Enchanting, Smithing (and Alchemy) Need to be Easier to leve

Post » Mon May 28, 2012 9:11 am

no. I'm sorry, just no. after you get a few hundred hours in come on back. This game is So watered down and yet people want to thin it down ever MORE?

Also, you thinking I'm a World of Warcraft player is nice and all, But I can tell you this. I play(ed) Guild Wars. WoW has never, nor will EVER be in my Resume of games played.

and no @ your above post.

you are taking things waaay waaaay waaay out of context. play the game

+200 hours thanks, my point is the same, it's not a "competitive" MMO, but a single player experience to take as you go

EDIT: also how do you think making the 500 hours you say is necessary to hit level 100 naturally for smithing into maybe 150 or 200 hours (one char mind you) "watering down"?

I'm going to let you in on something. They are very easy to level. In fact, so easy it's almost game-breaking.

archery will take you some time..but it is about as balanced as it should be. (just about the only skill that scales well, that I've encountered)

I'm not into power leveling but how are you guys raising alchemy so fast? :bonk:

Mine is leveling at a snails pace even with giants toe and wheat potions (which is a slow process in its self, waiting 2 months for them to respawn and/or relying on luck if a vendor stocks any). Is there an easy more expensive potion out there or something?

If it were up to me, I'd make all three much faster to level. However, progression would be capped until certain quests were completed. Heck, I'd almost rather see it entirely quest-based instead of grinding out armor, enchanting it, and then trying to find a vendor with enough cash to buy my goods.

One thing I'd like to see in the next TES game is the ability to open my own shop, hire employees and stock it with my own goods.

Of all crafting skills, Alchemy is the one that needs the most relaxing because it is the hardest to level.

So one thing Ive been thinking on is how much more relaxed the leveling system is this time, there really isn't a reason to not level, unless you wanna buy some trainer points, but one thing that bugs me is how tedious smithing, enchanting and to a lesser extent (because you use it much more) alchemy is to level. Right now I counted (using the Warrior Stone) around 6-11 Iron daggers (scaling from level 30 to 100) per level needed to raise it. Being that if I'm just playing "Naturally" unless I have some ore and leather Im not going to improve or smith something more than say 20-50 times a game, so if I want to benefit from 100 something I need to power level it, if I want to stay balanced I need to do it in increments ie up to level 50 until Im level 30 then 70 until 40 then 100 until I make a new char. Im not saying you should get 1 level every iron dagger but lessening it would both make it more clearly marked as a skill to level as you go and would make it probable to level to 100 just playing "laissez-faire"

I like the current leveling. if u dont fasttravel to get new resources to powerlevel, smithing is decent. You need lot work till you master it. If you want to play the game like real RPG, and you just buy the raw materials (or even mining it), then you smelt it, then you craft, you will level slow. If u want to power level, you fast travel, buy stuff, craft, fast travel ... till youre at 100.
In this game you are able to do almost anything as you wish. HC players can get to 100 in 1-2 hour, normal players can hang around game for days and playing playing what real smiths would do. Many ppl just like to powerlevel any skills (what is wrong imo, i think its lame MMOstyle where you need to grind), decent players want to live the game as intended. But, they made the game so great, that any kind of player can play their style.

I've given my crafted items away after vendors run out of gold (weight/inventory clearing)..and guess what? the game is that watered down for this new generation, It STILL levels up..Speech perk, IIRC.

I don't play MMOs, but why shouldn't SP CRPGs be balanced or make sense? I don't have a problem with grinding as long as it makes sense. But here, crafting low level iron daggers to master smithing just doesn't make any sense at all. The resulting price of the item should be the basis of how much you skill up. For one XP points at high levels, 10000 iron daggers or 10 daedric warhammers - your choice. We can still grind it as much as we like, but in a way that actually makes sense to how skill experience works in real life.

I'm sorry, I just can't see those three skills getting much easier to lvl. All you have to do for smithing is fight a bit, sell a bit, collect some ore and ingots from around Skyrim, put them in a safe place: I.E chest in house and wait till you get money. Go to smith in Whiterun and buy what you need from the two of them plus what you have in your chest, rinse and repeat. I don't consider that a cheat since I honestly earned the money the correct way. Smithing will be maxed in a matter of minutes if you pick the right object to make.
Enchanting is the same except you go to a mage to buy instead of a smith.
Alchemy....guess what, is the same way except you go to a crazy person who always tells you your sick when you talk to her. In less than a couple of hours they are maxed.
And no, I was not trying to power lvl, break the game or anything as I was already lvl 43 when I started doing all this.

