Expecting appology

Post » Sun Mar 06, 2011 4:55 am

As a fan of the previous version of Fallout like most of you, I got New Vegas with high expectations. As I progressed further throughout the game on my PS3, instead of being able to immerse myself into the game, I was finding myself concentrating more on the flaws and glitches.

To start, assuming the creators built New Vegas on a previous built engine and models, it would seem that the world would be bigger, more elaborate, and with an environment that you can almost fully interact. However, half the buildings in the towns are boarded up and invisible walls (not the terrain) keep you from entering parts of the world that are unobtainable. I do not want to speculate why certain areas are unobtainable, but considering the tools made available by Fallout 3 I would expect an improvement not just in this area but overall. New Vegas feels more like playing the previous version that Fallout 3 was built on, instead of vice versa.

I could continue on, on other various components of the game, but I came to this website to see what was being done regarding all the complaints I’ve heard and read about, only to see on the first page a bunch of reviews averaging New Vegas has a 90% gaming score. I’m not being tonal and I want Bethesda to be one of the brands I look at in games with high standards that produce quality goods and stand by their name.

When I was playing Oblivion an older Bethesda game, I was a little miffed that once you got a high enough character there was a chance the game would glitch making it unplayable for that character. However, probably only 10% of the gamers or so were affected by this (sadly it was the hardcoe gamers,) but I could see where it might not be feasible to fix the issue.

I would really like to hold Bethesda in high regards in the gaming community and would hate to see no more midnight releases of their titles due to corporate economic reasoning. The bottom line is important, but as many have forgot so is how you get there. Figuratively, do you really want to hold out a C paper and say we put our best foot forward?

<_< in your entire rant these are the only two actual complaints you make... it's hard to know exactly what you think is wrong because these particular are fairly minor. Definitely not enough to demand an apology. The first complaint implies a lack of content (New Vegas definitely does not lack content) the second is just an (annoying) shortcut on the part of developers instead of making a series of thin in-game excuses to keep you from leaving the playable map.

(IMO, they should just do with the map what Oscuro did with Oblivion.. no invisible barriers, but the map just stops having content after a while, and after a much longer time repeats endlessly)

The game is great when "Tremor" scorpions are not attacking your feet and quests are bugged so you can not complete them..... unfortunately I seem to always encounter those flaws every time I make a new character.

Whoah, wait, is this a recent feature of OOO, or was it there all along? I don't want to derail the topic, so PM me or whatever. It sounds intriguing.

Obsidian made the game.
Don't know why people are so scared to say it.

Not that I don't think it's a great game by the way..

First off- direct all complaints about Fallout: New Vegas to Obsidian. They're the guys who made it; Bethesda only signed the checks and promoted the game. Obsidian created the whole thing, aside from reusing stock meshes/textures/sound from Fallout 3. In fact, that might be why you're having issues with it; the Bethesda team has had far more practice with their Editor, while Obsidian got, at most, a year to 18 months to play with it. Considering that Bethesda worked on some form of the editor since at least 2001....

Second off- this is why we get Bethesda titles for PC- ever since they released Morrowind with the TES Construction set, any game using the Gamebryo Engine they've released has had one. Your issues with it are bound to be solved by the modding community at large, if not by Obsidian's patches. As you're on the PS3, you won't be able to enjoy mods. And no, that's not Bethesda's fault, either. Microsoft and Sony don't like 3rd-party mods in their consoles; at least those that aren't a major feature of the game itself or a mission map editor. And trust me, Calling the GECK a Map Editor is like calling a Hummer a Compact Car.

That's not to say Bethesda is flawless. Because of the GECK/Editor, far too often we pick up after Bethesda (such as the nearly-unplayable Mothership Zeta DLC, or the horrid release that was Oblivion translated in German.) Bethesda fixes the gamebreaking stuff (Such as the inability of Oblivion to reuse formID's, causing a crash within 40 hours after SI was installed) while we deal with the moderate-to-severe stuff (such as fixing the reason why Oblivion crashed in 40 hours after SI was installed- a case of mass cloning random loot in Golden Saints.) And usually there's 1 or 2 gamebreaking stuff while there's massive amounts of "moderate-to-severe" stuff. Fortuantly, the gamebreaking stuff (usually) can't be solved by tweaks in the editor, otherwise a patch from Bethesda would be like looking for a honest politician...

Expecting an apology won't do you much good; it's bad for PR and corporations, unless they (for example) caused the largest oil disaster on record, will rarely take the blame. That doesn't mean they don't attempt to fix it- Oblivion modified what caused issues in Morrowind, and Fallout 3 modified what caused issues in Oblivion. And that's how we know they listen to us; rather than give us the same crap game after game, they try to do better. And most of the time, it works... So, if NV is bad, the next tile will be better. After all, NV did something that Fallout 3 didn't do; it seems to have pleased nearly everyone in the Fallout community, not just us "new guys" who got in after Bethesda got the rights.

