Does Anybody Want To Create A Fan Game?

Post » Fri May 27, 2011 8:38 am

Werian: Welcome aboard! If you could take care of the audio side of things (along with whatever me and Nyarla are able to help with) that would be excellent! Thank you very much for helping.Nyarla/Werian: I agreed with your recommendations regarding the music. The 'Intro - storm&horror.ogg' can be used for the loading screen, if that is what you both would like? If so let me know and I can add it to the game build. Also Werian, could you make two short .wav files one of radio crackle/hiss/white noise, and one of just soft rain? If you both agree, I think it would be good to have these playing in the intro level.Nyarla: I have built a new level based on your new floorplan. It is actually about 5 rooms off one corridor, but all of them roughly the same apart from some different features, less doors, different wall textures etc. The door you start facing is the one closest to your specs, the one furthest away is the one I like. However this is a group decision, and I am quite happy to make changes as we all decide, and abandon my fav if nobody else likes it :)New level design below:http://www.sendspace.com/file/4yn0x7All: please download the new level (above) it is a .zip folder, in which is the .exe file. Please let us know what you think.Caleb (and Werian, since Caleb's post was addressed to you): You are right FPSC is not brilliant. However it does have at least two benefits. It is 'drag & drop' and it creates .exe's, so people do not need another program in order to run the level. I am not such an adoring fan of FPSC that I need to defend it otherwise. Everything to do with this game is a group decision. If we all decide to use another engine, then that is absolutely cool, but I do not have time (at the moment) to learn anything more complicated than 'drag & drop', so if we did decide to use another engine, we would need somebody who could commit their time to building the level with the materials the rest of us provide. Caleb are you offering to do this? For the moment I am happy enough with FPSC (even with its short-comings), but please everybody let everybody else know how you feel. And good luck with your project Caleb :)Chris.

Chris.I can help you to bbuild the the level. But... I'm a very bad designer. My levels is very poor...I have some Engines in my collection. I can give you a list. Just ask me.Caleb.P.S I played your game. It's not bad. But not very good. 65%.

Hi Caleb,I think 65% is too generous! :) It is not even a level yet, let alone a game.Could you post a list of the engines you have please? As I said above, Im happy with FPSC at the moment, but if everybody on the project wants to swap then that is okay by me. So if people did want to swap, you would not be building levels on your own, as we would be providing the materials e.g. Nyarla with flooprlans and level design, Werian with Audio, me with textures etc. However until and if people do want to swap, I will continue building things in FPSC. Maybe you would be kind enough to help us out in other ways?Cheers,Chris.

@Caleb Hmm, I know what you mean. But in my opinion FPSC give us ready scripts, textures and other things, for example we don't need render new models. And default models from "ww2" are very similar to "lovecraft times". On the other hand, create some special scripts, creatures or objects will be very hard or sometimes impossible :/ I thing that we should continue this project in FPSC, but in future we have to think also how we could improve this project to other engine. I know basics of C# (I have also Microsoft Visual Studio 2005), it's everything what I can help you in more difficult engines :) @Chris Here are a few examples of files with sounds what you need :) Choose the best :]http://www.sendspace.com/file/way4tqI prepare this files in ogg, because wav files have very big size. For example, rain3.ogg it's only 708 KB, and rain3.wav it's 6,5 MB :/PS. Chris, I think this level is a little too dark, when I start this file first time, I don't see anything 8) Rooms looks very good, I like this lamps on desk. :cthulhu:

The newest version of the intro level is pitch black for me.About the possiblity of switching to another engine:I vote against it. FPSC is very rigid, but I'm afraid that we couldn't finish the game with something more complicated. Fan projects with comlicated editors become more and more complex in time and usually bleed to death. With FPSC we MIGHT get something done. And it's produces a standalone exe file.

Werian: I have downloaded all the sound files, I like Radio2. The rain sounds have some pauses in them. I will try and put them in place this weekend. I may need .wav files though, as I tried an .ogg earlier and it did not seem to work.Nayarla: I have done something different with the lights. I will change them and post again.Chris.

All:Some may have found the last level I posted too dark. Here is the same level again, but hopefully lighter this time:http://www.sendspace.com/file/2dvrwqPlease let us know which room/details you prefer. Remember we are still creating the intro level of our game, so it will be basic. It would be great to hear people's comments/ideas, especially if they are able to help or get involved in some way.Nyarla:I hope you can see this one. Let me know which room you prefer, and/or which details and I will finalise one room.Werian:Which room/details do you prefer? In the end there will only be one.Hope to hear from you all soon,Chris.