Some of the best I've found is Giants Toe + Wheat, Frost Mirriam + Purple Mt Flower, Chorrus Egg (or Ice Wraith Teeth) + Vamp Dust. The more expensive the potion, the more XP. Pots that sell for <100 gold are nearly useless to level on.

Well played OP, well played.

Also those who toss around terms like "gamebreaking" and "exploit". It's a single player game, if you can't show restraint, it's your fault, not the developer's.

I'd hate to see your comments back when IDDQD was a thing.

I knew it would be a hard tide to fight before I posted, sometimes people get stuck in the mentality and start seeing it as something they "must do" in the game, and it was somewhat necessary in previous games but Skyrim has a new standard in relaxed, casual playing as-it-goes I think everyone needs to adjust to

thanks for the support

Its just bad game design. Its ridicilous to blame the player for braking hes gaming experience by making some obvious choices. "Its a single player game" is not an excuse. Its like they put a huge chest in front of you and put 100 000gold in it. Who thinks about leaving it there because they think the fun will end if they take it. What other game gives you the option to make the best stuff before you even reach 1/3 of the level cap? It makes no sense. Why should i play like an idiot just becase im afraid my game will become too easy.

It isn't bad game design at all. Like I said in another post:

"TES has always been a reflection of real life set to a fantasy background. And just like in real life, some decisions will either gimp you for life (do nothing but smoke oxycontins), while others will give you an "unfair" advantage over others(becoming a pharmacologist and selling the oxycontin)."

If the decisions YOU are making are ruining YOUR fun, then make different decisions.

Frankly why even play he game if you want it more easy then it is. What is the matter with people always wanting something fast. Even if you don't have the amount of hrs then some people can no reason to make it easier. If you really like the game going along slow is more fun then to race through everything. You play the game to enjoy it. If you want that type of game go play pinball you have your results very fast lol.

I'm truly sorry for you OP if you can't figure out how to be successful in this game and need it watered down just a little more. That goes for the populace, not just the OP.

Some more to try (sorted by price as listed in the Prima guide):
Max Stamina = Garlic + Lavender
Health Regen = Garlic + Vampire Dust
Magicka Regen = Garlic + Salt Pile
Stamina Regen = Fly Amanita + Mora Tapinella
Damage Magicka Regen = Blue Mtn Flower + Chicken's Egg (or Hanging Moss)
Damage Magicka = Spider Egg + Wheat (or Hanging Moss)
Max Health = Blue Mtn Flower + Glowing Mushroom (or Hanging Moss, Wheat)
Damage Stamina = Bone Meal + Chicken's Egg (or Spider Egg, Wheat)

This is why I use a skill slowdown mod.
God forbid you want to be a jeweler or a smith without leveling up the wazoo.
The smith skill should be like the alchemy skill: Level xp should be determined by the item's value. Crafting cheap daggers should give you very little.

You still haven't addressed my point, if you need 222 hours to hit level 65, which would make 500 hours more or less for level 100, how in any way am I wanting the game "watered down" for say 200 or 300 hours to reach level 100 smithing? especially since it is all relatively the same thing, not more or less content

do you understand the cultural definition of "watering down"? or are you just using a hot topic word because its said alot?

@skeldark- how is 200-300 hours going through the game "fast"?

@varek-I agree-smithing daggers should get you a relatively smaller amount of xp in comparison to larger, more expensive items

Just to be clear i havent power leveled anything. I explore dungeons until i cant carry anymore loot on me. I return to Whiterun to sell the stuff. The merchants have only like 500gold so naturally i buy stuff off them so they get more cash. Usually i buy their ignots and ores. So i level up my smithing with those. Im sorry but for me this is obvious behaviour not power leveling. At least i dont feel like im forcing anything. The merchants always have 500 gold and the same stuff to sell when i return. Is it wrong that i want Dragonbone armor when i can see the perk to make it right there in the skill tree from day one? Naturally i make that a goal when i decided to smith anyway and i have tons of scales and bones stored in my house. Im sorry but i dont see the power leveling. Its just too easy.
