30-06 if need be.
