Does anybody still want spears?

Post » Wed Jul 04, 2012 9:29 am

i think you cant recall morrowind animations because they were so bad you blocked them out
Does anyone remember movement animations in Oblivion, how you would strafe whilst walking forward. They seem to have managed to make animation a surmountable notch better in Skyrim than it was in Oblivion. I doubt they'll figure out that spears aren't worth having in the game because the animations are simply too difficult for them to make. However if that is the case than they are no doubt unworthy as developers to have something as unique as spears in their game.

Halberds would be nice. You can stab and slash with them.

That's right, put all effort into how it looks and no effort in quality and quantity!

with a spear it would just be *stab*.......

Oh god, try at least looking up on these things on the net before you blab out something like this.

I mean i can see why you would want crossbows. We even got crossbows. But spears? Whatdoya just stab at the enemy with them? That doesnt sound fun at all......
And on a sidenote, I honestly fail to see why crossbows needed to be implemented, it's basically just a variation of a bow which is operated mechanically. In medieval times it was basically known as the noobs weapon, being favored by untrained militia whose king wouldn't bother spending coin on their traning but rather just supply the force with crossbows instead of bows and training.

I'd love all types of ancient/medieval weapons, especially spears and throwing javelins. I'd also like swords that you can stab with and different lengths too. Shortswords fitted in so well with the archer/hunter type of character in Morrowind and Oblivion, now you just have daggers and longswords.

halberds were the first thing i though when i saw horse mounted combat.
Those are commonly known as lances, halberds have most commonly been used by infantry, specifically useful for hooking horse mounted knights off their mounts and hooking into shields exposing the user or hacking into shield bearers from overhead, but the same could be said for axes in regards to having a curved blade that can hook into the shield or hack from overhead.

Polearm weapons would be an awesome addition. They would obviously have the llongest range of all melee weapons.

Staff
Spear
Naginata
Halberd
Bec de Corbin (or whatever a hammer + spike weapon is)
Lance

I wrote them in what I think is fastest to slowest. For perks:

Thrust passive skill (+20% damage each rank)
Trip (perform a quick maneuver which trips any two legged opponent except Giants)
Disarm (knocks weapon away from opponent)
Blur - passive skill (Move with blinding speed using the entire weapon. Deals X% of weapon damage when successfully blocking an incoming melee attack. 10% at rank 1, 15% rank 2, 20%max rank 3)
Impale (powerful attack that penetrates armor (enemy armor rating reduced 50%)

These are a few ideas I would like to see.

I don't care either way. If they did come back though it would be cool.

I'm not even sure why do people think Bethesda couldn't handle spears? Not like current things are that horribly realistic, no "lone" adventurer would actually fight by just swinging weapon and blocking, these kind of combats, and even those during massive fights, looked much more like judo than a sword fight, and I don't see an option to grab my opponent, disarm him by smacking him down or wrestling his weapon out of his hand.

So I think Bethesda would do just fine with polearms.

Yes I would love spears. As long as the animations don't go over board.

Also throwing weapons and flails we need ASAP.

I would definitely like spears (2H & 1H) as well as throwing knives and axes.
It fits with the mythology and would suit certain character types.

Naginata falls in the "hafted blade" family of polearms.
I would love to see them diferentiate between the traditional spears, pikes, and hafted weapons(halbards and naginatas etc.)
But if they do add polearms I suspect they will have one generic type. Just as they did with two handed weapons.

Well, this was nice. It seems that some do not care if it is included but otherwise the rest seem to really want it.
Spear thread was a success, thank you, community.

Yes I do think they would be included as just a generic "spear" type but that doesn't mean we can't have community made naginatas, or whatever you could wish for. If we get spears in Skyrim we will have just about every medieval weapon type there is, the spear is the only missing link here.

yeah but with swords its like swish swish, and with bows its like kkkkkkk, pew. with a spear it would just be *stab*.......

No, spear is more like

SWOOSH through the air and then stab with the pointy part coming out the other side of the corpse. You get my point here.

I wouldn't be much surprised if it would, naginata could easily go under akaviri section.

EDIT: oh right, there is no classic akaviri stuff, other than couple of Blades equipment. Well, mods then.

Oh I'd just like magic staves you can melee with too like a normal staff. Would be nice to have one with say, candlelight, and also be able to use it as a two handed weapon - block and attack.

But I won't say no to other long weapons.
