Dragon priest masks: Gain or vain?

Post » Wed Jun 06, 2012 7:41 am

Personally I only have one more mask to obtain.

To begin with I just did it as entertainment and because of the fact that some of the masks got som pretty sweet stats.

Why do you guys collect them, if at all?
Are they just plain achivement or does the final mask open anything questwise?

Once you have all the masks, you can unlock a quest to acquire an even more powerful mask.

Once you find the other one, go to Labyrinthinian and check out on of the buildings there.

Wow, I hadn't even considered that there'd be a quest for all of them! Time to fire up my old mage save ^_^

Yeah it's an quest that's not listed anywhere. Once you collect all the masks, you get an even more powerful mask that, among other things, can summon a Dragon Priest to completely devour your enemies whole. It's a quest that spans the length of the game though, since you need to finish the Main Quest to get two, and the College of Winterhold quests to get one. The rest are kinda scattered about, there's eight in total iirc.

As for actually using them as armor, on my first character I inadvertently stumbled upon Dragon Priest high on a mountain at a Dragon Lair, and his mask granted like 20% Lockpicking/20% Alchemy/20% Archery, which for a sneak archer was like YEEEEEAH at early levels.

I started out using them a lot but late in the game they're not needed, especially when you've got double enchantments. I still use volsung for extended underwater exploration and because it still saves me carry space but that's about it. Konharik is an awesome mask to be sure but I prefer my circlet/falmer helmet combo which is like 4 enchantments stacked together.

The Super-reward mask has limited value, since it mostly activates when you're of low health. So for the more powerful characters (Which by the time you can survive every priest - you will be), you basically have to let enemies beat on you and hope the "Small chance of" things actually do what they're supposed to. Otherwise you're setting yourself up for death.

That mask is possibly the most powerful headpiece in the game. More powerful than any enchantment you can craft.

I also like http://elderscrolls.wikia.com/wiki/Nahkriin, http://elderscrolls.wikia.com/wiki/Otar_the_Mad, http://elderscrolls.wikia.com/wiki/Vokun.

Yeah, but that's not legit.

Says who....? Even one piece of headgear with double enchants is better than Konahrik quite honestly. Especially since the mask effect is random and only kicks in at a situation where you would be better off just drinking a potion anyway.

Well, the helm + circlet combo is a glitch. At some point it's likely to get patched out.

I use the Vokun one until I get the corresponding enchants. ...but mainly I collect them as trophies.

Thanks for the unwanted spoiler! :o Why isn't this in the...oh, it is...NVM.

Wouldn't it be best to give it to a follower? Does it work for them?

This would actually be a pretty good idea. The only thing your follower could equip (helmet-wise) to replace it would be a Daedric Helmet.

I do store the ones I find on the statues, but I have never tried to get all of them. My current character has done the most exploring and he only has 4 of them.

Like other things in the game (the stones) you have to join every faction in the game to find them all, and since I role-play and can never justify any one character ever doing everything, I imagine I will never get all of them.

Zaria wonder if her ear and nose rings are legit, guess so as the guards has not stopped her.
The stupid masks don't fit Khajiit well anyway
But they are fun to collect.

Volsung is pretty handy early in the game. It's got waterbreathing, 20% better prices, and +20 carry weight.

Other than that one, I've never used any of the others. But I still got all 10 masks. They are cool to display.

Where do you display them? Is it a PC mod? One of the reasons I've never made them a high priority is because they just end up in a dresser drawer. Their effects are fine but don't always match what my character does, so they're often not very useful. But if I could display them in a house, that would be great.
