Fallout won't start after new patch

Post » Tue May 10, 2011 1:39 pm

After Steam automatically updated me to the new patch, fallout will not start for me. I've turned off all of my mods, but still no starting up. Next step is a clean install, I suppose, which is really frustrating so I'm hoping someone has a better solution for me (And yes, unfortunately, "Get a better PC isn't an option atm :) ). Game was running nicely beforehand.

You guys using mods at all? Ever edit the .ini file? Try deleting the two .ini files in the documents>mygames>falloutnv folder

Tried removing the ini files but that didn't work. I've turned off my mods and removed them from the directory. Still nothing.

Also, try right-clicking on the game on the Steam library, going to properties, and selecting local files, then click on 'Verify integrity of game cache'

Since steam is such a wonderful service the game auto updates. Now i can't play the game anymore despite the fact that it was working flawlessly BEFORE the patch. So what did they screw up?

I had the same problem, but have now fixed it for myself. Here's what I did:

I had Steam validate the game files. It told me that it fixed 2 files. After that the game worked fine. I noticed one of those files replaced was the fallout_default.ini. I had been using ArchiveInvalidationInvalidated!.bsa to load in loose files. It had to be logged in the fallout_default.ini. When I put it back in, crash. Take it out, runs.

Maybe this will help someone else.

Verifying Integrity found 1 file to redownload.

After that this error went away for me.

Edit: just checked restoring my fallout_default.ini also caused crash to return. I also use archiveInvalidated!.bsa. i left the entry in the ini file and deleted the .bsa file from Data and crash went away.

I was having the same problem, and just got it fixed. Delete the two .ini files under Documents/MyGames/FalloutNV, and also the .ini file under the main Fallout New Vegas folder where the executable is, and then validate your cache integrity. It should redownload the ini files and work.

I also disabled all my mods before I validated my cache; not sure if that'll become a necessity, but it might not be. Now to just fix the ini files back with archiveinvalidation and reenable all my mods...

Yup, same issue here. Instant crash on starting FNV after the update.

Thankfully I had backups of the EXEs. However it's just the 'FalloutNV.exe' that's causing it. Swapped back to the older version and everything is fine again.

Well, as fine as it was, I guess...

Scratch that...just read the above....

Thanks guys looks like default ini was the cause. Getting it to check the game files worked.

Edit: Looks like archiveinvalidation borks the game.

Try re-verifying the files

1) Open Steam
2) Right click on Fallout: New Vegas
3) Hit Properties
4) Click the "Local Files" tab
5) Click on "Verify Integrity of Game Cache"

If that doesn't work, delete your ini files and repeat steps 1-5

Yeah, I think it is archiveinvalidation that does it. Put ArchiveInvalidationInvalidated!.bsa into the archive list and it crashes. Take it out, and it's fine. Poo.

I tried both, taking out the archiveinvalidated and trying to do the local thing and both don't work...I even deleted the ini files which makes my game crash...this is just poopoo

Yeah, I'm having a problem with the whole way this thing happened. Steam snuck in and installed a patch on my that I didn't agree to, borked my game (since I hate the default rules for it) and I'm sure in the end we'll be told its our faults somehow for running mods.

For those of you having issues, did you previously use the d3d9.dll quickfix, and have you tried removing that file from the game dir before launching?
