Fallout - New Vegas Crashing when starting up the game.

Post » Wed Mar 30, 2011 1:56 am

I just got F-NV last night. I installed in and everything, updated my drivers for my card and sound and all that stuff. Steam updated it, and I opened it up.

It goes to the menu page. With "Play" "Options" "Technical Support" etc... I click options to set up my stuff to max, since I run Crysis at 45+FPS, I should be able to max this no problem. I save my options and click "Play". A black screen comes up, since it's in full screen, it loads for about 2 seconds then crashes. Or rather, encounters and error. The normal, "Fallout New Vegas has encountered and error and has stopped working properly." I've done everything I can muster to get this game to work, but to no avail.

One thing I would like to know is why in God's name you would make a good game, then make it pass through a crappy client like Steam. My game isn't working. I feel like I just wasted 30 bucks, and I'd like to get that back. I loved Fallout 3. It still works just fine, but this game ISN'T. It's not working at all. Open, crash, repeat.

Have you tried a clean boot?
clean boot link:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/929135

Just diable everything first and then try it. Verify that apps are indeed disabled. Go into the task manager and msconfig (make sure nonms services are set to stopped or disabled).

I've tried everything. It's just a trashy game that I wasted 30 bucks on. My friend's works just fine. Mine doesn't. I have just about the same PC build as he does. The only difference is he has a six-core CPU, and I have a 4.

Have you tried compatibility mode for windows xp sp3? Seems to work for some.
Re-download your video card drivers from nvidia directly. Try to reinstall them. DO a clean install. There should be a checkbox in the install wizard.

ANother thought you might try disabling the steam overlay as well if you havent tried that already. Steam library->fallout game right click properties and uncheck the checkbox steam community.

Yup. Did CompatMode. I uninstalled my previous drivers and reinstalled them fresh. I even uninstalled Steam and F-NV and reinstalled them fresh.

When I verify the game cache and files, it always tells me "1 files failed to validate and will be reacquired." I read a thread in here by a game dev that actually said to then delete all the .ini files. Now it tells me I'm missing 5 files. I know that's not why the game is refusing to work, though. That's a steam problem.

Just to verify did you try the clean boot and disabling steam overlay?

download the main file and extract into the falloutnv install location. Then execute. All you need is the exe and the helper. It is a .rar file
so you can use winrar or something like that.

I'll try it. I called the hotline to talk to someone about the problem. They told me to install it into Program Files and not Program Files x86. That didn't work either. I'll do this and check back I guess.

Lol, same thing. Just encounters an error and I have to close it. Oh man what a terrible series of events. What a complete waste of money.

getting the exact same problem, crashes as soon as the game engine is enabled. I've verified game cache many times and it constantly brings up "1 files failed to validate and will be reacquired." Then it downloads the exact same 808 byte file every time, but still the exact same crash. Uninstalled the game, reinstalled and still the exact same problem, still the exact same 808 byte download. Probably the .ini file I can't seem to find anywhere and that the tech support gave no instructions on how to find?
I already played the game through a couple of times after it came out and I wasn't getting anywhere near the bugs that most people were complaining about when it was released and therefore championed the game when a lot of people were slagging it. Was going to purchase the DLC but man am I glad I tried to run the game first. Saved me some money. I'm very disappointed that the tech support hasn't fixed this yet, this forum is full of people having the exact same issues.
I'm not using mods and I'm not interested in downloading any new executables or anything like that. The game worked fine through steam and now it's not since the patch that was supposed to fix things but now makes it a game that won't run. It's Bethesda's problem and they don't seem to give a damn about fixing it.

Lol, same thing. Just encounters an error and I have to close it. Oh man what a terrible series of events. What a complete waste of money.

Just to clarify your executing the fnv4gb.exe right?

A friend of mind and I were on the phone for an hour working on solutions. His game WAS working fine from the get go until I asked him to verify the files. It told him the same thing, "1 files could not be..." He It didn't work. So then he did the verify one more time and let it sit there for a bit. It downloaded a file. He started the client and it worked. He closed the game and tried to start it again. It encountered an error, the one we have. She he verified it again and the game worked fine. He closed it, and restarted it. Same problem. So he decided to try and keep opening it. And, to my surprise, it actually DID run a few times. He finally put it in Windows XP Service Pack 3 compatibility and it works now with no errors yet. HOWEVER, it doesn't work for me. Nothing does. At all. I did fresh installs of everything, I even made a new steam account for good measure lol. But nothing, not even from running in XP mode, to trying to install it to Program Files non x86 worked. In fact, you CAN'T install it to non x86 program files. When you install the game, it installs to steam's program file, which is located in x86. When you try to install it to normal program files, it DOESN'T install there, instead without letting you know it automatically installs to x86, so that idea is out of the question.

