Everybody so open to Homosixuality

Post » Sun Mar 06, 2011 11:19 am

Yes, I'm so damn homophobic for noticing that this game lack's one of man's inherent flaws.

Not as inherent as you think it is. Lots of the rest of the world is more open about it than the US. Though some parts are also less open. There's a distinct cultural component.

I actually had the exact opposite reaction. I picked the Confirmed Bachelor and Lady Killer perks for my male PC because I just pick all the dialog perks. First opportunity to use Confirmed Bachelor was with a dude who told me to keep interest in "friendship" on the down-low. He made a specific point that Caesar's Legion is more cool with dudes being "friends" than certain other outfits in the area.

I was impressed that not only do they let you be gay/bi, and let you talk to folks who are, but they also recognize that there's a range of responses to it -- from being in the closet to being more vocally out.

One of my favorite things about this game. Confirmed Bachelor was the first perk I chose for my first character.

I just wish it had been more useful, not less!

I understand. I never said homosixuallity is as taboo as it used to be.

But please, if you are honestly going to tell me that it doesn't have a stigma in many different communities, then I really don't know what world you're in.

Not in many, no. Lots of places don't, but that's for another thread. The same argument has been said about racism being inherent (something about the evolutionary instinct to hate/fear those that don't look like us), but I like the fact that that is seen to have been practically erased in Fallout (apart from Ghouls maybe, I suppose). There will always be stigma attached to someone, but it doesn't always have to be the same people, as history as shown.

The way I see it, It would of caused more of a fuss if they kept the homosixuality on the down-low..
Obviously, many 'gay' people DO game (Well duh), and it better to put it out there. It's great to see that Obsidian doesn't discriminate against anyone. Bassically, what I'm trying to explain horribly, is that if they kept it hidden out, They would just be doing what every other game did. The Fallout universe seems to have gotten over peoples sixual preferences, but it's a shame most of us in the real world can't.

Not when eight out of ten are dead from apocalyptic war.

Theoretically, it could have been 8 heterosixuals out of every 10 people who died in the Great War. Then the percentages could make it 50/50 for gay or straight. :)

Since it's in the future, bigotry should have been ancient history. Unfortunately, it wasn't so with Ghouls.

This all sounds vaguely homophobic to me.

Oh good, then it's not just me.

So flash forward a couple hundred years and it will be less taboo as it already is in whole states. Like I said, here in Rhode Island we just elected an openly gay Governor. Obviously that wouldn't happen everywhere but it would happen in just about every big city in America today. I don't see the smattering of openly gay characters in NV to be unrealistic at all.

Bigotry.

In FO lore the BoS are pretty homophobic. I haven't dealt with them in this game yet so I don't know if that comes through.

In fact, there is virtually no human prejudice at all in this game

Yes there is, try playing a girl in the Caesar's Legion camp before you say that. :P

What comes through for me is that they want power back and want to preserve the past. Maybe they mean bigotry too, I don't know.

To be honest, as much as I dislike homosixuality, I like that only 2 characters are 'cliches'. That one guy Jimmy in Westside, and the butchy manly chick at McCarran whos name begins with a B. Arcade is my favorite companion, because he's gay, but he isnt that obnoxious flip wrist gay. I'm glad they made near all of them just normal average people. It shows not all gay/lisbian people are the feminine men/masculine women portrayed in alot of common media (apart from Jimmy and the McCarran woman)

It's hard to know how to respond to the OPs post, I've gone through the entire game without giving it a second thought, Veronica tells my character about her lost love, the only thought I had on that was perhaps there was a side quest to find her and reunite them or something more tragic, but thoughts on sixual preference never came into it, as for being "so open" about it, I guess there is something in that, after all, heterosixuals don't go around blurting out their sixual preference.

hmm... the gay characters in NV don't bother me, but this thread does. It's one step away from "the sheriff of Megaton is black! omg! how unrealistic is that! shock!".

come on. grow up a bit. It's not as if you (as a guy) are walking around and Arcade's voice keeps saying "nice ass there" is it? It's buried away, in a few sentences.

No offence...

I feel like the homosixual characters in this game are almost comical at times... I swear to God, I wanted to punch this doctor in the face because every damn time I talked to him he would hit on me...

Nope, no homophobia to be seen here.

Perhaps you protest too much?

They handle it very well in this game if you ask me. It's only brought up as a minor detail of people's personalities which is what sixuality is. Gannon mentions it explicitly twice, Veronica in one conversation, and it's brought up with Betsy because her behaviour is inappropriate in the military discipline sense. That's pretty much it. Not in your face or whitewashed over like most games.

What I don't like is how some people are equating sixuality as a lifestyle choice one can turn off at will. It doesn't work like that, it's no different from being straight in terms of how you are attracted to people or fall in love. That's as much as I'm saying on the matter lest I be banhammered.

Well, they definitely have a "racial purity" vibe to them. They keep all relationships inside the BoS because they consider themselves the last "pure" humans. They've had a history with the Mutants obviously and they have openly spoke out against homosixuality in FO2 if I remember correctly.

I wonder if there's any interactions that are different if you bring either of the two gay companions to them? Any experience with that when you encountered them?

Yes they do - there's a SQ to find out what happened to a guy's wife, there's the Doc at Goodsprings who talks about his wife etc. We just don't register it as "blurting out their sixual preference" as it is usually unconsciously denoted as straight until someone says otherwise, in which case it registers as a confirmation of someone's sixuality.

I don't know that they're homophobic, but homosixuality is contrary to their doctrine. The only way their organization expands and continues is through the breeding of its members. Homosixual couplings can't do that. In a way their objection is a very practical, if emotionally detached.

Uh, I don't know what circles you walk in but in mine homosixuality is absolutely openly discussed and I know no homosixuals who aren't extremely open and obvious about it. I mean, maybe if you don't live in a major metropolitan area you wouldn't be used it but every city I've ever lived in NY, LA and now Providence, RI it's extremely open. Hell, we just elected an openly gay governor who prior to that was mayor of Providence.

I've lived in Los Angeles for the last 20 years and I don't agree with this statement. Sure, if you go to west LA you will find homosixual couples walking the street... But they are all in one concentrated area. As soon as you drive over a one mile radius then you don't seen that blatant homosixuality.

The way they did Arcade is cool, he is more realistic because he isn't so open about it. Or the homosixual prosttute in westside. But the others in the game, get a swift shotgun to the face.

Exactly! People are more concerned with survival than "teh gay." Seriously people, how is this a problem for you? How homophobic do you have to be to complain about references to homosixual characters in a game that depicts characters in bdsn outfits and black nipble tape?

/Rant

This argument is automatically debunked due to the fact that ghouls are discriminated against.

Besides, wouldn't prejudice be at its HIGHEST when someone is concerned with survival? A person's instincts tell them who to trust, and as man naturally behaves, they will hate those who are different. Couple this with poor or lack of education as well as general ignorance to much of the world, it seems comical how the Mojave is some giant politically correct wonderland.

His argument became invalid because it isnt that Arcade isn't open about his sixuality, it's that he isn't open about anything.