Wow, you have been working, Chris.I like the first room. I chose it because it has the right texture (the other one is too blank) and there are doors on the left wall which makes it look less empty. The second best is the room at the other end of the corridor. That pentagramm on the floor is a nice touch but I don't think we should use it here. The players probably wouldn't get it that the protagonist is an occultism buff and pentagramms shouldn't be stepped on anyway so we can't really put it in the living room.I think we have a starry sky now. Some minor suggestions:Maybe we should put the newspaper on the desk instead of the table. Now that I see it, it looks too blatant there. How about two chairs for the table? And some pictures for the wall.I cut a part out of the previously posted storm-sound file, now it's 02:43 long and I don't think that the player will spend more time than that in the flat so looping won't be a problem. (Because I think it would be audible when that file restarts. I tried to copy a piece of it's end to it's beginning so that the transition would be smoother but I think it will be audilble.)http://www.sendspace.com/file/v71nnkWith that, and Dancing Cheek to Cheek playing from the radio I think we've got some basic atmophere in our hands. (But who turned on the radio if the player just arrived? )

Nyarla:If the first room is your favourite, we will go with that one. However since you liked the very last one (and its my favourite too) we could amalgamate some of the features from both. The pentagram is not a pentagram as such (a pentagram being a 'five' pointed star) but a magic circle. However if you think players wont get the reference then we will leave it out. The newspaper is too blatant out there on the table, so I think it would be better on the desk - also, since the player starts the level to the left it would make sure the player goes into the level, i.e. to the right. I will put some pictures on the walls. I can put some chairs at the table, but I think it would be best to re-texture the table as it does not look in keeping with everything else. In terms of alternatives, I think it might be nice to re-introduce the setee and coffee table. Also, I have d/l a model pack, which contains some nice bookcases and an interesting fireplace, and I was thinking that these might be an interesting alternative to the table and/or one of the left wall doors. What do you think? In any case, I am going to replace the empty shelves we have in the room.I d/l and played the storm sounds. They are cool, but I think they would be better for level 2 (the mansion) I think they would create a better mood there, as they sound quite 'dark' & 'heavy'. Werian made some cool sound files (.ogg so quite small), about four posts up, so have a look. He made some nice rain sounds (I think rain2 is the best) which would sound good. He also made some radio noise sounds, although I really do love the 'feel' of cheek to cheek (especially the version I have). I think his rain sounds would be better for level 1. Let me know what you think. As for his radio sounds or cheek to cheek, we can have another group decision.I might not be able to make these changes for a couple of days, and I also need to know how you feel about all yours and my recommendations / changes, but I will start soon. I think it would be nice to start thinking about creating some intro screens too. Something similar to CoC Dcote would be nice. E.g. "Call of Cthulhu: The Lurking Fear". Would you like this pleasure, or should I give it a go? Werian, if you would like to do it let us know.I keep forgetting to say that the level .exe I keep posting is rendered on the lowest settings, so it should look better in the final version.P.S. What do you mean 'I think we have a starry sky now'? Are you reffering to the skybox, which is a night-time sky?P.P.S Who turned the radio on indeed...

The rains are good but I would prefer a song to the white noises.I think it would be nice to start thinking about creating some intro screens too.Drawing pictures? That I can not.But we can outsource the problem . We could ask artists on internet to give us permission to use their work.Check these out:http://browse.deviantart.com/?qh=§ion=&q=cthulhuHere is an unauthorized attempt:http://img211.imageshack.us/img211/9207/loadingscreen.jpgWhat do you mean 'I think we have a starry sky now'? Are you reffering to the skybox, which is a night-time sky?Yes, I thought it wasn't there before.

I will incorporate some aspects of the model pack, giving proper credit of course, and post up an .exeWe will use Werian's rain sounds then, but I will use Cheek to Cheek for the radio.the artwork is great, and I really like your 'unauthorised' attempt. We can use the CoC Dcote font though. I have extracted it before from a still of the Coc Dcote title screen. Okay when I say 'font' what I really mean is that I have extracted the words "Call of Cthulhu" from the title screen, before. When I get chance I will do it again/check to see if I still have it. Nyarla, since you found the artwork, could you contact prospective artists to get their permission please? I dont think we should have one of Cthulhu though, since, as far as I am aware, he is not going to feature in the game (except in maybe a minor way?)The starry sky was there all the time!I have started to build the new .exe, and actually your specification is looking better than mine, but I will produce two rooms, and we can all decide together.Werian: I take it you are reading all this and are cool with it?Its great that things are progressing! :)

Yes, of course. I think that new rooms are great, and I'm waiting for news from "game studio" :] If you need some sounds or samples, please, write here, I subscribe this topic so I'm always here when someone add new post.PS. Chris, if you need someone to help you with building new areas, I would like do it, I have already FPSC with the most important models packs. :cthulhu:

Yes please, it would be good if you could help me build the level(s).I am just finishing a new 'mock up' of the intro level, which has two (or maybe three) rooms from which we will choose JUST ONE for the final intro. I may need some coding help Werian, are you able to code in FPSC?Otherwise, would you like to take on some of the load of building the next two levels? Level 2 is the mansion, and level 3 is beneath the mansion. What will happen, and what has already happened, is that Nyarla will draw a floorplan, whith our input, and then we can start building a level. Levels 2 and 3 will of course be different from level 1 (the intro level) because for one thing, they will be the main game proper, but also because they will have multiple rooms, with objects and enemies etc. So there should be a lot more work at the planning stage, so if you can help build the levels that would be good!If you want I can send you the .fpm and the files from the current version of level 1 and you can try and input them into FPSC?Incidentally, which model packs do you have?