My PC isn't the best, but it's good, it's new, and it's in good running condition. I run all the games I have right now, EVEN Fallout 3 and I don't get problems like this. This is ridiculous. Even worse since you can't bring computer games back.

Yes. It doesn't work at all.

Do you have any overclocking software installed like asus gamer osd? These have been known to cause problems. From your dxdaig you seem to have alot of background stuff loaded.
Third party apps can cause all sorts of issues. Issues that persist even with a clean boot. Also what anti-virus do you have?

I don't overclock, so no. The only background stuff I have running is the normal windows stuff. I don't know anything that I have that would be running without my starting it. And I use AVG. I've already done the whole allowing stuff through and all. This problem really makes no sense. I have nearly the same computer as my pal but his works...

Ok what does the event viewer say. What error information does it give? Start menu -> bottom textbox type event viewer. Look under windows logs -> application. Look for red x's.

This is false logic. But never mind.

That unverified file on Steam has been going on since the dawn of time. I can't remember what it's for, but it has nothing to do with fallout...some kind of Steam process thingie. It'll constantly say it's downloading & unverified etc. I couldn't tell you why it doesn't verify, but it's never affected my game to my knowledge. Just ignore it.

Since you have an nvida card, you could try going into its settings. Under Manage 3D settings, pick the Program Settings tab. Find or add falloutnv.exe and under Power management mode pick Prefer Maximum performance. Can't say whether it would fix this particular crash-spot, but it can help with frequent CoTD's for some people.

Certain video/audio filters have also been known to cause issues...if you can, disable any that might be running when the game launches so they don't run with NV.

I had a problem with NV crashing on the launcher, error was that GameOverlayRenderer.dll stopped working. Solved it by:
Deleting all Steam files on Harddrive manually except for Steam.exe, and Steamapps folder. Then restarted computer and ran Steam.exe from its location on the harddrive, not a shortcut, and let it update.
BTW, this does NOT delete your games when you do this, those are stored in the Steamapps folder, thus why you keep it. It will get rid of your auto log in tho, so make sure your remember your login and password.

How exactly is it false logic? I never had problems in a PC game like this. The only other game that ran bad to my knowledge was S.T.A.L.K.E.R. And now it runs great because of patching. At at least I could play it. This game doesn't give me a chance to get to anything.

And I've already done all that.

Because, except in cases where all programs are having issues (such as with an over-heating issue) it's irrelevant. Just because my PC runs 5 different word processing programs with no problem doesn't mean all word processing programs/the 6th one will/should. That may not have been what you meant, & if not, sorry...I've been running on little sleep for 2 months so I'm a little more snap-first think-later than usual. My fault. :)

It does sound like perhaps it's maybe a problem with the NV Steam launcher, of which I have no expertise with. I've seen people post with launcher issues before, but I don't remember solutions, if there were any.

It's unlikely to help, but since you're running Win764 (same as me) I'll mention that I installed Steam in a Games directory that I created. That is, I didn't put it in either Program Files directory. I do this with all games after having some issues with Win7's permission/pre-fetch/authorization stuff. Sometimes (I don't know the specifics of why) installing outside of the Program Files directories seems to bypass some of those things/errors.

Well, I meant all the games I have myself. I've never had a problem with them like this.

It's a compatibility issue with graphics cards and DirectX versions. I downloaded the dxd9.dll file and put it in my directory for the game. I can play it now, but it reads my card as a 7900 GS lol. Everything is going fine since I put that in and since it's just a DX9 file, I assume is a graphics card/DX version problem. Something in the new patch must've triggered it.

Eh, true. I thought of doing that, but it was the other night and I had work in the morning. Told myself I'd do it the next day and completely forgot about it, but now that it's working I don't need to do anything to it now. Some people are having the opposite effect from the .dll and with the new patch. The new patch ruined some people's games, and for others fixed it to the point they don't need the dxd9.dll.

lol, really, the .dll file fixed it? I used that a long time ago to help with nvidia specific stutter but haven't needed it in a while. I remember that patch 1.1 made it so some people didn't need the dll fix anymore, but I still did...it wasn't until patch 1.2 that I could get rid of it. Glad it worked for you so you can play!

The patches have definitely been strange that way tho. Like the hand-loader gun 'freeze' bug. I didn't have it originally at all, then they fixed it in one patch and I suddenly had it. They fixed it again later and it went half-away for me. Stuff like that. Computers....nutty things. :)
