1) I've played the game for 1 hour, and I already have:
*Flamethrower
*Laser pistol
*Laser rifle
*40-50 dynamite sticks
What the hell is this? Every game ever made has had a logical progression in weapons. Who rolls a D&D character with a sword of sharpness on the sheet before you even start? What kind of game gives you these weapons so early on? It's very poor game design.
I don't see the problem.
1: The flamethrower is quite weak early-on, and ammo is quite hard to find. I didn't start running into a regular supply of the stuff until halfway through the game.
2. Laser Pistol is pathetically underpowered. You can't even easily kill a bloatfly with it. Plus, ammo is highly scarce.
3. Same problems as with the pistol. Energy weapons seem to rely on crits to be effective this time around. High crit chance? High destruction. No crit chance? Useless.
4. Again they're useless early on. They do very little damage. Explosives in this game are something you need to plan for if you want them to be devastating.
2) Mob difficulty is based on two parameters: Their damage output & their hitpoints.
This is SERIOUSLY poor game design, and very much lacking in innovation and shows a complete lack of ideas by the game creators.
I just met my first rad scorpion. The fight consists of backing up (you move _exactly_ as quickly as the mob), and shooting it 100 times in the head. How is this intelligent game design? What's entertaining about this?
I met another scorpion.. The exact same method was required, because you cannot drop these creatures with a 9mm pistol or a varmint rifle before they reach you.
You honestly expect a 9MM Parabellum to go through the carapace of a scorpion the size of a small hatchback?! If one of these things existed in real life you'd still need a pretty high caliber rifle to take one down. The carapace would laugh off most pistol rounds, and some rifle rounds. That dinky little .223? It ain't got enough powder. It will either embed harmlessly in the carapace, or it will just bounce right off. There just isn't enough mass behind it to punch through, and even if it did it's such a tiny little round it won't do any damage once it gets inside.
If you're taking on something that size, think of what you would want to use if you were trying to take out a bull elephant in real life. Would you reach for your Beretta or your M82?