Nyarla/Werian:The next .exe of the intro level. 3 rooms of which we need to decide on JUST ONE. I prefer the middle one, but what do you think? We can merge different features of each room into one, but there does need to be just one at the end. Let me know which one you both prefer, or what features you would like to have in the final room.http://www.sendspace.com/file/7hs39aAll:If you have not yet downloaded this level, please do so. the .zip folder contains a .exe compatible under XP (possibly Vista), let us know your comments.Cheers,Chris.

About the current version of the intro map:My favourite is rightmost room. The left one is too empty, the middle one is too cozy, with that sofa. The table with the chairs gives the rightmost room an oldies aura while the other two could be anywhere in the 20th century.About the pictures on the wall:They look a bit like posters but the room is still better with them. Can we change the sound of the fire place? I think it could be improved.I've contacted an artist through deviantart.com about Martense family member models and I would like to know what version of FPSC are you using and how much polygons should a model be comprised of?http://skullbeast.deviantart.com/art/Martense-89-102621612

I think it would be a good idea, to reduce the number of paintings. Maybe just keep the one of the nightmare, and the one of saturn.regarding the sound of the fire, what did you have in mind?I am using 1.13. I have the upgrade to 1.14 and will install it (just have not got round to it yet). I dont know if there is a set number of polygons that a model should be comprised of, but I suppose the fewer the better, dependent upon how good the model looks. I have looked at the link of the Martense, it looks good, but probably too many polygons. Was it made in Zbrush?Werian: Would you be able to do a new fire sound? Depending on what Nyarla has in mind? Also which room/features of the rooms do you like?Chris.

Greetings-I have just joined this forum, and I would be delighted to help in creating a fan game!I have been a Lovecraft fan since 1996, and have since dedicated a substantial portion of my library to collecting Lovecraftian/Cthulhoid works of literature.I have an extremely fertile imagination, and I think I would be a valuable part of any development team.If you think I could be of assistance, my contact addy is the following:barkingfrogy2k@yahoo.comLook forward to hearing from you!

Nyarla: The fire sound sounds good, I can add it to the level - Werian how do you feel about it?The Observer: it would be great for you to join us. There is three of us so far - myself (Chris Morgan), Nyarla, and Werian - you would make the fourth. If you would like to join though, can you keep contact through posts in this forum. There are several reasons for this. It makes all our work available to others through this forum, it helps keep this forum (or at least this thread) going, it means that we do not need to set up websites and all the work that is required to do that, it encourages others to get involved becasue they can post stright to this thread, and many other reasons. Your help is gratefully accepted. Could you have a quick read through the previous posts, and then download the latest version of the level demo? This will familiarise you, with what has happened so far. The link for the current version of the level is about four posts up. I keeping meaning to put together a development document, to detail our progress, but as I am often quite undisciplined, I have not quite got round to it yet. The roles we play are not set in stone, so feel free to contribute in any way you like. The only thing I would ask though is that we do things by group decision, so that no one person can monopolise the development process. Do you feel you have any particular way in which you would like to get involved?Nyarla/Werian: Are you happy that has been said so far? All: I am working on ANOTHER (arrgh!) version of the demo level - two rooms, both with a table and a fireplace - however if you Werian and you The Observer have any comments about rooms/features you like from the previous demo level, let me know as soon as possible please.Cheers,Chris.

Forgive me Chris, but I don't have enough time (last days) to write here what I think about your new version of intro level :/ Now I see that you can make some new items for first room, the bookcaseslooks brilliant! In my opinion rooms number 1 and 3 are the bests, second room have some strange atmospheric. I have already FPSC with Model Packs 1,2,3,5,9 and 10 (and some "horror pack"), but I can't make such items like you Chris, I really don't have programs for this job and I think that my skills are not so amazing as yours. Obviously I can help you with creating some segments of the buildings or other things.nyarla: This fire sound is very nice, I really like it. Probably I don't find anything better :)Hi The Observer! :cthulhu:

Kabukiman: What is the exact wording of the error report you get when you try to open the .exe file?Werian/All: I must be clear - I DID NOT MAKE ANY MODELS WE ARE USING IN THE GAME (at least not yet), they are all from model packs. The bookcases belong to a pack created by Cosmic Prophet. The only thing I have created, is the texture for the walls, and the paintings on the walls. But I created these using an excellent program called Firma as created by Darkfoil. It helps you create segments, floors, walls and signs. It is free to d/l Werian if want it. The link is below:http://www.fps-files.com/index.php?site=files&cat=13Please dont give me credit, besides I think both our skills, once we practice, will be excellent! :) Both you and Nyarla like the third room (fireplace and table) which is good as I have created another version (hopefully the penultimate one) of the level, with two rooms, both with a fireplace and table - with the radio playing and your rain sounds at the window! When I post it we can all choose which is best and then finalise it.All/Werian/Nyarla/The Observer/myself: Any help you can give and work you can do, will always be accepted and appreciated - I personally think it is great that people want to get involved. So lets have fun making this game - short and sweet though it may be.I will post the new level soon.Chris.P.S. Werian, I only have model packs 1-5, whats in 9 & 10?