The only thing Obsidian owes you is a patch to the game. Same thing they owe the rest of us. They don't owe any of us any sort of apology.

An apology? Oooh. You're beginning to sound like one of my teachers! :P

I get what you mean, and more buildings that could be explored would've been nice, but.... IMO, Obsidian having to decorate all of those building interiors doesn't seem all that time-efficient. And this might just be me, but I don't really play Fallout to get decorating inspiration from wasteland living rooms.

The glitches can be fixed, and I don't think the game itself is bad at all. There's lots of positives to counter the negatives.

Why does everyone blame Bethesda. Obsidian made the game. I'm on PS3, and the game is great. Stop focusing on the negatives, look for a fix for your minor annoyances, and go play it and have fun.

RPG are the most complex game, and hnce are often the most buggiest, bethesda RPG are also the most open world making them buggy when released. Just imagine all the bugs that were fixed before release....arent you glad we didnt get that game?

Nah, I should clarify anyway.. it was there all along, but all OOO does is eliminate the invisible barriers and let you access the creepily huge amount of content-free terrain that the vanilla game had, but prevented you from entering.

Almost the entirety of the Tamriel mainland is represented - including Morrowind. But it's empty, and if you keep following it your character will eventually fall through the world.

As for why New Vegas has invisible barriers.. some of Oscuro's posts on the subject:

:banghead: <----me whenever i run into one of those annoying invisible walls.

I hear ya - I also like being able to jump, climb, and dash around, as unrestricted by boundaries as possible. It's a natural reaction.

Im pretty sure these "Invisible walls" are to keep you from going places your not supposed to go to that early in the game.

That's a good answer, although not entirely accurate. Everyone in the team put a lot of emphasis into making it possible to go anywhere, whenever you want (at your own risk, of course ;)), and still be able to tie things together (quests, for example, if you decide to bolt to the Strip right out of Goodsprings).

The actual purpose of any such barrier is to prevent other more egregious oddities from happening. As you know, creatures, NPCs, and Companions, can try to follow you anywhere... and I mean, anywhere. There are some spots where you, as the Player Character, can easily get to (jump, strafe the side of a steep cliff, etc.) but where creatures, NPCs, or Companions, just can't make it. In cases like this, it's an usual trade-off solution to bound a region with rocks, cliffs, and, yeah, sometimes invisible barriers when there's no other better option.

O.

You can easily edit those barriers out - they are mere collision planes/volumes used to section off areas where navmesh would not work out well (very complex terrain, and ultra-narrow pathways), and to bound the region of the Mojave.

O.

The fact the game, on MOST if not ALL playthroughs cannot be completed 100% thanks to the quests being hopelessly bugged or failing because you talked to an NPC before you got a companion are enough to warrant an apology.

The "lack of content" is not really all people say it is, there are less places, but the places are "deeper" in most cases. They went for depth not breadth.

I don’t personally agree with the OP, but I don’t think this guys ranting, he’s just expressing his piece.

And yeah Obsidian made it, but Beth did still put their name on it and that should, and does, mean they are ultimately responsible for the content. They own the franchise. If you put out a product that doesn’t work, then you owe a fix.

If you drove a new car off the lot and broke right down, would you be satisfied with you purchase?

That said, I really like what they did with NV. Mine works fine and I just hope it stays that way.

I am sick of reading the same complaints about what people don’t like about the game over and over too, but I don’t blame people who are having serious bugs for being pissed. I’ve played a lot of these games so I take the bugs in stride, but that doesn’t necessarily make them ok.

I don't really call New Vegas"open world". There are TONS of invisible walls in the most [censored] of places. The game forces you to take specific routes to certain places, even tho you could look and find at least 5 other ways to get to the same spot. But can't due to invisible walls. If the walls don't annoy you, and they annoy the hell out of me. The PS3 version is glitchy as hell. I've had my game freeze 6-10 times from just walking around the mojave. I'm thinking about taking it back and just getting the PC version. Doesn't make sense the community should have to fix crap for the developers, I would not recommend this for the PS3. Not sure how the 360 version fares.

Where are you getting the 300 figure from? 'Cause I counted the names relating to QA in the credits, and it amounted to twenty people.

The game focuses on quests. Really, when I think about the amount of quests in the game (especially compared to F3) and all the stuff there is to do and the characters, complaints of "invisible walls" seem pretty shallow. You have a right to your opinion of course but don't you enjoy the quests? What did you envision when you bought the game?

If you want the developers to pay attention to your complaints, you have to make them constructive and be specific. Maybe even make a few suggests. I don't think they're going to pay much attention to "I'm so disappointed" and "It's not as good as Fallout 3."

I don't mean just you I mean all those sorts of posts.
