[RELz] English Strings for Skyrim

Post » Thu May 24, 2012 9:41 pm

Sorry for the double post, but that last post by me was a while ago now.

Just putting it out there that once the v1.4 patch is released by Bethesda I intend to make an optional download with the patch's updated string files in it, modified as per the main mod. If the v1.4 beta is anything to go by there seem to be enough changes in it to warrant it as it overrides some of the changes I've made in the base string files. I'll also mark the optional file with the exact version number of the game it's for.

Thanks Seraphiel. If you feel like making it for the beta, the final is unlikely to change more strings, so you could upload it sooner...

Just sayin' :)

I actually have just made the modifications to my own "Update_English" files, mainly to test what happens when the game tries to update the same files. I'd rather that the game update spits the dummy with my game rather than anyone elses. The patch should be released in the next two days or so - any longer than that and I'll upload it as is.

In case I would still want to go back to "Dwarven" instead of "Dwemer", do you think a simple "Search & Replace" operation with notepad would do the trick?

Definitely grabbing! (See location!)

Dwarven to dwemer is great too, now can you go through and change all the voice files similarly? :bolt:
I flippently said this as a joke, but the wierd thing is, there's no neeed :shocking:
NPCs actually seem to refer to them as Dwemer anyway and http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Skyrim:Jenassa gives you a shpeel about how they;re actually called dwemmer, not dwarves and were normal height. Peryite called them Dweeeeeemer tho. Have a word!

Alas, it's not quite that simple. But if you have a Strings coder/decoder then yes, it is quite doable if you're careful. Although it's probably just as easy to use this as the base and then use the CK to edit the items since plugins override the Strings text. There are a lot of fixes to the vanilla text in this mod as well, so it's not a bad thing to have this as a base for your game.

If you don't know, the DLSTRINGS file holds the book & most quest text, the ILSTRINGS are the subtitles and the STRINGS file holds NPC and item names, as well as some quest text.

Given the amount of bug fixes you have here, would you consider making a version of just the bug fixes (i.e. without the Queen's English changes, but leaving the Dwemer and the 'official' names rather than generic in place) and pass it off to Kivan for the Unofficial Skyrim Patch?

I've been keeping an eye on Kivan's Unofficial Patch as I myself have used his Unofficial Patches in the past. He seems to have picked up most (if not all) of the bugs I have found myself thanks to him having set up a way for people to report bugs directly to him. His is a far wider reaching mod than mine, but yeah the two eclipse in part. Alas, removing the language changes I've made in my mod would probably be more work for him than just keeping on with how he's already doing it. The thought did cross my mind too at one point.

Warning everyone using this mod: I just had Steam verify the integrity of my game cache. So it did and it replaced the english strings by the original ones. I had to re-install the mod strings and translation files in the interface and strings folders afterwards.

Thanks for the heads-up on this. I'll add a note about it in the readme.

You're welcome! :)

I have a question: in my game the mammoth snout is called "fresh meat". Does that come from your mod?

No, it doesn't. None of the food names have been touched in my mod.

being american, the European English spelling bothers me (much how american english seems to bother you); however, i do like your other changes. any chance of making the dwemer and racial name changes a separate file?

Being that I am american, it has given me pause as to why the spelling differences does not bother me... I have no familial ties to anyone whose lexicon is grounded in classic english. Perhaps since I am bilinguial my brain does not directly tie the understanding a word imparts to any specific word?

Being that I dated a Canadian for some time, a wild u appears in my words from time to time. In fact, I prefer the European spellings for some reason. This one's getting downloaded!

Hi,

I don't know if I must report this to you or anyone else, so I begin with you. Here is a screencap of a book I just read: http://pix.toile-libre.org/upload/original/1331326386.jpg. Please, take a look on the right page, the line "The mercenary Grin?...", the weird characters at the end of it. Do you have any idea where this comes from?

Well spotted! That does indeed come from my mod. Did a quick search for other instances of it and it appears that that is the only one (other than the french/italian/spanish book titles that don't appear in game). It will be fixed in the next version (v2.0.9) which I hope to release today or tomorrow.

Hi,

It's me again. Could this be a result of your mod?

Don't be sorry about finding possible bugs. I welcome any help in locating possible issues.

I don't think that this one is a result of my mod, though. Here's the text as it is in my mod:

,

In the name of Jarl , it is with great regret that we inform you of 's death.

The deceased has bequeathed unto you a measure of inheritance in the amount of gold pieces.

The Jarl's court has levied an amount of gold pieces from the sum, as the lawfully and honourably due tax. The remainder has been commended unto the care of a trusted courier for deliverance.

While all of the Jarl's court grieves with you on this day, we rejoice in the knowledge that the deceased was in possession of dear friends and wealth to communicate unto them.

May this lawfully bestowed inheritance prove as a reminder of your enduring faith in one another, and of the Jarl's beneficence accorded unto you both.

It looks like the variables aren't being found by your game for some reason, although it finds the player's name okay. To be sure I'll test this out myself in my game asap.

Edit: I get the same bug both with and without my mod. I did a search on it and other PC players are finding this bug as well - one guy had just reinstalled the game with no mods and had the same bug. So it appears to be a new v1.4 vanilla bug.

The same bug can also be seen in the Courier's Letter and is mentioned in the http://www.gamesas.com/topic/1342935-unofficial-buglist/page__view__findpost__p__20450018.
