Fallout: New Vegas Reviews Thread

The Joystiq review is the most popular one on the buzz feed right now. I'm going to go eat and try to find more reviews.

I'm actually heartened by these reviews. Most of the negatives have to do with bugs and a lack of huge improvements in the game engine. We knew the engine wasn't changing a whole lot, so that gets a big ol' "who cares" from me. For bugs to be the major complaint and for it to still be getting 8's and 9's out of 10, to me, is encouraging. Bugs can be fixed. Sounds like it's going to be an excellent game. If it had no bugs and wasn't a follow-up to another game I'll bet we'd be seeing 9's and 10's. Still, though, 7-9/10 is an excellent score for a follow-up RPG.

*looks at package tracking*

C'mon, dammit!

I wonder how big contrast there will be (if at any) between European and US reviews. With Alpha Protocol it was huge - so big that someone actually ended up making a pretty comprehensive blogpost about differences between the viewpoints and priorities in reviewing a game.

Well, read the Game Informer review, which makes me a bit sad.

I dunno, guess I'll see when the game launches in...dont.look.at.clock...

Don't get me started. I was actually embarrassed at how shallow and unprofessional the U.S. reviews for that game were.

I think I'll stop for today, gotta study for the rest of the night. Hopefully there's plenty to read through for you Eastern Hemisphere folks. Like I said in the original post if moderators could help or take over, it would be greatly appreciated.

I remember facepalming quite fiendishly. Good times....

Maybe they have learned their lesson this time around.

You still have an hour and a half till it unlocks, but better than waiting till 10:00AM PST :(

Indeed, and with the speed at which my download is going, I'll be about an hour late to the "party." Nothing like showing up fashionable late, though. :disguise:

I'm sorry about how you have to wait until tomorrow morning, but look at it this way. If you have nothing else planned (like work or school), then you'll be able to wake up fully recharged and ready to spend your day in New Vegas. :vaultboy:

If you have school or work, however, what better way is there to unwind after a hectic day than sitting back enjoying the beautiful scenery of New Vegas, gambling in one of the many fine casinos, or blowing a few limbs off of some pesky NPCs that dare challenge your might? :tops:

I, on the other hand, will be able to play it earlier, but I'll be on the verge of falling asleep because I'll be starting so late. Therefore, I imagine I'll only probably get an hour in before I just collapse. :dead:

It's funny that even those with a higher score tend to mention that it could be just a huge expansion. If it were like that, I wouldn't give it a high rating. But I'm no journo, just a lowly translatoresse without any rights to judge those experienced people. ^_^

It's unfair to punish New Vegas harshly for using the same engine when sports titles or multiplayer shooters have minimal improvements and get 9.x scores.

Who said anything about game breaking bugs? Chill out. Video game "journalism" is filled with amateur, hack writers without a shred of credibility and a severe lack of ethics. Get a general impression of the game but don't hold some fat nerd's words as gospel. Christ, I expect more from Fallout fans. Remember, these same choads gave every Halo game a 90+ score. A game that basically hasn't changed in the past 10 years or however long.

Oh, what's that you say? All of these reviews are for the 360 version? The most unreliable piece of hardware in the history of video games.? Pfft...........hahahaha.

Just wanted to pop in one more time before I went to bed. Apparently the Joystiq reviewer didn't even bother to try hardcoe mode and just pass the game off as a direct duplicate of Fallout 3 after only playing 28 hrs into it.

AtomicGamer has done a comparison paragraph between the three versions in its review. Aside from that haven't seen any, but I haven't looked too much into them for now.

Nope. I'm sure they totally didn't test it at all. :P

Not yet. Looking forward to hearing something from Dan Stapleton, though.

I read that one too - it also mentioned *a lot* of bugs. But it did end saying that the overall experience was worth all the imperfections, so swings and roundabouts  I think the whole "duplicate" thing came from the lack of progression concerning graphics, NPC animation etc. But that didn't bother me in FO:3 so I doubt it will in FO:NV.

Pretty good reviews so far. Although, the news of it being a technical mess is most bothersome.

This and it's got me quite nervous as a console gamer. PC users can have all the bugs and glitches ironed out by the modding community while the other platforms must wait for patches. I really want to play the game but all of these bugs is really got me considering waiting a year for the GOTY.

I regularly disagree with several aspects of a given review; I'm not too worried. On the other hand I also find the kind of dreck some reviewers often worship totally unplayable.

The PC version of New Vegas is, from a technical standpoint, the best one you can get and it even costs $10 less, but it's got its fair share of problems as well. It's got built-in mod support, higher-resolution textures and better visuals (on a well-enough equipped PC - the system requirements haven't changed much since Fallout 3) and precise mouse-and-keyboard controls that free you up from leaning on the auto-aim found in VATS. It's also got most of the issues and crash bugs that the console versions do, but at least on the PC you have a quicksave key to make saving your progress at any time pretty much instant.
