Falmer Dungeons incredibly atmospheric

Post » Sat Jun 02, 2012 7:16 am

I've only come across two so far, both accidentally:

Spoiler
Shimermist Cave - first experience with them, they were so creepy and terrifying, and the battle right at the end of the cave was incredible. I didn't expect to see a Centurion so early on in the game, was definitely surpirsed!
Darkwater Pass - jumped in here from Ivarstead side thinking it would be a quick shortcut north... instead I get a sprawling, creepy, Falmer hive!

I have to say they are excellently done, and the fact that they are blind is pretty well executed (Muffle + Candlelight + Throw Voice =). Been some of my most exciting experiences in the game so far.

My first run in with them was a bandit cave that was a bar.

I walk into it and they are fighting with bandits. I thought it was cool, they kept scamps in the game.

The Charus are ridiculously strong. The first time I saw one I thought it would be like a slightly stronger skeever, but then I realized it dropped half of my health in one hit...

I hate Dwarven ruins and dungeon in general because of the falmer and their damn robot!

I was just in a Falmer 'hive' tonight and was feeling a bit nervous .... lots of darkness, holes, webs and chaurus......

Got on here and saw this post - agree 100%.

The dungeons as a whole are the best in the whole series - they are all excellent!

For all the noise about a lack of diversity, these dungeons (most especially Blackreach) exemplify ingenuity and creativity.

They are otherworldly, almost an entirely different plane, and I easily take a few minutes in each one to just go, "Damn that's cool."

I wish there was an armor that could be made out of them. I mean, you can use the chitin you collect from them to upgrade Falmer armor, but it's not very strong at all.

The Falmer/dwemer dungeon you have to cruise through with two sneaky friends in tow for the Thieves guild was great. With my character build I'm relatively weak in a heads up fight and that place was chock full of enemies.

Sneaking takes on a different feel with the Falmer, the blindness and increased ability to hear you forces a bit of a strategy change. Wasn't the most beautiful dungeon but the over all experience was really great! Two competent followers and large groups of enemies add up to big fun!

If you like Falmer dungeons don't skip the TG quest line.

There is a falmer dungeon thats a triple layer one to the south-south east of Windhelm and it takes bloody ages to clear. I had to enter it for the mages guild book collection quest. I went in carrying almost nothing and came out loaded to the gunnels with alchemy ingredients, gold and magical gear(450+ carry weight). I never had to go looking for any more of those particular reagents, I had litterally hundreds of them. And on top of that I was forced to drop a ton of gear to make space.

Working my way through it took some time, and it started to get to the stage where I was longing for daylight again. At that point it hit home to me how bloody good the dungeon was crafted. I mean I really did get that "I want out of here" feeling coupled with a touch of claustrophobia, but not from boredom or fear but from the shear scale of the dungeon complex and the tension of trying to clear it and not miss anything.

OH that's what the chitin is for! LOL I never collected Falmer gear and was wondering why the Chaurus would drop chitin. I thought once I get my smithing to 100 I could make some cool Morrowind chitin armor, but no such luck LOL

But yea, I love the Dwemer ruins and that cave the OP mentions is very cool indeed!

Yup, Chaurus are a major pain in the butt! Mix or buy some resist poison potions!!!

Well. the Falmer armor isn't in the Falmer's inventory. I found it laying out on a table in a Falmer ruin, but I can't remember where.

Too bad that the nords doesnt seem to talk about them. I think that if you interact with an old adventurer, he/should tell old horrible stories about the falmer and their lairs. That way they would have a mystery behind them,

Yeah, I get those same feelings from some of the dungeons, especially the ones that seem to just keep going deeper and deeper with no sign of ending, and I'm slowwwwwly taking my time through them trying not to miss a thing. It can just get to the point where I feel like "get me the hell out of here already", and it's great when you finally reach the end and step out into the daylight again. It's like such a relief. And usually after those I take my time and do some non combat stuff to keep myself from getting into another arduous dungeon crawl too soon.

I agree. A lot of dungeons I just need to slow down and strategize for the final battle. In the Falmer/ Dwemer ruins I need to plan every room to stay alive.

I dislike the dwemer ruins. Everything is one color. Blah...

Most other dungeons to me, though, are incredible.

Can't believe some people think dungeons are drab.

...wut?

I found the dwemer ruins to be the most colorful, especially when there were also Falmer (and their associated color pallette) inside.. Certainly more colorful than the nordic ruins.

And you certainly can't get more vivid than Blackreach...

The first time I went through THE dwemer ruin that you HAVE to visit for the MQ (Alfand or something like that), at first it seemed like just a regular dungeon crawl, but then, the deeper I got the creepier it got, with the ambiance progressively changing from frozen dwarven ruin, to full-fledged dwarven city, to falmer lair.
That dungeon took me about 3 hours to clear (I really took my time though).

I'll let you guess just how good it felt to be out of there afterwards.

But that was honestly one of the best dungeon crawls of the game for me
