Explosion in Oslo, Norway

Post » Sat Jul 23, 2011 9:48 am

Several people have been injured in a large explosion which has damaged government buildings in central Oslo, including the office of the Norwegian prime minster. [...] The tangled wreckage of a car was outside one building but the cause of the blast was unknown with police and fire officials refusing to comment.

The explosion at around 3.30pm (2.30pm BST) blew out most windows on the 17-storey building housing prime minister Jens Stoltenberg's office, as well as nearby ministries including the oil ministry, which was on fire. [...] Norwegian news agency NTB said the prime minister is safe. Newspaper offices in the area were also reportedly damaged.

Hopefully, this was nothing but an accident, such as a faulty gas pipe. Thankfully, there are no casualties as of yet.

EDIT: As posted by Krigaren eg ikkje kjende, there are at least seven confirmed causalties due to the bombing and four due to a relevant shooting.

EDIT 2: http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/blog/2011/jul/22/oslo-explosion-live-coverage
4.09pm: Oslo police have said the explosion was caused by a bomb, the BBC just said.

The extent of the damage, and the fact that gas lines are uncommon in nordic countries, would suggest it was a deliberate act.

Det er forel?pig ikke mulig ? si hvor mange som er skadd eller omkommet i eksplosjonen. Men politiet bekrefter n? at det er omkomne.

NTB melder at to er bekreftet omkomne.

Sadly, at least two deceased.

There was also an explosion in Sweden apparently. A friend there said he heard it on the radio. Not the explosion, but a report of it ;).

I know there were two bombings in Stockholm in December last year.

Yeah, noone there got hurt, though. Well, except for the suicide bomber who fortunately failed to do his thing to the extreme.

Huh, even nordic countries aren't safe anymore, Though i doubt this had anything to do with international terrorism. Propably just another disturbed individual like in the mall explosion here in Finland some years ago.

Indeed.

There are also reports of a second blast.

You're right. Just outside of Stortinget (parliament).

Det er kommet flere ubekreftede meldinger om at det ogs? skal ha skjedd en voldsom eksplosjon i Stortingsgata, like nedenfor Stortinget, if?lge NTB.

According to NRK (Norwegian Broadcasting Corporation), it's labeled as a most likely a terror act. :(

If these are terrorists, why are they hitting Norway and not Denmark or some other more anti-terrorist country? It seems weird for them to hit Norway.

It must be. At least two explosions, one of them near the parliament. Doesn't sound like coincidence.

They've been going against Sweden (hopefully completely unrelated though) with suicide bombing recently.

Such senseless violence. If you have a point, make it clear. Don't just blow up an important building and leave everyone wondering "what the hell was that for?" On that note, just don't blow up buildings.

On the radio here they said that Norway, too, has a number of troops stationed in Afghanistan, though it still seems strange that the attacks (if of terrorist nature) would come from that area.

Anyway, sad news, hope no one here is affected. Wish people would stop thinking violence solves everything.

Three people were arrested at Gardemoen airport as they were about to leave the country. People have been arrested in the city too. There are speculations about a car bomb since a smashed car was found at the scene of the explosion.

It's possible Norway was seen as an easier target than say the US or UK. Then there's also the fact that Norwegian newspaper reprinted controversial caricatures, but I'll stop there.

The summer holiday also started a few days ago so security was a little looser than it would normally be.

I was thinking that. The confusion is also going to be beneficial to whoever targeted the city. Thankfully, there hasn't been many casualties. Hopefully the rescue operations are successful.
